Well now. I've been back to Sandinistas plenty since my last penning, and I have to admit, in all…read morethat time I'd only back for drinkies. Excellent, raucous, rambunctious, drinkies. The kind where you probably tried to dance on a table, the kind where you definitely felt as though your neck was broken the next day from head banging, the kind where you almost certainly meet a squadron on new best friends because you're having that good a time. (And it's as much to do with the awesome clientele, as the drunkenness, I can tell you.) So, yes. Go to Sandinista for drinks. I know, it's always busy on a weekend. But once you get in there you'll have an amazing time, I'm certain of it. The music policy includes all the classics, something to suit most tastes, without venturing down the processed pop route in any shape or form. They also have regular live music, I believe, which is also commendable. However, you mightn't have noticed, they also serve food. What's that? Yes. Where have you been?! (That question is mostly directed at my own foolish self.) They serve the most excellent tapas. Of course, you can go down the route of fajitas, and such like, but on this occasion I wanted a range of foods to stuff. Oh my word. So, firstly, a special mention must be made of the mushrooms in peppercorn sauce. They were absolutely flipping divine - perfectly cooked, soaked in flavour, and the sauce was out of this world. The meatballs were also fabulous, with a delicious tomato sauce, and the garlic bread was beautiful. The crispy pork belly was wonderful, and came with an amazing apricot (?) compote (?!). The patatas were also addictively tasty, especially with melted cheese and spring onion. Of course, the service was fantastic, as ever, but the discovery that there's yet another place to eat fantastically made, freshly cooked, delicious bites is the thing I'll be shouting about for the moment. Dishes come in around £4, which makes it incredibly affordable to try a few different things, and perhaps even splash out on one of their yummy cocktails. Of course, there's the danger that you'd go for tea and not quite make it out until 4am, but hey -it wouldn't be such a bad thing would it? In fact, top idea Batman, Sherlock and Brian Cox, you geniuses. Even the door signage says, "You can check out any time you like but you can never leave." Of course, I'm thinking The Eagles must have been to Leeds. And, given half the chance, I'd say this to be true. I checked-in, but my mind clearly hasn't left them yet. Nom.

They also have an awesome menu so you could pop in for your dinner! In fact you should do that, yes you! Sandis weekend nights have music for everyone but none of it is cheesy ,this always seems to make for a lovely crowd of people. Weekdays are nice and chilled. They normally have a few bands on a Wednesday night and they're always good. Sandis seem to have a good vetting system! Sandinista is awesome i recommend going there everyday

Whilst the surroundings of the arcade may have faded during the 21 years that the cafe has been in business, the honesty and wholesome quality of the food remains consistent. I have frequented Roots and Fruits on many occasions, usually on an overcast day, accompanied with a good book. It is the perfect place to lose yourself for a couple of hours, away from the frenetic speed of the city centre. Although the decor has aged slightly, this somehow adds character to the ambiance. Their rich, flavourful soups are perfect on a gloomy day. My favourite dish from the cafe is the falafel kebab, served warm with salad, raita and pitta breads, it is absolutely delicious. After eating, I often wile away the rest of the afternoon with a Darjeeling tea and a moist slice of cake. Who says procrastination has to be dull. A well-used haunt for dedicated vegetarians and fans of meat-free cooking, long may Roots and Fruits continue.

Vegan heaven! A real health food cafe where everything tastes amazing!!…read more Been here a couple of times whilst in Leeds and absolutely love the vibe, staff are always friendly, smiley and ready to help. This time we came however we had to sit outside, the cafe as tables had been booked inside (the people who booked it were 25 mins late and they still kept the table) quite irritating for us but at least they give you ages if you're late! It wasn't IDEAL sitting outside, but actually turned out to be quite nice as loads of people were walking past in fancy dress (we visited on Halloween) so got some really interesting people watching in! The waiter came over and took our order (after we'd deliberated for ages) I had the mandarin jigger and others ordered hot drinks etc. Everything was bought quickly and efficiently, our waiter was so lovely when we took ages to decide our food too! I eventually decided on the nachos, complete with salsa, coconut sour cream (!!!!) and jalepenos! All of it was amazing and so tasty!! I definitely didn't expect the coconut sour cream (vegan of course) to taste so good but it was great! The vegan cheese on top was also great and generally really tasty while also feeling you were being (quite) healthy! After much more deliberation we chose the chocolate cheesecake (all vegan) with a desiccated coconut base- different but very delicious! I have to give this place 5 stars, its ethical, friendly and everything I aspire to in life- really makes you think twice about what you're eating and how you're eating it! A real eco hub for anyone interested in conserving our planet :) Goes without saying the napkins and loo roll etc is all recycled too :)

