Wishing Well Jewellers is a traditional little jeweller tucked down a side road off London Road…read more Its selection is fairly average, comprising, well, exactly what you'd expect from a family jeweller with the odd bit of bling thrown in as an effort to bring it up to date. The reason I like this place is the expert behind the counter, who mends things skilfully (sometimes while you wait), and peruses things through a jeweller's glass as you browse, giving the whole place an air of Dickensian authenticity. He won't blink were you to take him an intricate old pocket watch, for example - he can put his hands instantly on the correct tools, and clearly has the knowhow to deal with pretty much anything you might need fixing. I took in a bracelet for a friend once in which the filigree clasp was the focus of the design, and had fallen off at a gig and been trampled on by a succession of excitable sixteen year olds before being rescued. He merely whipped out a succession of miniscule needle nosed pliers and almost by magic, restored it to perfect working order. He didn't even charge. He felt it was too easy. Altogether then, it's probably not worth the visit for the stock alone, but it would be an excellent choice for restoration and repairs.

It was laughable his reaction at what was a reasonable question. Obviously go there if your want an ego driven irritable moody A**hole to deal with. He didn't even know what metal the chain was made out of? And when questioned about another repair he had no idea what he was talking about. Go here to buy tacky secondhand/stolen rings. That fact that he has to buzz you in should have been warning enough that this wasn't in anyway a friendly welcoming premises. Stay AWAY!!!

I had a romantic notion of supporting a small, local business. At ChrisElli, romance is dead…read more Absolutely, I was responsible for reading that giant block of text on the sign at the counter. Instead I just read the heading, 'Extended Christmas Returns Policy.' Ah--good, if my friend doesn't like her new watch, I can return it. She didn't like it, and when I went to return it, ChrisElli drew me into a maddening debate about the meaning of 'return.' You can indeed return an item--for something else, or a credit note. (To the rest of the world this is called an 'exchange.') The bottom line is ChrisElli doesn't have a return policy, it has a no-refunds policy. I can't say whether they were being manipulative or just clumsy in their wording. And again, it was down to me to read the small print. What really matters here is in that the age of Amazon, a shop on a street needs to be competitive. It needs to go that extra mile for customers, building a good and trusting relationship over time. Desperately holding onto the customer's note after a sale is simply poor, disrespectful customer relations. If ChrisElli wanted to be competitive, it would take a look at all the places in Brighton that have similar stock and offer customers the courtesy of a refund. There are good small storefront businesses, and they're harmed by shops like ChrisElli that convince me I'm safer with giant corporate online vendors that have a straight-up refund policies and, often, lower prices. The only unique thing I found at ChrisElli was an infuriating semantic debate.

I ordered a Skagen watch which arrived a few days later but was broken. So i contacted them and…read moresent it back for an exchange. 2nd watch arrived a week later (very starnge was that it came from amazon not watches2u/Chriselli) and it was broken again. 10 minutes behind every day. So i wanted to have the money back for it, brought it to a post office (certificate of posting in my hands) sent it back with the label i printed and now no one has the watch. Watches2u refuse to pay the money back until they have the watch. I did my part, sent it back, can proof it so they would need to pay the money back but do not until they have it. Not customer friendly at all and i am sure that it is not legal to refuse the claim. BE CAREFUL

The general stock is always quite 'light' and not gaudy. Certainly not a store to frequent should you require some Bling! Whilst the majority of the stock is the kind of thing you would be buying for your girlfriend, there are also enough bracelets and necklaces of jade and citrine etc. for the more bohemian gentleman. I have bought myself a very nice amber bracelet from here before and more importantly received the thumbs up for presents to girlfriends. There is not always quite as much stock as some of the larger jewlers, but as the saying goes sometimes 'less is more'. The staff have always been helpful and will box up your purchase nicely, so that those who are lazy or inept at wrapping would be able to get away with giving the gift as it comes from the shop. The price is kind of wide ranging with nice pieces available for those on a budget, but also some fine items for shoppers wanting to spend out of something that will draw compliments at relevant functions. They regularly rotate their stock and display a nice range of items in the window. Highly recommended.
