My son playing with shapes at his daycare.
Chinda O.

My 1 year old son started attending here a couple of weeks ago and i can tell that he loves it here. Ever since he started, he has not cried for me every time I dropped him off. I get daily reports from the center from their app that they use and the teachers are very communicative. If there is anything my son needs, they will reach out and let me know. I like their system because even though they ask us parents to provide our kids breakfast and lunches, clothes, bottles, milk. I really don't mind because I am in control of what my son consumes, so I know he won't be eating something he's not suppose too, and I know that if he would have a BM, there's extra clothes that I brought him for him to change into. My son is actually lactose, so I provided the milk for them to give him. Not only do they report his meals, they also report how much milk he consumes, his nap times, and sends me pictures and videos throughout the day. It keeps me at ease to know what my son is doing while I'm working or in class. Therefore, if I would, I'd recommend this place to all parents. I would encourage the parents to check this place out if there find themselves unsure about the daycare they are looking for.

It made our kids feel very unsettled and without having experience at the day care, they felt isolated. The owner does not have as good information or control on what goes on in the day care every day. If there is conflict resolution, the teacher's are first, your kids are second, and you are last. I hope things have changed since we left a couple of years back. Some of the teachers were great. It's a nice spot and the food they had for the kids was good. The kids like to hang out at the park nearby afterwards - a good opportunity for littles to socialize. I would not recommend this day care.

We feel incredibly fortunate to have had the chance to enroll our son at Fox and Bear Daycare and highly recommend them for child care of any age. All pictures included came from the teachers at Fox & Bear. I would get pics daily, so got to see my little one grow even while he was away during my work days. There were so many activities which they adapted for all ages - art, crafts, outdoor play, soccer, dress-up, games, puzzles plus some multi-cultural holiday fun throughout the year. And, when the pandemic hit, they adapted a space to allow for the "bigger" kids to be in virtual class from Fox & Bear (kindergarten for our lil' one), so I could work from home and not be so distracted. That was a massive mental health saver for our family! Beyond all noted above, there's a special touch that Olga provides. Some due to her education in young child development and learning, but more just because of her heart. She loved my boy like a son and truly became a part of our family over the ~5 years she cared for him. She still remembers him on his birthday and, although we've moved away from the Bay Area, she still reaches out to check in. She's simply a beautiful person inside and out who will put her all into ensuring little ones will thrive while in her care, as well as far after they've moved onto to big kid school.

I learned so much about the Montessori method from my fellow co-teachers and was always inspired by their hard work and dedication to their craft. The BIM community as a whole is extremely tight-knit and supportive. I had never felt so loved and appreciated by the families I worked for before BIM, and it was heartening to witness new bonds and friendships being formed among everyone firsthand. When it came time to find a preschool for my son, I dreamed of a place that could offer him that same warmth and connection, and Golestan has given us exactly that and more. The first time I stepped into Golestan's "hayaat" (yard), I was instantly transported to my grandpa's garden in Iran. The laughter, the trees, the care woven into every detail. It's such a lively, loving, and vibrant space where my son learns, plays, makes friends, and creates lasting memories. The teachers are absolute angels, deeply nurturing, creative, and so attuned to each child. From the thoughtfully designed classrooms to the fresh, nourishing food (with ingredients straight from their learning garden!), every aspect of Golestan reflects an intentional, heartful approach to education and community. I feel truly honored for my son to spend his days in such a magical and enriching environment, surrounded by love, culture, and curiosity, and I'm already dreaming of the day my daughter can join. There is a reason this place only has 5-star reviews! As a first-time mom, I was extremely anxious about leaving my son with caregivers outside of family. What I didn't expect was that the wonderful teachers at Orkidz would start to feel like extended family to our baby. Before enrolling, I had heard plenty of horror stories about daycares where staff seemed disengaged or unhappy in their jobs. That has absolutely not been our experience here. The women at Orkidz genuinely LOVE children, and it shows every single day in the warmth, patience, and care they bring to the classroom. We toured several daycares before Orkidz, but the moment we walked in for our tour with Ms. Sheila, we were sold because no other place could compare. We were amazed with the facility, their library, their beautiful outdoor space, and the impressive commercial-style kitchen where they make yummy food for the kids. As for our son, I had prepared myself for difficult drop-offs and lots of crying. Instead, after a brief moment of confusion on his very first day (not sadness or separation anxiety because the teachers got to distracting him right away!), he settled in and adjusted to daycare immediately. He loves being around his little friends, is excited to go every morning, and is all smiles every time we come back to pick him up. Our son loves all the teachers, his face lights up when he sees them every morning, and he is especially attached to his primary teacher, Ms. Azadeh. They also have fun and engaging classes and we absolutely love the daily updates and pictures! In just a couple of months, we've already seen our now toddler become more social, curious, and comfortable around other children and adults. He also eats so well there and they have a variety of homecooked meals that I could never replicate. If you see a spot open at Orkidz, consider yourself lucky and save the spot as soon as you can - you will not regret it!

