    Angela and baby #2
    Terri G.

This is the midwife that turned my birthing experience around! After a very hard and scary hospital birth with my first, I was very nervous for my second. Angela is so caring and intentional that from the very first appointment I knew the second birthing experience would be completely different. She and all the midwives that work with her are extremely knowledgeable and have tips and tricks to help with everything from pregnancy to postpartum. You can tell that Angela truly loves and cares for each of her patients by the time she gives them and her calm compassion. I am about to have my 3rd baby with her (4th baby total) and I wouldn't want anyone else as my midwife!

Before I go any further, PLEASE NOTE; I do not and did not expect to be treated free of charge nor a reduced charge. Also, the clinic is aesthetically pleasing (although very cold), and the student midwife was an absolute angel who I wish I could have had as my primary care-giver while attending the clinic. Angela was incredibly condescending and lacking in any bedside manner whatsoever. I had only 3 visits with her. Numerous times she commented on how young I was to be having children, even going as far as to say to herself "my daughter is 20 now..." in reference to when I gave birth to my first kiddo. As well, she truly spent an entire hour long session making me go in to extreme detail revolving any depressive episode, past eating disorders (to which she then commented on how "small" of a person I already am...big yikes), and childhood trauma I experienced. We arent talking about the typical rundown to make sure theres not conflicting symptoms of these experiences that could impact birth or postpartum. I'm very used to that cycle when finding a new care provider of any sort. This was much more than that, digging for SPECIFIC details on things that she clearly had no training nor manners in which to address or respond to (again, the student midwife was a dream, but this isnt the student's practice. It's Angela's.) I was visibly uncomfortable the entire time and asking if she really needed to those details, which were more intensive than any therapy session I've ever had, and the responses were uneducated and extremely insensitive ~ she simply had no place to be asking these things if she did not have training to properly address them or respond to them. Her responses very easily could have sent someone less-healed in to an absolute spiral. Her website claims that children and siblings are welcome to appointments, however the one time I brought my two year old to an appointment she called her a "distraction", put no effort whatsoever to baby-safe the clinic room prior to our arrival (and she had over 24 hours notice that the baby was coming with) and truly did not seem to have any idea how to actually handle a two year old. My child is very curious but she isnt ill-behaved, and thats not a biased opinion. She is a very average two year old. Angela expected her to sit quietly on her bottom next to me on the couch for an entire hour. Again, the student midwife was amazing as far as helping entertain and interact with my daughter. Angela acted like she had never engaged with a toddler in her life. When my life circumstances changed and I could no longer afford the set payment schedule, I sat down and told her that the person helping me make payments was no longer able to do so, and that I needed to figure out another payment schedule...I kid you not, this woman said "thats unfortunate but if you do not pay me I *flops hands in air* cant help you". I said "no, I understand that you dont work for free and dont expect that, but I can't make $800 per visit" and she responded exactly as she had prior. "we can work with you, but if you dont pay then we cant help you". I reiterated, I did not expect her to work for free or for a discounted price, but simply that $800 a visit was not do-able anymore (and hadn't been, since I never thought it was $800 per visit on the plan I selected). She responded yet the same. It was very cold, very blunt, and very unconcerned with anything other than being paid. Which I totally understand it's her job, her career, she has bills, but there are more professional and empathetic ways to get that across other than "well sorry but if you dont pay, I cant do anything for you." After all this (and more that I cant disclose for safety reasons) I decided to cancel care with her and look elsewhere. I explained that the ill-mannered and forced discussion of trauma details had left a bad taste in my mouth, to which she responded "I said we didnt have to talk about it again, but maybe you just heard what you wanted to hear." as well as saying she "hopes you find people who truly and genuinely love and care for you..." wtf? due to the pandemic, I found out I wouldnt be able to be seen at my new provider until I was 31 weeks along. Mind you I'm currently 25 weeks...so I'm due for some testing. I asked about this and they said I could have my previous midwife send them an order for the testing. I'm hypoglycemic and am at a higher risk for this condition, yet Angela simply didn't care about anything other than another $800 to order an essential lab. So, if you're married or partnered, over the age of 25, and extremely privileged in your income to the point of $300 increases not phasing you (during a pandemic), as well as leading an extremely neurotypical life, then by all means, go ahead and attend her care because I'm sure you'll have a great experience.

