Déjà vu. As we drove…read moreup to the Château, something tugged at my memory about this place. It was familiar...but from where? A contact I had in Normandy made a reservation for me here, knowing my interest in local cuisine and ingredients. Sitting in the main dining room with an exquisite view of the French (English, to some) Channel and watching the tides' tremendous retreat, it struck me. Anthony Bourdain had been a guest of Chef Olivier Roellinger in his Brittany episode...which may explain why, at 2 tables, people were taking pictures of every dish. Gastro-tourism at its finest. What was nice about having seen the show was knowing the backstory. The attention to detail, the emphasis on local ingredients, the gardens, the locally sourced meats and fish. Even the simple country bread was memorable. We enjoyed a decadent (prix fixe) lunch, consisting of an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. The selections were seafood focused, with local Cancale Oysters as a highlight (you can see the chateaux from the oyster houses on the coastline), and various fish and shellfish. I enjoyed the "Mont St. Michel" lamb, as well. World class, exquisite fare that was fresh beyond belief...although classic French, the modern influences, even some Asian in a little lagniappe that we had at the start of the meal. (Yes, I know lagniappe is Cajun not Continental French, but although you can take the girl out of Louisiana...) We could not pass up the cheese cart (insert between entree and dessert). It's a required gastronomic experience when visiting northern France...Normandy and Bretagne cheeses are the best in the world, in my opinion...though my Norman travelling companion had a strong opinion on #1 in that constest. The dessert cart was a superlative experience...one could make a feast of that alone. I went for a mere four little tastes including a delicious pistachio confection and (for me) the obligatory chocolate treat. The wine list was pretty phenomenal, as I would expect, and we enjoyed a bottle of Chassagne Montrachet, a noteworthy wine to accompany an unforgettable experience. Indeed. I won't forget this one.

Superbe, from start to finish once again…read more I will say, there was a dead mouse on the steps right as the gravel pathway ended, and I would have thought such a sight, a firm deterrent for an imminent eating experience- not so. Turns out the cat had just hunted it to death, it happened outside the castle/nowhere near the kitchen, and the staff was just about to inter the poor creature. A dramatic beginning but knowing what to expect from Chef Roellinger I was running to the food rather than away from the dead mouse. We began with aperos and amuses bouches: champagne with spice (unknown) and citron vert and cidre, rum and ginger; the amuses bouches were beef, foie gras, and fish. I forget the accompanying cream/sauces. Initially the server brought fruits de mer but I'm allergic to shellfish so all forfeited for what the pictures show. The entree was a dorade, cru, served with cheese of all things- I forget which-but they were delicately sliced like a fleur and crowned the presentation with leaves and algae. Hubby had the foie gras served with leaves and algae. The main was a small sol (him) and a St Pierre (me). The latter was served with a retour to inde curry sauce and the former with I think a beurre blanc? The sol was served with delectable mashed potatoes and the St Pierre is on a bed of steamed chou and a sauce of potiron (squash) and coing (quince). The deserts were that carriage of everything your eye sees you may have typical of the Chateau- we forfeited the cheese experience. From profiteroles to the fruit verrines- all delightful and palate pleasing. I didn't like the Noël cake but hubs devoured it. We retired to the salon to finish our pouilly fume and had the lightest of lovely biscuits (in the English not Kentucky sense), passion fruit coconut something, chocolate dusted marshmallows and meringues. First time visiting in winter and the tide and sea were postcard beautiful with wintry charm. I so look forward to my next time. Chapeau.

So you're touring the amazement that is Mont. St. Michel - a once in a lifetime experience for…read moremany! And a whole lotta calorie burning for most as you climb your way up to the Abby. So, how does one cap off this experience? With an amazing lunch, that's how! To clarify, your options are a bit limited, let's not forget this, but still, this place has it all! Good service, awesome ambiance, and bitchin' food! All three of us in our party were thoroughly satisfied! I had an individual pizza that was fantastic! My wife had oysters and some other fish dish and she loved it. My daughter had spaghetti and judging by the empty plate? She definitely loved hers too. It was great, really! Do yourself a solid and give 'em a go if you have the opportunity. Cheers!