The bottom line is that my family's experience at GMIS has been only positive. The teachers and staff are truly what make GMIS a great place to be. They are so dedicated, passionate, and caring of all of the kids. My daughter's teachers regularly ask us about our pets and vacations because they take the time to remember the random things that my daughter tells them throughout the school day. (Now imagine having to do that for every single kid at the school.) More days than not they will re-braid my daughter's hair in beautiful, intricate patterns when sending her home. (Now imagine doing that for every single girl at the school.) It is my understanding that these sorts of experiences are not necessarily the norm at other larger Mandarin-immersion preschools in the Bay Area. Other things that I love about the school include their varied curriculum (teaching visitations from Lawrence Hall of Science; regular physical education with Soccer Shots; music class; Spanish instruction), their immaculate special events (Chinese New Year, Halloween, and end-of-year celebrations are spectacles in their own right), and attention to the natural world (a variety of school pets and school garden). I cannot say enough good things about GMIS, and we have already submitted our application and deposit for our second younger child to attend (hopefully) as soon as he turns two.

We shopped around *a lot* for a preschool for our child, starting when she was 6 months old. This was before the pandemic so we toured each school. We eventually realized we wanted a bilingual immersion Montessori program for our daughter, and looked into several in the east bay. We chose to apply to GMIS because the cultural programs were appealing and we liked the facility. We toured and liked the teachers. We were set to enroll last year, and paid a $2k deposit. As the time drew closer for our enrollment a series of things happened to make us question our choice. First, the school was not transparent about their COVID protocols or staff vaccination status. We called and emailed the school several times, but didn't get a response at all during the three weeks preceding our start date -- nothing from school administrators or the office. No reply at all. The only thing we heard from the school was from their third-party billing agency, letting us know we were due to pay tuition. We also had a couple basic questions regarding some state-mandated documents notifying us about a claim of physical abuse by one of the teachers, who was accused of physically punishing a student. We asked for more context but no response. At this point, it started to feel weird; we were about to drop $18k on preschool but couldn't get a call or email back about basic facts about how the school was responding to issues about our child's physical safety. The protocols were eventually published into the website, a few days before the first day, but at this point the lack of response led us to notify the school to let them know that we were going to withdraw our kid. I This is when it got super weird. Out of the blue we got a call from Vivi, the schools "executive director." (Executive director of a preschool? Eh, ok, sure.) During the next hour, Vivi talked non-stop in a frantic monologue -- skipping around between information about the incident with the abuse, COVID, her school's financial stability, the Chinese cultural programs, her problems with the office staff, etc. I mean, at least an hour and we could hardly get a word in edgewise. At this point we were freaked out--I told Vivi we were fine to lose the deposit, but wouldn't be enrolling our child. This news made her more agitated and she was talking a mile a minute about her legal standing with the abuse claim and the policies about our deposit and the process for removing a student, etc. Totally manic. We loved the school when we toured, but this felt shady. Several months later, we got a check in the mail with our deposit, no note or letter, written in this crazy writing... (?) OK, great, but the whole deal was so weird, so lacking in basic professionalism, and unhinged, that we were glad to move on. I'm sure there are some great teachers here and don't doubt the positive experiences of others, but for our family, this place was way too sketchy to entrust with the well being of our child.
