I'll admit it, I didn't go to school here. WAIT!!! Before you decide this is a useless, flaggable review, I did, however, watch the Spokane fireworks from the hill near their soccer field. It's the perfect view point for the display. It took about three minutes to get back on I-90, as opposed to down near Riverfront Park, where you'll be sitting waiting to leave for about 30-45 minutes due to the number of people parking in the area. Plus one star for Martin Stadium, where the Bulldogs play. Walking past, they have a list of thing not allowed inside. The final one caught everyone in my family's attention: NO throwable items. Which lead us to wonder: How do they enforce that? Isn't just about everything that's a thing throwable? GO ZAGS!!

A beautiful winter's day on campus!

An exemplary institution of higher education! There's a reason why this school continues to thrive, and that's because of the energy among the students and the dedication from faculty and staff. The support systems here (for all!) are quite unrivaled. Student grapple with big questions and strive to make a difference in the world! Aside from the basketball team, there's a lot more that makes us distinct. We've sent the most graduates to Peace Corp for a school of our size for the past 4 years. Our student athletes graduate at a higher rate than Columbia. Our alumni dedication is nationally ranked. And that's just the tip of the iceberg!

Large campus split in half by centennial trail. Beautiful campus too. You walk passed it if you head out onto the Centennial Trail, so you might as well stop off and walk around the campus. It was early so there weren't many people around. Some lawn maintenance was being done. How lucky to have such a great location for school right along the river.

In…read moremaking this change, I enrolled in the online Master of Professional Accounting program at EWU, which I just completed a couple of months ago. While the EWU campus is in Cheney, the Schools of Business & Accounting operate out of the Catalyst Building in Spokane, which is why I am reviewing the program in this listing. Upon acceptance to this program, an evaluation will be made to determine if you need to complete any prerequisites before starting the regular program. Since my major was not in Accounting, I ended up having to do 5 courses, which equated to about a half year as courses are 6 weeks long and there are two sessions each quarter. In total, it took a little over 2 years to complete all program requirements. There are no set times for each class, so courses are structured for you to go at your own pace and when you have time to complete the coursework. Classes typically had a discussion post due mid-week and homework was due on Sunday. There were also quizzes, exams and final projects for many of the classes that I took. If you can take one more class per session, you will graduate more quickly. However, I would not advise this if you are currently working, as the course load may be too much. Most of the professors are working in other positions during the day and some do not reside in Washington. There seems to be minimal staff at the university, aside from a student advisor. I thought the pace of the classes was manageable for a student new to this field and for someone already working in the field. Though I felt the coursework was primarily theoretical and more geared towards learning the content to pass the CPA exam. I would have liked to have received more of a practical education, where I applied the concepts as they are used in the workplace. The university is in the process of becoming a polytechnic university focused on hands-on learning, which hopefully will address this issue. From a career support perspective, I did not feel the university had sufficient resources. Career services are more geared towards on-campus students, than those online. You can book 1:1 meetings with the staff if you do need help though. I would like to see EWU work with the business community to find internships for their students. Currently, students are responsible for finding their own internships. I do understand EWU is meant to serve the Spokane area community. It would be difficult to find internships for students in other locations, like many of my fellow students were. But I would have considered moving to Spokane for a few months if I knew that I could complete an internship through the university. Overall, I thought the online MPA program was okay. I do think it is better for someone already in the field working and just looking to get the credits needed to take the CPA exam. But for someone needing more support and new to the field of study, I think additional resources are needed to improve the student experience.

It's humorous looking at some of the complaints here. From what I can see, a vast majority of the complaints stated are entirely self-inflicted drama. First of all, if you're upset that your classes are not transferring to the University of your choice, that's your fault. It is entirely the student's responsibility to look at available online transfer tools OR make the necessary calls to your chosen college to find out if you are taking the right classes. Yes, that can sometimes take many hours of research. Do it. Spokane's staff can only go so far in holding your hand here. There is always an advisor who will help you determine whether you are taking the right "core/bacherlorette" requirements that will fulfill the core part of your bachelor's degree for your chosen four year institution. If you havn't done the necessary research here, that falls on your side of the ballpark. They shouldn't have to hold your hand through the whole process. I also noticed a lot of complaints about cheating students, terrible professors, and so on. Again, blame your generation's lack of ethics/morals (not the professors). The professors here are wonderful, and I simply can't agree. There's a reason people go to community colleges, let's just say that. It's disgusting that so many people would come on here blaming professors for young people's behavior and lack of research skills. Take some personal responsibility. As for my experience with Spokane: I am an Oregon resident and am a returning student who needed to pick up a few credits before transferring to Oregon State University. One of the reasons I chose Spokane is because I have never come across such a professional staff. This college beats the heck out of competing community colleges that are sloppy and have terrible programs. Their professors are as good as any four year institution and the faculty is incredible; in particular Sami and Karen who are INCREDIBLE guides/counselors that have been my saving grace in understanding what all I was going to need to get myself into a position to transfer to Oregon State University. When I had questions about quarter/semester conversions, requirements, financial aid (FAFSA), etc. they went above and beyond to make sure everything was on track. If it hadn't of been for them, I may have thrown in the towel. I have also been immensely impressed with the professors as I've also taken classes from a college in Kansas City, Missouri some years ago. In comparison, it's definitely on par if not better quality classes. All the professors have impressive backgrounds/resumes and hold their classes to high standards. Thanks Spokane for all your professionalism and fantastic staff!

Back then, this college did a great job of offering enough classes to fulfill the general university requirements, so I could move on down the road to a public university. I particularly recall beginning and advanced volleyball, tennis, and bowling. Oh, and that psychology class also sticks in my head. On my most recent trip to SCC, I went to find my mom (it was Mother's Day weekend), and she was peddling her wares, lilacs at the Garden Expo. I also found my dad planted in a chair, helping the garden club. I had a chance to go down memory lane in the Lair, as I really wanted to find the bowling alley, but things have changed or rather there was too much garden expo in my way or my memory is really slipping. I don't know what classes SCC offers now, but I'd be willing to guess that it is still a great value, and if I had it all to do over again, I'd still come here first and get those required classes out of the way. My economics classes also paid off.
