Sandra, the owner and artist, is super friendly and engaging. Her studio where she does mosaics and also teaches classes is to the left. The rest of the space is dedicated to vintage clothing and lots of tchotchke! Most items totally unique, the kind that 99% of the people would say, "who would ant this?" While one person sequels with delight and says, " I have to have this!" An obvious love of Japanese fabrics and memorablia, there was a large selection of Japanese Kimonos. The blue and white one caught my attention immediately but it was surprisingly long and several inches would drag on the floor if I bought it. As part of a charity event for breast cancer, Sandra designed two bras that are hanging on the wall and had me laughing out loud. One adorned with Lipton tea bags that say "Your small cup can make a big difference." And a bra with cups resembling a monkey with bananas dangling from the band. What a hoot! A collection of Manley Men featuring troubadours and Elvis, piggy banks, mismatched dishes, glasses and serving pieces, art, Asian figurines, and clothing fills the space. No purchases for me this visit but I will definitely stop in again next time I'm driving through! Monkeyshine just celebrated their 10th anniversary and I wish them many more!

Evidently this building used to house a bank and the huge safe is still there against the back right wall. The day I was there, they had several pieces of wood furniture with a live edge, which I love. There was the most amazing high top table - if only I had that kind of money! Also some console tables and a coffee table. All spectacular. Bright glassware, dishes, vases and sculptures also caught my eye as did the pretty pieces of pottery, all displayed in lucite cases and in tables allowing it to be seen. Lots of paintings on the wall and on the partitions. And some enlarged photographs, too, by Brian Chambers. His pictures of the wildflowers with the Gorge in the background are breathtaking! And very affordable for the artistry. Definitely fun to browse and see if something catches your eye that you just have to have! The gentleman working that day was friendly, helpful and in no way pressuring. He let me browse at my leisure and provided answers to my questions. I will check back from time to time as I am seeking a piece of art and have something in mind. I'll know it when I see it!

Rose's Native Designs - Had to get some beautiful jewelry to take home to LA

I found Rose's Native Designs after a long Google search looking for a local business that carried…read moresmudging supplies. I called the store on a Saturday afternoon and spoke to a woman who had the items I was after, and so we drove to Toppenish that afternoon to visit. Rose's is easy to find via Mapquest, right in downtown Toppenish across from City Hall. On a sunny day, surrounded by murals, the environment is welcoming and unique. Entering Rose's, we found the shop's owners were away, but the lady there (her name escapes me) greeted us and knew what I was looking for. The shop is full of all kinds of Native pieces, many of which are handmade by locals. There are dreamcatchers of all shapes, colors, and sizes, decorative Native items, many with wild animals on them such as wolves, bears, and eagles. There are unique jewelry pieces, different styles of medicine bags, beadwork items, as well as supplies for making your own pieces (beads, clasps, feathers, leather and suede material, stones, arrowheads, etc.). My mission to Rose's was for smudging supplies. I wanted sage and an abalone shell. Rose's had beautiful shells, one of which I immediately snatched up. There was a selection of smudging sage, both water and white, as well as sweetgrass. They carry small and large size bundles with very reasonable prices--it's been a few months, but I believe I got the shell for about $8, and the sage was between $4-8 depending on kind and size. Reasonably-priced in my opinion, even compared to prices on Amazon, PLUS you are getting local items, which happens to be important to me. We browsed with the kids (there are many breakables, so parents be attentive!) for over an hour looking at everything and chatting with the shopkeeper. I left feeling content with my purchases, and a wonderful sense of peace and tranquility (a lovely side-effect for those who are more, shall I say, "spiritually tuned"). We smudged at home and the sage was wonderful. It and the abalone shell are permanently displayed in a special place in our home. We have gone back since, with the same pleasant experience and helpful shopkeeper, to purchase various beads, medicine bags (they have fur and leather!), more sage, dried lavender, and a dreamcatcher. We've been consistently pleased with the shop's variety of items, quality, prices, and helpful staff. If you're ever in Toppenish, or if you're a local in search of Native items, I'd recommend you stop at Rose's Native Designs--it is a little gem well worth a look around!