With five hungry Yelpers in tow, we got a seat in the upstairs bit, and I was instantly endeared by the ambiance, decor and service. Everyone was all smiles, the restaurant is pleasantly done out without being over the top if you want to go casual, and it had plenty of happy diners enjoying the place when we came in. Pretty much all of us opted for the thali, being as it's basically a plate of various exciting dishes, which is always more fun than just having one option! The thali comes with a lassi, sweet or salt, and I'm glad I went sweet. It was delicious, especially with the fennel seeds. The salt wasn't for me (I tried April K's) but it's worth a punt if you're more adventurous. When our food arrived we were discussing ingredients, and so the chap happily chatted with us about each dish, and what ingredients were used, even giving a detailed description of how things are eaten in India - this I loved. I'm a huge fan of learning about other cultures, foods, practices, so it was great to get a picture painted for us before we set to dine. Even more excitingly, we discovered a few dishes were brand new, though don't ask me which ones as I can't remember! In any case, we felt very special. Each of the dishes were a delight on the taste buds, and exciting in their own rights, as well as mixed together. I am a meat eater, but I barely noticed its absence. I also tried the chai tea, which was magnificent, and the pudding that comes with the thali really deserves a mention. It's super sweet and delectable, but sadly I only had room for half of it! In any case, it's a beautiful place, and I'm looking for an excuse to return. Delicious food, paired with such a wonderful and personable service, in ambient surrounds makes for one delightful evening out. I highly recommend!

Hansas is an old Leeds institution, and you can tell why it's stood the test of time. 5 minutes out of Leeds centre (although just over the ring road), it's a little bit set apart from most restaurants, but it's totally worth the walk. The menu is varied, although all vegetarian, and everything I've ever tried has been absolutely beautiful. Everything is reasonably priced, and if there's a group of you they do 'banquet meals' which are a great way to try lots of different dishes. My favourite dish by far is the chilli paneer - devilishly hot and full of flavour. We love Hansas so much we had it for Christmas dinner last year. One word of warning - the food tends to be *very* spicy. If you like it a bit milder, it might be worth asking when you order. Or just order a delicious lassi to go with your meal.

There were 14 in our group and everyone raved about not just the food, but the service & how attentive (without being overbearing) the team of staff were. As there was a few of us we went for a set menu option for popadoms, mixed starter, 3 mains to share between 4 with rice & nan bread... the quality of the food was brilliant, with the meats cooked to perfection and the lamb had that melt in the mouth effect. It's so difficult to decide which curry venue to visit in Leeds, but this one will definitely be right there on the list!

So, one Saturday night, we wandered up to Briggate pour manger. The window display in AM Kitchen and Bar is rather ostentatious, with over sized bottles of Grey Goose and the like (t'were they real, and full...!). The intererior of the Restaurant is lovely. The bar area, with the clocks and the beautiful staircase remains from the Georgetown days. However, its now all painted grey. Which is fine. The waiting staff are all very friendly; they can't do enough and are very attentive. Upon sitting down, we chose our Vino - a tasty sauvignon blanc - which was delicious but a little on the pricey side, we thought. I had tikka paneer for my starter. The paneer was cooked perfectly, however, the batter could have REALLY done with some more seasoning. More salt, more pepper, more spice, more a lot-of-things. Plus, it was served with some salad which was more of an after-thought than anything else. But ah well, I thought, hopefully the mains will be more pleasing. And they were. I had a chicken makhani. It was amazing. Just super. It was mild, but delicately spiced, with tender chicken and loveliness. Wifey had a spinachy paneer dish. It was gorgeous, so rich, warm, and raisiny (do they put raisins in spinach paneer?) but a bit too spicy for me - I am a massive spice-wimp. We had a peshwari naan and basmati rice to accompany our mains. Both were very nice. I was too full for a dessert, but the staff were only too happy to make me a cocktail of my choice. I chose a sex on the beach, because firstly, it is my (shameful) favourite, but also, I know it's fairly easy to make. If you want anything more complicated than some peach schnapps, cranberry juice and vodka then there is a possibility that you *might* be disappointed as they don't advertise themselves as cocktail connaisseurs. In conclusion, we had a lovely time. The food and drink is a bit pricey, but you should definitely give it a go. Plus, the toilets are nice.
