The idyllic hills and surrounding trees make this a lovely walk. The tour guide was informative and fairly friendly. The staff kinda led us a little stray from the tour when we arrived, but they figured things out. The museum itself seems a lot more low-key than Hancock Shaker, the latter being a more vast museum and includes more exhibits and things to see, such as farm animals. With this museum, you'll get a good sense of Shaker living and see some of their aspects of their lives. However, the tour guide will give you a richer sense of what they did and why. The Shakers are an intriguing and interesting people and definitely worth a look. The gift shop offers various Shaker crafts and books. Plus there's a video in the back on the village that you can watch for free. You can go into some of the individual buildings, but many of them were closed, which was a little discouraging and felt limiting. So while I do think this was a good visit and still worth it, Hancock Shaker is a better place to go to learn about the people. (I haven't been to Sabbathday Shaker in Maine yet)

The Shakers were not like the Amish in that they embraced technology and were one of the first villages in New Hampshire to use electricity. (The Shakers and the Quakers were also totally different groups.) The buildings are original, as is most of the furnishings. I HIGHLY recommend you take advantage of the free guide, who will take you into many of the buildings and explain how and why the Shakers were so successful. As you may know, the Shakers were celibate and it seems inevitable that they would die out. However, many people joined the group because of their views about peace and harmony. Also, they willingly adopted orphaned children. These children grew up in the village and frequently stayed, so that the number of people actually increased for over 200 years. This village is well worth the stop and I very much highly recommend this excellent experience.

I have been adding to our native plant gardens for many years, and I found three healthy unusual plants I have been looking for as well estaished plants already in bud, very reasonably priced. Unfortunately I have trouble walking , and could not walk up and visit their lovely gardens. Excellent guide map gives a little blurb about each significant stop, and leads you around so you don't miss a thing. It is not a huge place where you walk half a mile in between sculptures, it is a pleasant path of regularly-occurring creative elements to observe and appreciate. Look up, down, and all around so you don't miss the many sculptures made from reclaimed salvage. Barbells, band saws, cymbals, farm implements -- all welded together in artistic ways that guide you along the path. Meanwhile, flora and fauna of unique varieties abound. Benches and chairs here and there. We strolled along and spent about 90 minutes doing the loop on the grounds. So much to see, so many deep breaths to take, plenty of picnic spots. Good bathrooms, interesting gifts, something for all ages. Hidden gem.

I can't say enough about how welcoming the staff is and how accessible each work of art is to the public. It was like being transported to the past where people trusted each other and knew they it was a privilege to walk among such treasures. I was going to call the museum small, but it is not. We were only able to spend an hour gazing at its wonders and covered only about a third of the space. It is some place we would certainly return to in the future if we visit Manchester.

If you're a fan of FLW, you definitely need to do the tour from the Currier Museum where you can…read morenow visit both the Zimmerman House and this one, a more recent addition to their collection. It could hardly be more different from the Zimmerman, being built mostly from pre-cast concrete bricks. It's one of Wright's 'Usonian Automatic' homes; this means that he sent you the plans and measurements and you had to build it yourself after casting all the concrete bricks yourself from a variety of moulds. Not an easy task even for the most dedicated home builder, and not surprising that only seven of them were ever built. Much of the original furniture is no longer present, but it still has the original kitchen and stove/oven. The long bench seat under the windows has been partially restored and the Currier have been adding other bits of furniture that you can actually sit on while you listen to the docent's talk. It's unmistakably a Wright house, but with all the concrete blocks and glass it felt rather cold and industrial. I don't think I would have liked to live in it, unlike the Zimmerman house just along the road. Book the tour from the Currier Museum of Art, it's well worth it to see both of these Wright creations.

There…read moreis so much packed beautifully into every square inch of this cottage-style place, you can walk off your giant crullers from Northwoods Brewing just down the street. Which is how we discovered this store, that somehow inexplicably did not have a Yelp entry, so I've started one. What a treasure trove of knick-knacks, home and garden and porch decor, gifts galore, rustic country chic accents, candles, tchotchkes, handmade items, makers workshops, and seasonal decor (we went when fall/Halloween decor was the main theme). Not only a terrific selection of unique items, but haut points for creative displays and beautiful use of the space itself. Carefully curated, thoughtfully and passionately presented. We were driving by from about an hour away (en route to those crullers!), and didn't know this store even existed. We happened to glance left, and saw serious potential gifties outside. Few places warrant the good ole screeching U-Turn (lol, it was a safe U-Turn) but this store certainly earned it The shop is set back just enough as to be easily missed on this busy road, so watch for the big Country Hills Gifts sign. But, my country decor-loving friends, do not miss this hidden gem.
