Cancun's "Zona Hotelera" is definitely the "Las Vegas Strip" of Mexico: walking through the maze of multi-colored high-rise resorts, glitzy restaurants and nightclubs, stands selling all sorts of tours and experiences, and throngs of wild tourists, you can't help but draw parallels (ok, so maybe besides the gambling). And, just like Las Vegas, Cancun is EXPENSIVE. Maybe not quite Las Vegas expensive, but compared to the rest of Mexico, this place is a total rip-off. Fortunately, you can still find some good values without going all the way into town, and this little convenience store is surely one of them.
To begin with, the empanadas at GoMart are some of the best I've had outside of Argentina. Not only are they perfectly moist and seasoned (unlike the empanadas at many of the other supermercados and convenience stores in the area, which are super dry and not very tasty), but they also come with all-you-can-eat helpings of chimichurri sauce that is, again, one of the better garnishes I have had outside of Argentina.
There is also a very large selection of cold beer (way cheeper than even the happiest of happy hours at the local hotels), including some locally made craft beer. And, for a gas station, they also have some pretty good coffee.
To top it off, the prices for everything are reasonable, and definitely way better than at any of the resorts. You can easily get a couple empanadas, a beer, and some water for well under M$75 pesos (less than $4 USD). Be aware, they do only take pesos (but also do take some cards), but there is an ATM right in the store (and we all know that, to get the best value anywhere, you should always pay in the local currency!) read more
