They do beer cocktails yay. We tried a tequila based sangria style one and a beery take on a Moscow mule. Both were really tasty. They have a huge range of draft and craft beers and do bottles with chaser shots a personal fav was the Aussie bundy rum with my beer! Bar snacks are on to keep you going but not full meals yet, though you could always head up to Steak if you're peckish.

In addition to a decent selection of craft beers, there's a hefty cocktail menu. I tried the Ginger Tom Collins & it hit the spot. Just the right amount of ginger to pack a punch but not enough to be overpowering. The OH had a pint of draft beer & seemed happy enough. The low ceiling means it gets noisy even if it's not packed. There was a stag do, 2 birthday parties and hen group as well as some other folks. It was only just possible to hold a convo at normal volume & be heard. There's a decent sized courtyard out the back too but it was too wet & cold to try it out. I'd definitely visit again but maybe on a week night when it might be a little less noisy.

It does have very good food, and some great deals on offer. My particular favourite is the breakfast special, which I in fact eat WAY too often. It doesn't help that its so very close to my academic building and the hour break we have between Latin and Palaeography suits perfectly for a late breakfast, or as I like to call it, 'Elevensies'. Plus, what you get is just too great. They have 2 breakfast deals, one is the standard breakfast special, the other the 'big breakfast'. The breakfast special USED to come with an egg, toast, a sausage, a rasher of bacon, mushrooms, tomato and hash browns, all for £3.50. AND it included a drink! But since they re-did the menu its now something like the egg, bacon, sausage, toast, tomato, no mushrooms and instead of hashbrowns you get a tattie scone and haggis. And they lowered the price. But in exchange, you don't get a free drink anymore, so you're essentially paying the same price anyway. Tricksy hobbitses. They have plenty of other fare on their menu. When a friend came to visit me in November, we got the sampler platter which was pretty good. But overall, I would stick to the breakfasts. That is what they do really well. They have all sorts of other things on offer like soups and pizza and fish and chips, but honestly, this place is probably best described as a bar that serves really good breakfasts. And now, for something completely different, I'm going to stop rambling and talk about the bar. The Rule seems to be a pretty decent social spot. Whenever I go, they seem to be doing decent business and be pretty well full. They have a full bar, with a pretty good selection. I mostly drink beer, which they have quite a few varieties of for decent prices, and I'm told they do really good cocktails and have lots of drinks specials and such. But, as I'm a 'beer-and-shots' man myself, I wouldn't know from personal experience. Socially, pretty good crowds, usually. At least during term time, pretty active with students. I usually wind up here at some point during my nights out, because its a very good bar with a nice scene and decent prices. Plus, they actually play decent music. Also, if you aren't here on a night out, but want a place with a bunch of big screen tellys and a large group of dedicated sports fans to watch sports with, the Rule is your spot. MASSIVE tellys. And just about every Saturday (or whenever matches are on, really) there are plenty of people there to watch with you. Especially if its football (not the American one) or Rugby. Oh yeah, and on Mondays at 20.30 there is a pub quiz with free pizza for all teams and cash prizes. I've never gotten a team together in time to actually participate, but I hear its great. The hall itself is massive split into two big halls - one for Pool the Other for snooker. The atmosphere is very relaxed the staff are super friendly and they have a large selection of drinks available. All of this I really never expected. One game of pool will cost you 50p and a beer can cost you as little as 2quid! There is two massive screens at the from front of the Hall and smaller screens round the tables ideal for watching sport. A membership will cost you £15 but that's for the year. But I believe you can pay an entry fee if you don't want to commit! I really like it here and would happily spend a couple of hours having a few beers and playing some pool!

What sets it apart from the other pubs in Cowdenbeath is the quality of its food. The landlord and landlady are a charming couple who took on a pub with a bit of a hairy reputation and have worked tirelessly on a continual programme of improvement. Like most small town pubs there may be the odd moment where someone steps over the line but the landlord is very quick to resolve any issues. If you want flowers on the tables and Jeeves talking about Marx and nuclear fission then try the Rotary Club or similar. If you walk into the Dunvegan and there's football on the tv, a bunch of ex miners arguing about something, three lassies in insufficient clothing tottering about and a fairly respectable couple sitting at the end of the bar, you'll know that me and my wife are out! Cowdenbeath is an ex colliery town, and the clientele in the local bars reflect that. I'd sooner spend a night there with genuine people than waste a fortune on some jumped up city centre 'club' full of poseurs and lying wannabee inadequates. Oh, and by the way, Guessingme you twisted freak. I am not out of work, I am very much in work, very well paid, highly educated, intelligent and articulate.
