It may be disorganized, but there are gems to be found here.. The prices are great and the people are very friendly.It is like a small treasure hunt.. There are rooms off rooms.. and within these are a great variety of finds. Do not let the appearances deceive you.. this is a wonderful store. I can't believe all the "boutique thrift store" whiners here! I go to thrift stores for cheap stuff, not "vintage" or "classic" or "antique" over-priced stuff, suggested by knowledgeable and attractive staff, with Masters of Art History degrees. It may be a bit on the dingy side, but the thing I love about Good Neighbours Thrift Store is that the deals get better, the further back into the store that you dare to venture! The "furniture room" waaaay in the dark, scary back of the store has the best deals! When my wife left me, taking all the kitchen ware with her, I groped around in kitschy thrift stores and found zilch that didn't LOOK LIKE it came out of a thrift store, with mis-matched (but "vintage") plates and silverware. An hour in the Good Neighbours Thrift Store and I had a MATCHING table service for eight, MATCHING silverware service for eight, and a serviceable set of pots and pans, all for under $50! So please keep posting the negative reviews of "scary" stores and "garbage dumps." That will just make the prices better for the rest of us. read more

People dump on Good Neighbours, and I understand why -- yes, it's messy, there are no prices on anything, there isn't a lot of staff, etc. But I think the people who complain about these things fail to realize the role that GN plays in this community. This is where a lot of disadvantaged people shop, and it serves those people well because it is close to where a those people live, there is lots of decent stuff for really cheap prices, and staff understand the clientele and treat them like normal people. If GN had more staff and was cleaner and marked all their items with prices, everything would have to cost a lot more and then disadvantaged people wouldn't be able to afford the stuff. So hey, too bad if you're looking for a nicer thrift store but there are plenty of those around, and this one is appreciated by a lot of people in the community for being exactly what it is and fulfilling a need that doesn't get a lot of coverage or appreciation. Now that that's out of the way: I'm not disadvantaged, and this is still my fave thrift store, hands down. Yes it's messy but it's way better than it used to be, and I don't mind digging a bit anyway. Yes, no prices are marked on anything but I can only think of one time something was more than i wanted to spend on it. Every other time, I'm so shocked at how low the prices are that I feel bad paying so little. And while there isn't a lot of staff around, I've found most of the staff who are there to be really helpful and kind. In short, I'm a big fan of Good Neighbours. You just have to know what to expect from it and/or appreciate the role it plays in the community. read more

I just came from there and got a beautiful floor lamp for cheap and it all works! The price was on it and a kind man helped me plug in all lamps and found bulbs to try in some of them. The store is huge with many different areas so might look sloppy but it is 100x better since new owners have taken it over. read more

The farther you enter, the scarier it gets. When you first enter, it seems nicely organized and appealing but as you go further in, it gets junkier, darker and dingier. Nothing is priced. You just take it up to the cashier and she tells you how much it is. This leaves too much wiggle room for me as the price can vary from person to person. I will not be back. read more

Where do I begin with this place......at first it was "interesting" as the first wave was glassware and such. There was big windows letting the light enter. I felt safe knowing where the exit was and that a world existed on the other side of the doorway. Then I proceeded to the "hardware" section and things began to get disturbing. Like I was being followed or profiled. The mess....the chaos.....the people. Calling that merchandise garbage is an insult to actual garbage. Then 2 local drunks entered as they were on fist name basis with the staff. I was saddened, yet agitated. Rip the bandaid off and leave. Has the appeal of watching a bum fight DVD. But no there was an entire back section to explore. The toys, the electronics, household goods...... Finally your journey ends in a back room that smelt like musty wet dog and bad food. The clothing. It was like there was a flood and all the clothing was dried out and and racked after 3 months. Safety 0/10.....cleanliness -23/10......recommend to friend? Would not recommend this to place to Bill Cosby to serve out his life sentence and that would be to severe a punishment to fit his crimes. Stay away.........far far far far far far far away ! How nobody has "called it in" and reported the filth is beyond the comprehension of my brain. read more

This is one of my favourite local thrift stores without a doubt. If you look past the overall aesthetic of the place, the smell, and how things are organized, it's a blessing of a store. Most of the cashiers are very nice, and some of my best finds there consist of Versace, Burberry, and more. Probably going there again tomorrow. read more

Holy crap! This is quite possibly the scariest thrift store I've ever visited. Imagine a thrift store run and organized by the subjects of the TV series "Hoarders" and you may have some idea of what this place is like. That is, if you can figure out how to enter the premises in the first place. Nothing is priced, the merchandise is just displayed in piles, staff is next to impossible to find and identify, and the video rental store attached to it is a bizarre, surrealistic touch. And it just seems to keep going forever, with new nooks and crannies to discover. If there's a thrift store you currently have a hate on, I urge you to visit this place. I'm sure the place that irks you will seem ten times better in comparison after you spend some time with your Good Neighbours... read more

Possibly the most disgusting thrift store i've ever been in & as an avid thrifter I have been to my fair share. While the place is huge the inventory is lacking. Most of the stuff looks like it was thrown away because it wasn't even worth donating. If you went dumpster diving & piled all the junk you found haphazardly in a (freezing) warehouse you'd have Good Neighbours. Then there's the pricing. Most places if they don't want to price each item individually will have a set price posted clearly for each particular group of items. ie. all pants $5.99, hats $5, etc. Good Neighbours prices things in a range ie. shoes $5-$20 depending on quality, etc. So you don't have any idea what you are paying for an item until you bring it up to the cashier & they somehow decide what that item will cost that day. I didn't buy anything but my guess is that most things will end up being on the high end of their scale. There's no rhyme or reason to the organization either (at least as far as clothing is concerned) On one rack I found shorts, snow pants, bras, bathing suits, kids jackets & a purse. Unless you have hours to dig through rack upon rack of random items don't waste your time visiting. There are other great stores (Sassy Lion, the Cowichan Family Life & Hospital Auxiliaries) in Duncan to shop at there's no need to bother with Good Neighbours read more

i LIKE Good Neighbors.... yeah, it's not as organized as some other shops, but it's not as expensive either. Time and time again, i have filled up the counter space with a variety of stuff and had the staff just give me one price for the whole lot!... and CHEAP!.. VERY cheap!... i would rather not pay for staff service that i am not using... i like to prowl around and look for treasures that i can actually afford. It's not open late enough though... by the time i can book a truck to pick up my stuff, the store is closed. Otherwise i would be taking stuff away by the truckload, guys! read more

Gonzo misses the point - this is a perfect junk shop as junk shops used to be; an ideal hunting ground for finding a treasure. The stuff isn't priced - you can negotiate - a plus! He couldn't find out how to get in - try the front door marked "open" under the sign which says "Good Neighbours Thrift" - not too difficult. The "staff" is the owner who runs it by himself 8 hours a day 7 days a week. What did Gonzo want - a neat "boutique" shop with fussy old ladies, everything tidily shelved and everything of any possible value vetted by some goddamned fuddy duddy before it gets even close to a shelf. Boring! Yes, it seems to keep going forever with new nooks and crannies to discover - er - isn't that a good thing too? Actually I'm really glad you don't like the place Gonzo - there'll be more for me to find if you go somewhere else. read more
