This shop is located in the Carson City Senior Center and is open Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 3 PM. When I pointed out that the website said they closed at 3:30 PM, the volunteer apologized and said it was been that way for years. Much to my surprise, a few hours later it was corrected on the web, without me even requesting that. For this gift shop, seniors who are 62 and older make crafts, jewelry, accessories, etc., and sell them here on consignment. 15% of the proceeds goes to Meals on Wheels, which the Carson Senior Center runs. The remaining 85% goes directly to the person who consigned the craft, so they may have some extra income! All items are new. They accept consignments Tuesdays and Wednesdays only. I asked if disabled people under 62 could sell items there, and the volunteer was not sure, but said to come back in a short while when the manager would be there. The store has an enormous amount of items for sale, all very colorful. They have such diverse items as scarves, quilts, throw pillows, wigs, trinkets, pictures, trucks, teddy bears, home decor, jewelry, walking sticks, etc. The volunteer I spoke to was oh so nice and professional. They take the four major credit cards according to the sign on their windows, but the bulletin board inside says just three: MasterCard, Visa, and Discover. They also take cash, but no longer accept checks. The store is so bright and colorful, I want to come back here soon to shop!

March is Women's History Month and National Disability Awareness Month Born in 1913 in Smithtown, N.Y Elsie Ott attended Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing in New York City after completing high school. Ott joined the US Army Air Corps Army Nurse Corps in September 1941. She was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, sent to Louisiana and Virginia USA then Karachi, India. As World War II progressed beginning September 1939, US Army Air Force Air Transport Command grew quickly into the world's biggest airline. Its routes circled the globe transporting passengers and cargo. That demonstrated the potential of global air evacuation of wounded GIs. World War II forced the US Army Air Corps to pioneer military medical care because of the quickly resulting development of air evacuations of wounded GIs. One of those pioneers was Flight Nurse 2nd Lieutenant Elsie S. Ott. She was on the first intercontinental air evacuation aka air ambulance flight. It originated from Karachi, India to evacuate wounded GIs directly to Walter Reed military hospital in Washington, D.C. Ott received her assignment to this historic flight with only 24 hours' notice. She had no flying experience and had never flown before. The only medical equipment available to her was a first aid kit. No medical professional screened the patients who were to fly with Ott, and she and a Sergeant with a medical background were the only people on board to care for patients. The military evacuation plane left Karachi, India with five wounded GIs 17 January 1943. Normally a three-month trip by ship, after stops along the way for refueling, the US Army Air Force plane reached Walter Reed military hospital nearly a week after beginning. This shortened time for medical care was life-saving to wounded GIs. Ott knew that her report on this first med evac trip would be crucial for further planning, and she immediately sat down to make notes for future med evac flights. She listed the need for oxygen, more wound-dressing supplies, more coffee and blankets. She also noted that her wearing a skirt was impractical for this kind of Duty. Two months later, Ott received US Air Medal, the first given to a woman in the US Army, for her role in the evacuation flight. The Air Medal is awarded to US and civilian personnel for single acts of heroism or meritorious achievements while participating in aerial flight and foreign military personnel in actual combat in support of operations. Required achievement is less than that required for the Distinguished Flying Cross, but must be accomplished with distinction above and beyond that expected of everyday Duty. It is not awarded for peace time sustained operational activities and flights. Ott was promoted to Captain. World War ended 2 September 1945. She was Honorably Discharged in 1946. Nearly 20 years later in 1965, Captain Ott was selected to christen a new type of air ambulance: the C-9 Nightingale.

When we got there the owner, Julie was standing on the porch painting the most incredible Floral I've ever seen, her artwork is just spectacular. We went inside and the house goes forever, all kinds of rooms and little alcove filled with the most amazing antiques and collectibles plus beautiful items for the house. My daughter-in-law bought an iron stone soap, dish, and found out that August 14 and 15th will be a big sale there 50% off everything in the store. The staging of the items is beautiful, lovely touches everywhere. If you are into all kinds of beautiful things and antiques collectibles and things to decorate your home with, I would suggest you go there. Make sure you have plenty of time because there's so much to look at so many beautiful things.