Transferred care to Angela and her team at 26 weeks after realizing I did not want a hospital birth, especially in the middle of a pandemic. Angela immediately made me feel calm and excited about having a home birth, and did not appear stressed or overwhelmed to be meeting me so far along. She is extremely thorough with her appointments and makes sure to cover every evidence based check box. What I mean is she reviews the available and existing evidence regarding your options for testing, labs, and medications for you and baby, and actually provides INFORMED consent! She is very calm and clear, does not rush through anything, and genuinely cares about her clients and their well being, not just how baby is doing. Her entire team made me feel so empowered and confident heading into my birth, which was a home birth in the water with my first baby! Everything went amazing and they provided excellent labor support. I highly recommend Angela and her team at GLOW! She also has students which are always amazing. Lastly, the postpartum care CANNOT be beat. If you are debating about having a home birth, the postpartum care alone is worth it. So important and necessary! I am 3 weeks out from my birth and feel incredible. I should mention I am a nurse midwife and nurse practitioner myself! So I definitely did my research and picked GLOW because it felt like the safest and best option for a low risk mama like myself. Oh and she was super quick and responsive over text which you always want in a midwife ;)

I am so thankful to have the care I received under amazing midwives from Glow while I was pregnant with our second son. My first sons birth was traumatic for me. I feel like I received unnecessary interventions and pressure to have a baby on the hospitals schedule. I also hemorrhaged, and feel the hospital did not perform the due diligence in my scenario because, what I believe, is short staff and nurse staff turnover throughout the night/day of my first son's birth. I felt so safe and cared for throughout the whole term of my second pregnancy. The knowledge and professionalism of my Glow midwives is something I and my husband really appreciated. My second son was born at home, naturally, no interventions, within ~2 hours of our midwives' arrival. They monitored the baby and I every 10 minutes, were supplied with all necessary equipment you would find in an ambulance, we had a plan weeks ahead of time for reasons to transport to hospital (i.e. fever, baby in distress, Mother's intuition, etc.). I truly feel having a baby in a comfortable environment with those you trust makes a tremendous difference in child birth. If you are considering home birth or hospital birth with a midwife, I would highly recommend Glow Midwifery!

A long awaited arrival. Being cared for at home with the Glow midwives.

And I've sat on this for a couple years but am now compelled to share because my friend has now been also forced into a hospital birth even though her labor was advancing ideally, and now I'm just mad. They seem to have the same "easy button" policy as most hospitals do, and in general that's not why we go seeking out midwives. Alma is corporate midwifery, shoving people through the very gauntlet we have left mainstream medical childbirth to avoid. At the end of it, the individual midwives are lovely--I'm still friends with my midwife to this day--but the company itself treats birthing mothers as the exact same commodity that traditional western hospitals do. If I had it to do again, I would have followed that midwife-assistant to a more personal experience.

The…read moremoment I found out I was pregnant with our first child my number one stress was "where am I going to have this baby?!" I've had bad experiences with hospitals and almost always feel like I'm not being heard as a patient. This is such a HUGE life chapter to go through I really didn't want to be surrounded by strangers making me feel like my voice didn't matter and that birth was some sort of major medical procedure rather than a natural life event. In steps... Alma! Someone had mentioned them to me so my husband and I went and met with Laura who walked us through what a pregnancy and birth with Alma would entail. Wow! It was so refreshing to feel so comfortable and at home in a clinical setting. From day one they made me feel welcome and heard. Another huge blessing about Alma was that from our first appointment they were upfront about what the total cost of having our baby at the birth center would be (permitting there were no complications). I cannot tell you how incredibly refreshing it was to know an amount ahead of time so that we could budget and be prepared. Our baby was born healthy with no issues and I can tell you the price we paid is exactly what they quoted us nine months earlier. What I also loved and appreciated, was for all our check up appointments before our baby arrived we saw one of two midwives and an assistant midwife. And so we knew when our baby came it would be one of those two who would be helping us deliver. It meant so much to me to have grown a relationship of trust and kindness with these women before hand. It made going into labor so much more peaceful and not stressful knowing that I knew and liked the team that was helping me. The birthing suites are just the perfect balance of a medical and home setting. So many people had no idea what I meant when I said we were having our baby had a birth center. So I just told them it's not as cold as a hospital, but it's more medical than a home. It was so inviting and will always hold a special place in my heart. There's so much more I could say, but these are the biggest things of why I am so grateful for Alma and why I can say with confidence...this is where will have all our future children.

During our first meeting, Sharon told me about the birth work that she did in the Philippines and said something like, "I wish I could just be the village midwife and get paid in bread and fish." This was so telling of the kind of person Sharon is: she is really in this because she is passionate about birth work - not just as a job or a way to pay the bills. Throughout our time together, I felt genuinely loved and expertly cared for. Our monthly meetings were slow paced, filled with patient answers to my many questions as a first time mom. Sharon possesses a wealth of knowledge on all things pregnancy and birth, and was mentoring a wonderful student - Max - throughout the process, who we loved having on our birth team. Both my husband and I are mixed race, so it meant a lot to us to have a midwife of color - mixed race herself - who could bring that perspective. So much about pregnancy is calibrated for an average white person. Sharon always had the understanding that there is a lot of variation among human beings, especially across ethnicities, and always made us feel seen and cared for. After our 20 week ultrasound, we had a scare about the baby and my health. Sharon was there by our side every step of the way, even offering to come with me to the gynecological oncologist appointments. At this point, Sharon feels like a member of our family and it's hard to imagine that we soon won't be seeing her regularly. I highly recommend her for anyone seeking a warm, caring, knowledgeable midwife. I couldn't be more grateful to have walked the path to motherhood with Vivante midwifery as my guide.

