A Fun Event Worth Attending, But Come Prepared
The Cognizant…read moreClassic (formerly the Honda Classic) is a genuinely fun PGA Tour event and overall very well organized. Getting in and out was a breeze. Drop off, pickup, resident shuttles, parking, entry, exit, and ride share all ran smoothly. No complaints there at all.
That said, the signage inside the course leaves a lot to be desired. There was essentially one map on the grounds, it was not particularly clear, and the staff member stationed there was actually giving out incorrect directions. We walked well past hole 15 trying to find hole 15.
Not ideal. Better wayfinding throughout the course would make a big difference for first timers.
Speaking of first timers, there is virtually nothing online to help a newcomer prepare for their day. No guidance on where to position yourself without a grandstand ticket, no tips on the best free viewing spots, nothing. We eventually discovered that hole 15 had a free grandstand/bar tent, which was a fantastic spot to set up camp, but only after walking the entire course to figure that out. That kind of information should be easy to find before you even leave home.
Shade and seating were also in very short supply on what was a very hot day. More tent or shaded areas scattered throughout would go a long way.
Speaking of which, who knew you could bring your own chairs??!! Spoiler alert, you could...
Drinks ran $16 for a can of water and $14 for a beer, which I expected going in so no real surprise there. Just know what you are signing up for.
Despite the gripes, I would absolutely go back. I would just arrive earlier, head straight to hole 15, pack some patience, and bring sunscreen. Now that I know the lay of the land, it will be a much smoother experience.
