You've all heard of helicopter parenting, yeah? It's a mess and screwing up today's children, but I'm totally guilty of helicopter doggie parenting. All of which is to say that I'm not going to drop Gus off at some random place while I go to work. Step 1 (which I think the other reviewer skipped/missed): call them and make an appointment. Taking a strange dog into a place full of dogs is a little dicey. Typically, new dogs are brought over on Saturday (when there are no other dogs around) so Barbara can get a sense of its temperament. Barbara is great with dogs and has a ton of experience, but I totally had the, "well, if my kid isn't good enough for them, screw them!" thoughts running through my head. Obviously, Barbara instantly saw the inherent awesomeness of Gus. Step 2: learn to let go. I don't have kids, but I imagine this is pretty much the same as dropping them off at daycare. The first few times, they scream and cry when you leave and you're left feeling like a terrible person for the rest of the day. Then one day, magically, they're excited to go to daycare (or Bow WoW) and they don't even look back while they're led away to the playroom. It's a bittersweet moment, but one can't help but feel a little proud. See what I mean about the anthropomorphizing thing? Bow Wow separates the dogs by size and organizes the day into blocks of play, rest, and exercise so the dogs don't get overstimulated, which can cause stress. The staff is excellent about communicating with owners about even minor changes in your dog's behavior and simply giving you updates about how your dog's socialization and adjustment. I think I spent the first 2-3 weeks asking, "Is he playing? Is he making friends?" on a daily basis. The entire staff was very good about humoring me. Gus loves it there (his radar triggers around 21st street and he starts to flip out in the car) and I feel safe about leaving him there. And honestly, when it comes to a doggie day care, that's all that matters.

As an owner of an athletic / energetic breed, I'm not sure if we will continue to pay for a mere 20 minutes when many other insured Pittsburgh companies charge the same price for 30 or even 45-minute visits. We still love the people behind Two Dads, and continue to support them, but they are now seemingly out of our budget.

In fact, last summer I unfortunately broke my foot. Dan even walked out to my car to help take Hugo inside, as I was in a boot and using crutches. Dan also takes great pride in keeping the Golden Bone meticulously clean and tidy. He is a very kind and personable young man. He provides exceptional customer service! Hugo is always wagging his tail as we pull into the Golden Bone's parking lot. I have stayed with her but now I cannot. I called the day before my appointment for my female Airedale terrier this week. She's raised her prices again and I wanted to know the price. She quoted me $85 which as a $20 jump but I accepted it. The morning of the appointment my girl came in with small burr seeds in her coat. I spent some time brushing her legs and belly as well as beard to remove the bulk of them, her torso too but it is quite short cut. My dogs are very active but given the dry hot weather (and fact I've showered them numerous times to cool them off) she was not that dirty since there's no mud to get into as she loves to do. I dropped her off with clipping instructions to take her a bit shorter on her legs. When I arrived to pick her up I was charged $107. This is the second time with has been done to me and this time it was a slap in the face given I called the day before for the price. (I was charged $20 extra another time for my boy which I thought was slimy business practices. Dogs are dirty, groomers clean dogs. That's your business, right?) I protested the extra charge. The girl said "I talked to Rachel, had to bath her twice and she was matted). Bull. She was not matted as I brushed her before I brought her. She shouldn't have needed two baths if she was bathed properly the first time. And she says the new cut took longer. If you don't know a proper groom for an Airedale that is your problem. You are dog groomers who should know your business. And she nicked Mina's private parts in the process. I met a woman right after at another groomers I stopped at on the way home who also used to go the GT with Jen but found Rachel's grooming skills and professionalism lacking. Long story short. I'm done. I will not go back. You're a business owner but won't be for long at this rate, Rachel. Ps. I just got off the phone with Rachel. Although I was told the additional bathe I was charged extra now is standard - she said and I quote 'we bath all dogs twice; b) that the $85 was just a 'base price' so any additional charges- beware! They can charge what they like. And then she hung up on me.