As I was choosing, the most important criteria for me were: safety, kindness, respect, experience, and midwives with the ability to navigate both the home and hospital birthing environments. Vivante Midwifery blends the warmth of midwifery with rigorous safety standards and deep knowledge about physiologic birth. Because of my personal medical history, I needed to give birth at the hospital. I was still able to do all of my prenatal and postpartum care with Vivante. One of the midwives also accompanied me to the hospital and stayed to advocate for me throughout the entire birth. It made giving birth at the hospital much less stressful. I'm not sure I would have been able to achieve a vaginal birth without the advocacy of Vivante at the hospital. Vivante is composed of a diverse team of midwives. This is important to me as an African-American woman. It's one of the few midwifery groups in town where I truly felt comfortable. I highly recommend Vivante and Sharon in particular!

My husband and I opted to join their Centering Pregnancy group instead of doing individual appts and I highly recommend it. We were with a group of 5 other couples due around the same time as us that met to discuss pregnancy education and have our regular prenatal visits. This gave us a mini community to celebrate our births and discuss our challenges with. During the prenatal visits, it was clear that every midwife I saw took the time to review my chart ahead of time. They weren't flipping through it while I was in the room. Whenever I brought up an ongoing concern, the midwife doing the exam would pick up where I left off at my last visit. Someone mentioned that the care is not personal -- it might be more personal in the Centering Pregnancy group where you have one midwife who teaches the whole course and a couple others who will step in occasionally. But honestly, the midwives here are all incredible. Every one I interacted with had a different vibe and approach, and ultimately, they are all incredibly caring, knowledgeable, and respectful of your decisions. There was one midwife who I didn't click with and she ended up being our delivery midwife during an intense and fast labor that led to an unplanned c section. She held my hands through some of the most difficult moments and gave me strength to keep going. My husband and doula were huge supports but she helped me through my most vulnerable moments. That's just to say -- if you have a prenatal visit with a midwife you're not thrilled with, trust that they know what they are doing and are there to support you through labor and delivery. After having my baby, I wish that I could still have monthly regular visits with the midwives -- they were a huge comfort throughout the entire pregnancy and delivery. I can't recommend them enough.

Selecting a team of midwives in Portland is a real joy, as there are so many highly qualified, empathetic practitioners in this town, but my partner and I ultimately chose to have our pregnancy and birth care with Two Rivers because of Silke, Kim and Caley's beautiful presence, depth of knowledge and full trust in my body as the pregnant and birthing body to know what was needed to bring our child into the world. Prenatal care with these three was wonderful - each of them offered an incredible depth of knowledge to any and all of our questions without pushing us in any decisional direction, and when asked for more information (or even their personal opinions!) they were always straightforward, honest, and non judgmental. I was quite afraid of having to transfer to hospital and that I would not have the home birth I envisioned, and they helped me work through this fear and to realize that they would only transfer if there were tools we absolutely needed to make use of at the hospital that we did not have at home, and that they would do that transfer not upon emerging crisis but when things were looking necessary - to minimize the interventions that could be prescribed. My partner and I trusted them fully to know where that line was and we do not regret our decision at all. We also just loved hanging out with them during our sessions, a good sign if there ever was one. Their care throughout my pregnancy was absolutely the best possible. My birth itself was long (about 30 hours), slow and grueling, but also the most beautiful and magical experience I could have had. Silke, Kim and Caley held the space for me to labor in with such patience, trust and grace, even through their own exhaustion. My partner and my mom were my main birthing partners, but the midwives were there throughout encouraging me when I needed it, intervening when it was appropriate, gently guiding me through the absolute hardest thing I've ever done with a presence and availability of emotion that I cannot have imagined. At hour 27 of labor and hour 3 of pushing there was talk of a hospital transfer, but instead of pushing one way or another they gave me the chance to fully focus, put all my might behind birthing our babe, and successfully give birth vaginally at home without any medication within the next few hours. I value their care and involvement in this birth more than I can possibly express. We are now in the postnatal care phase of working with Two Rivers, and the experience continues to be so sweet, nourishing, and deep. I truly love all three of these midwives and if I ever decide to go for pregnancy number two we will certainly choose Two Rivers again!