Because the location is SO cool (and you don't have to cart your luggage nearly as far up the hill…read moreas other hotels on the rock)! You can also easily access the ramparts (more direct access to Mont St Michel less crowds) through the back door with your key card. And the staff are all so friendly, kind, and accommodating. :-) Restaurant buffet breakfast is GREAT! And you will not need to eat lunch - trust me! For their dinner restaurant, please take my advice and spring for the more expensive prix fix meal - it's SO worth it! One night I had the cheaper option but - kinda meh. :-( But the 2nd night I had lobster salad, amazing rack of lamb, and yummy peach Melba for dessert. I left sooo satisfied and soo full! :-) One note, please ask that they be upfront and transparent about exactly which days their morning deliveries will be. B/c the amount of LOUD banging and clanging of said deliveries on the cobblestone street that starts RIGHT outside your room window on some days (Wednesday for me) from 6:30am til 9am is unbelievable. The racket is literally akin to having the drum section of a marching band right outside. If they had warned me I would have tried to have been asleep by 10pm. There is no way to mitigate the loudness either - no white noise machines or fans. Bring ear plugs - but even those probably won't help. Just go to sleep early those nights before so your sightseeing days won't be impacted.

We stayed here one night and it was a good experience. In lower season (early April), we paid…read morearound 120€ which is cheaper than most hotels on the actual Mont St. Michel, but close enough to be a 10-15 min bus/shuttle ride, with the stop located right across from the hotel. Location - I recommend staying close to Mont St. Michel (i.e. one of the hotels located just 10-15 min away from the actual "island") so you can get there early in the morning to avoid the crowds and see the tide changing. It's much cheaper than staying on the actual island which can be double the price. It was super easy to get to the "island" via the shuttle which comes really frequently. There's also a few restaurants close to here (Relais du Roy, next door), and a few places for a quick snack (Brioche Dorée, across the street, right where the big gift shop is). The big gift shop also sells food, water, etc. if you're hungry/thirsty or shampoo, soap, etc. Breakfast - The breakfast was included in the hotel rate, and was decent but not amazing. I didn't expect anything exceptional - it was a standard continental breakfast (yogurt, bread, croissants, cheese fruit, juice, tea, coffee). There's not really anything served hot, as most everything is cold. They start serving breakfast at 7 am so that you can take the early shuttle if you want. Room - The room is pretty small, like most European hotels. Its decor was pretty artsy/whimsical. The bathroom was fine too, a bit small but decent. I found the hotel to be clean and fairly new (not super modern and new, but it didn't feel like it was built in the 80s and never touched since then). Amenities - The WiFi was pretty slow and it was annoying that every 15 minutes or so it would boot you off and you would have to reconnect. We were only here for one night, so it wasn't so terrible, but if you are expecting to have fast/good internet and it's a deal-breaker for you, you may want to stay elsewhere. They don't have standard bath products in the hotel - just a multi-purpose shower gel & shampoo all in one product, so if you want conditioner and separate shampoo, bring your own. Parking - If you call them ahead of time, they will give you a one-time code to enter the gates into the area (it's a one-time, personal code just for you, so if you want to drive out of the area and then return, you'll have to get a new code from them). We got the code the day before our arrival, and it was 4€ for overnight parking which is pretty reasonable. The parking lot was adjacent to the hotel, so we didn't have to walk far with our bags. Overall, the location was great and perfect for the one night we wanted to stay here. It was worth paying a little extra for being so close to the shuttle, and I'm glad we didn't stay on the actual island, as we were able to get there super early in the morning anyways, and saved 100€ or so by staying just slightly further away. I would recommend this place if you're looking to stay overnight in the area.
