Now that I'm safely well ahead of you in my studies, I will invite you to join. (; As soon as you exit the elevator to the floor where the Italian Cultural Institute is housed, you are transported. The instructors are all Italian, and there is often a cultural program going on on the floor during the evening classes, so you are immersed in Italian culture. I was hesitant to take night classes as I'm usually pooped after work, but this fear was abandoned on day one of class A1-1. Classes are taught in Italian, and the instructors are masters of judging exactly when to switch to English and when to switch back. You may not catch every word, and this can be intimidating at first, but it's astounding how quickly your ear adjusts. The classes are challenging and engaging, and Silvia is one of the best instructors I've ever had. This is coming from a life-long student. The staff is friendly and helpful, and I cannot describe to you the infectious energy you will experience and share with your fellow students and instructors at this extraordinary institution. Originally I'd wanted to learn enough Italian to converse adequately during my travels. Now I'm inspired to try and become fluent enough to be able to read Umberto Eco in his native language.

Elena is an amazing instructor. She keeps the content engaging, easy to follow/understand, and fun. The setup of the class is conversation based, so you're constantly speaking with your classmates and putting the learnings into practice. I would recommend Elena's classes to anyone in Chicago looking to learn a new language. I never felt like I'd be able to learn a new language as an adult - but Elena makes it exciting and enjoyable. I married into a Czech family with little cultural awareness outside of what I had learned through…read moremy in laws and only had taken Romance languages in high school. I stared taking adult Czech language classes on and off and both times Klára then Kristýna had both been incredibly instructive, patient, and inviting. It can be humbling being a beginner but I always felt safe making mistakes and struggling and learning with the pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. I had taken a semester of Latin previously which helped me be ready for declensions. It was also a great way to learn more about my in law's culture and traditions. The school also puts on a lot of events with artists, historians, and the community at large to celebrate the Czech history and culture in Chicagoland and abroad. Everyone I've met is a fantastic steward of the culture and we're lucky to have them here. We'll be sending our 4 and 6 year olds there in the fall! It's reassuring to see their first cohort of their youngest students not just sticking with it but having really enjoyed their many years together learning.

So many people said it was engaging and fun and they learned so much more about the history and culture of being deaf. I was looking for something more engaging and holistic so I signed up! Now, having just completed level 1, I am so glad I did! I'm so impressed with how much I learned in such a short amount of time! Matt structures the class in a way that makes the information so much easier to learn. He groups words with similar hand gestures or themes together and explains why a sign is the way it is so you really understand the root of things. Another person said in their review that you learn actual conversation and not just vocabulary and it's so true! I feel like I can actually communicate using ASL even after just a few classes. And Matt teaches so much more than sign language. He really gives us insight and perspective into what it means to be Deaf. He uses his personal experiences and knowledge of Deaf Culture to create a tangible learning experience for his students. I'm so glad I signed up and can't wait to complete all four levels.
