Green Acres is the place for me!…read more If you're looking for a place close to Deercreek (I guess they're calling it Verizon Wireless Center these days) where you can do what you want and nobody will bother you, this is it. I'm not sure they're open when there aren't shows, but their website says they are now hosting private camp outs as well, so that's interesting. I've been coming here sine 1995, and have never had a problem. In recent years they've even offered late night live bands and vendors for some of the bigger jamband shows. The grass is pokey to be sure, so bring some extra padding for the floor of the tent. If you want shade, go early and grab one of the few spots that might shield you from the morning sun. The pictures on the website make it look like a nice shady grove with nice plush grass and that is so not the case. And I've never seen these showers they boast, I think they might be referring to some hoses behind the main house in front. It's in the middle of some cornfields and not so easy to find late at night so print out a good map. Remember that leaving the amphitheater the traffic people might direct you in some crazy direction so you will need to be able to find your way back. It's not a place to go if you expect peace and quiet. The bathrooms are port-a-potties, but they are usually maintained. (I can't speak for the drunk guy that used it before you.)

Has anyone done this while trying to shower a young child? Terrible if you have long hair and trying to shampoo. Let's be honest you pay double at Jellystone, pay extra for everything that comes free at other campgrounds like the bouncy pillows, let me adjust the water temp and take a hot shower. The water in shower has lots of iron, potable water my daughter said tasted like blood lol (that's the iron) If you are traveling with kids through the area, you want the pool to be open late, there isn't a lifeguard on duty anyway. Let parents have access to the pool so we can swim with our kids that have been seatbelted for hours. That would make a campground family friendly not Cute characters. Other wise most of the staff was very friendly and facilities clean. Gaga ball was very fun late at night but bring your own kickball or volleyball. Because the office closed at 5 pm and so does most everything else including cornhole. But if you don't mind paying extra for all the fun activities you get free at other campgrounds (we camp a lot, just camped from Ohio to Montana, and Ohio to Wyoming) and have are staying more than one night it's a nice clean place, was definitely the most expensive we camped at in our 3 weeks of camping nightly.

The walk-in sites were really spread apart and you couldn't see or hear your neighbors at all - this is even with every site taken! It was quiet, clean and relaxing. We picked a spot way in the back (#19 the best spot ever) and set up for a great evening. The whole process of getting a spot was quite tricky and I became easily confused. If you aren't used to the whole process here's how it goes: 1. Arrive EARLY, especially if you are going on a Saturday. The sites renew at 10 a.m., check out is noon. I recommend getting there around 9:15 a.m. to get there before people leave and have first dibs. 2. Stop at the little ranger house and pick up a yellow envelope. The envelope has two parts. One part is to reserve your spot on the reservation board, the other is to put money in once you pick your spot. 3. Drive to the walk-in site parking lot. Take a look at the board and see what spots are available, pick a spot and then clip your piece of paper (without the money) to the board. 4. Grab your stuff and walk to the site. If the site is somehow taken, you can't do anything about it - first come, first serve basis. 5. Repeat 3 & 4 until you find a spot. 6. Go back to the ranger hut and deposit your money. 7. Drag your crap through the woods and set up camp! Hint The spots towards the front are easier to get to, but also noisier and your neighbors are closer. The mid-20 numbered sites seemed to be the best spots. Also, I saw a lot of online bickering in regards to alcohol. Here's the deal, be courteous, be responsible, get some plastic cups and that giant keg for the picnic table is not a good idea. They come around around 9 or 10 to check the site and lecture you about peeing in the woods (I got caught with my pants down). Keep it on the DL and don't be a jerk and you'll be a happy camper!

But if you're looking for a simple, cozy, and clean campground to rest at the end of the day, this is a good place to go. My kids played on the playground a bit and also swam in the pool. No complaints from either one of them. They have a putt putt course, but we didn't get a chance to try it out because we were mostly in New Castle to visit family, plus, it was raining a lot, so the opportunity wasn't there to begin with. The campground is small, but it's plenty for taking my dogs on a walk. The bath house is clean and updated, not dingy and gross, so that's definitely a positive. They have an events calendar and we happened to be here for some games for the kids on Saturday in the activities room area. The staff was very kind to us. We would gladly come back the next time we're in New Castle.

It's 40 acres,…read morewith hiking trails, a creek, a suspension bridge that goes over the creek, and interpretive signs that tell you where to go and what kind of animals you might see along the way. Somewhere among all this is also a campground that's available on the weekends. You need to make arrangements with the park in order to camp here. Unlike a park, where things tend to be more out in the open, this nature preserve seemed somewhat isolated. That's part of the reason why I didn't explore too much -- I was alone and had forgotten my pepper spray. I could hear my dad's voice in my head as I started to go deeper into the woods by myself. He always ends his phone calls with "Watch your back" (thanks, dad, I love you, too), and I wasn't doing a good job of watching my back. Not that there's anything nefarious about this nature preserve! Not at all! But I just wanted to mention that it can feel a little isolated, at least the parts that I saw. While I was there, I also saw a woman in the creek -- it looked like she was creek stomping? And I saw a woman walking her leashed dog. At the parking lot, there is one picnic bench that overlooks the creek, and a couple of port-a-potties. If you take the trail from the parking lot that goes to the right (don't ask me what the cardinal direction is, because hahahaha, yeah right), you'll find the Thornwood Nature Center. It was closed when I visited because it's only open on the weekends from April through October. I'll have to come back to check it out!
