Captain Mike's wife could not be nicer as she answered all of my questions before we made our reservation.

Skip Madeline Island if your schedule is tight. Highlights: Sea Caves - my favorites were the northeastern edge of Sand Island (next to Justice Bay). They are so breathtakingly beautiful, especially in sunrise or sunset lighting. Since we took our boat, we were able to get up close to see all the spectacular details. If you don't have a boat, rent kayaks and a tour guide to get up close views. Grand Tour - we drove to Bayfield to ride a large catamaran boat for a 3 hour tour of the Apostle Islands. Visitor Centers - they were full of interesting info and has some fun merch for souvenirs. Many people rave about their experience visiting Madeline Island (the largest island) which isn't actually a part of the National Lakeshore, but we found it rather outdated and boring and left on the very next ferry.

The Little Sand Lake visitor center we could have actually spent more time if we'd had the luxury but we had an appointment to keep. I could see spending about an hour there. I recommend visiting both centers and taking a ferry/tour of the islands. If you want to do it all give yourself 3+ days. Otherwise you could probably hit the highlights in 1.5 days.

Karen at Adventure Tours was a total rockstar in helping me get a tour booked. I came a bit early in the season and with my dog, so getting a date and a group willing to travel with a dog was a bit challenging. Karen was constantly communicating with me while I was up there trying to find a group for me to go out on the boat with. And she did! We'd been chatting back and forth while she was checking the best date for the weather, and we were able to have a wonderful tour! Captain Lauren was likewise a rockstar and our all-lady tour (except for my male pup) was a total blast. I love that this tour was in a smaller speedboat and there were only four of us plus dog plus Captain Lauren. We got to chat and mention things we might want to know and see, and Lauren was a trove of information and fun facts. We also were able to get closer to some of the cooler islands and rock formations than the huge commerical tour boats we saw further out in the water. We got to naviate inside some of the sea caves and look out at the big boats who couldn't fit or get this close. This was 100% the way to go for a water tour. I cannot recommend this option enough, and extra love for being dog friendly.

We hung on watching the weather for the next day and also hoped more people would sign up for the tour to meet the four person minimum. Sunday morning, it was very foggy so we waited until finally we took off on the four hour boat tour (no kayaking). Pete, our captain, was friendly and knowledgeable about the islands and made every effort to accommodate what his passengers wanted, especially my desire to take LOTS of photos! Although we never felt unsafe, he did give us pause sharing that the boat we were on was new to him and that he thought it didn't have sufficient horsepower. We did enjoy the tour and saw lots of great stuff: shipwrecks, lighthouses, bald eagles, a historic fish camp and, my favorite, sea caves on Devil's Island. Our communication with the office, especially Karen and Monique, was pleasant and we hope to kayak with them in the future.

Let me start by saying the staff are great. Obviously very passionate about their work and the…read moresurrounding ecology. Bonus: whoever makes the food is excellent too. My only complaint is the actual weather+refund policy: It was a bit windy that day and there were some waves (we were still out on lake Michigan though). The guides deemed the water too choppy to enter the caves. That's fine, I understand they need to protect us, and they know much more about than I do. But if we don't even get to enter the caves? That's a deal-breaker, and the customers should get some money back. My group paid 500 total (100 each) to enter the caverns. The day trip is called "Sea Caves". If I wanted to go kayaking in just any old lake I don't think I should have to pay $100 to do it. It was just a disappointing experience and I don't think the cost of the weather should be passed on to the customer. Note: They do warn the customer of this before purchase but it doesn't make the policy any less inane. TL;DR - Staff 10/10. Weather interruption policy 1/10

Here is my google review. This is the same company…read more Would not recommend. Beware! They are NOT an approved kayaking company by the National Park Service. They rented my son tandem kayaks to go to the Apostle Islands. They gave him a broken radio, no bilge pump and no cockpit cover. They ended up refunding him after he told them that the National Park Service and L5 Kayak expert they ran into told them that this company was putting them at risk for injury or even death. They refused to allow me to talk to the owner. They are comfortable renting broken equipment, allowing you to kayak in a tandem without a cockpit cover so that it fills with water and then not supplying the required bilge pump to get the water out. Go on the National Park Service web page and find a kayak group that meets standards- stay away from this company as it could put your life at risk. The company responded to my google review with this lie "We provided your son and his friend with a detailed two-hour safety course before their rental, clearly demonstrating how to safely use a tandem kayak as intende, with two people paddling together. Despite this, they made the unsafe decision to paddle solo from the back seat and load gear (including beer) into the front cockpit -- a configuration we specifically warn against and prohibit in our waiver. Even though they knowingly violated the rules and misused the equipment, we still issued a full refund as a courtesy. We did this not because we were at fault, but because we recognize that Lake Superior is unforgiving, and we want all our guests to stay safe, even when they make poor choices. We sincerely hope future renters follow our safety training and use the equipment as instructed. We are always here to help, but we cannot prevent incidents when guests ignore the guidance they are given" This is a lie. My son and his friend rented 2 single kayaks. The company gave them 2 tandems. The ranger and another L5 kayak expert saw them before they launched and recommended they not go because they were rented improper equipment. They never even loaded them. What beer?! They are lying to make the reader think they are safe. Please call the Bayfield National park service yourself and talk to the rangers there. They are very familiar with this unsafe and deceptive company. Don't rely on social media. Talk to the experts yourself. You can email or call the park service and they will advise you.
