Nobody wants to get a gum graft, but if you need one then this is absolutely the place to get it. The place is clean and organized, the staff nice and professional, the Dr (Trevor Fujinaka) friendly and very skilled. This is a scary procedure especially if it's your first time and the Dr/staff take the time to explain the process and answer any questions. They make sure you know that you're not alone in recovery and they are available for help. They care. I've just finished my post-procedure follow-up appointment and am so happy this place was recommended to me. I've got a good result and some gnarly souvenir pics. Dr. Trevor (that's what I call him to distinguish him from his dad, who is also a perio), is great, but I'm really writing this review for his staff. They LITERALLY held my hand through some rough dental experiences and for that I am so grateful. When I called their office, crying and slobbering like an idiot, their staff was all compassion and took care of me right away. I call this out because I go to so many doctors whose staff are indifferent and even borderline hostile, that this excellent kind of treatment really struck me. Fujinaka does not explain procedures. They never call after procedures to check on healing. The office staff is unresponsive and rude.

Who loves going to their dentist/periodontist? The feeling of low volt electricity in your sensitive gums (as they use that high powered water thingie), the scraping between ur teeth that sounds like nails down a chalkboard, the probing of your gums (and relaying 3, 3, 3s!) and the sound of a drill while your teeth are getting polished...yikes....Well, I guess I do? I must be a glutton for punishment...a necessary evil I suppose and I opt to do it on a regular basis...well, kudos to my regular, dental hygienist for performing this 4 month ritual (hey I have a good dental plan!)...despite the unpleasantries of my hour stay, Karen is gentle, calming and a true professional! Other than the reminders (more embarrassment) of floss, floss, floss it's not that bad! Dr Fujinaka always checks on his patients - friendly, down to earth and just a great guy and awesome periodontist...all I can say is he better not retire any time soon or I'll have to cram in some 'not needed' gum grafting for just in case to ensure it's done right! Highly recommend if your regular dentist tells you you have excellent teeth (2 fillings my whole life!) but there's concern with your gums...sigh. After seeing Dr Fujinaka for almost 5 yrs now I feel confident my gums are healthy! Yeah it could be better (need those 1s and 2s when they probe my gums) but much improved if I just flossed more regularly. I have never had a more pleasant experience when it comes down to anything teeth related. Both Dr Fujinaka Sr and Jr make you feel so comfortable and have answers to all your questions. I had a deep clean, it was pain free, and enjoyed listening to Dr Fujinaka's stories. I was so impressed on how one Dr went over my dental history with the other. I didn't have to repeat myself like I normally would at any other place. The office is clean and inviting. My first initial appointment took about 2 months, but well worth the wait. I am currently in the process of getting a dental implant from Dr. Fujinaka. Dental implants typically take around 9 months, and require several oral surgeries. First off, I have the highest respect for his ability as a periodontist. He did the best he could to make me comfortable during my initial surgery, and even called me that night to see how I was doing. Also, he is very pleasant as are his office staff. I would have given Dr. Fujinaka a 5 star rating but during my last visit with him I felt pressured to consider a newer implant technique he learned about at a recent dental conference, which could reduce the time frame from 9 months to 6 months. He showed me a colored brochure about the new procedure, and said the radiation I would receive from the X-rays would be about the same as that in an airplane flight from San Francisco to LA. Radiation is cumulative and I do not want unnecessary exposure to it, so that in of itself was enough for me to rule out the new procedure. Although Dr. Fujinaka has years of experience performing successful dental implants using the tried and true implant procedure I did not get the impression that he had much experience, if any, with using the new procedure on his patients. Although he said it was up to me to decide which procedure to use I felt that he was anxious to "sell" me on the new one. I am not saying that was his intent but just that is how I felt. I still have a great deal of respect for Dr. Fujinaka and highly recommend using him for any periodontal work you may need. Also, he recommended a very fine dentist in Alameda, Dr. Rouleau, who I now use. read more

I was shocked in a good way! When the Dr. came in I didn't expect to see a young 20 something doctor. Dr. Fujinaka actually took the time to get to know me on a personal level..., I figured that all young doctors had no bed side manner but I was wrong, lol. Further more, he really did an excellent job of showing me what is wrong with my gums and teeth, verbally, but also showing me with a hand held model of the mouth as well as using the computer. Had to go here for some specialty work on my gums and was referred by my regular dentist of over 30 years. And all I can say is wow! This was the nicest, most courteous, prompt, efficient and competent dental office I've ever visited. By the end of my appointment I was asking whether they could become my regular dentist despite the fact that they're specialists. Dr. Fujinaka took ample time not only to chat and get to know me a bit but also to explain in detail what my dental options were. I was referred over to Dr. Fujnaka for gum grafts a few years ago. He seemed like a decent person and the staff was kind and friendly. However, I was put off by the hard-sell approach. The moment the $200 initial exam was completed, I was shepherded into a 'finance' powwow to talk about how to pay for all the recommended work. Small detail: No one ever asked whether I was consenting to the plan! I kept demurring and said I'd think about it. Here's the weirdest part. About a year ago, out of the blue, I received a threatening letter from this place saying I needed to sign a form to release the doctor from responsibility if I lost my teeth by not getting his work! It didn't even allow that I might have found another office I liked better. Ironically, without the pressure, I might have stayed and used his services. Instead I fled to a san francisco office that was more my speed. At the office of Dr. Javadi I received fantastic gum reconstruction without that used-car finance-feeling. read more

Highly recommended! I was dreading having any peridontal work - my dentist sent me to see Dr. Fujinaka because I needed two gum grafts. First of all, their office is lovely, from a gorgeous flower arrangement at the front, to the view of the japanese garden from some of the treatment rooms. Second, everyone that works there is friendly and professional, and they run on time! They also offer early morning appointments so you don't have to miss work. My gum graft experiences were remarkably pleasant and they do excellent follow up visits. He explains everything and is very precise. He obviously loves what he does, and it shows. read more

Had a great experience with both of the Dr. Fujinakas, Glenn and Trevor. Today Dr. Glenn used a technique and a tool to numb my gums and teeth that I'd never heard of before, using vibration to make the injection less painful. It worked! His manner made me feel very comfortable, and as relaxed, I supposed, as is possible in that situation. My experience with Dr. Fujinaka and his assistant, Samantha, was beyond wonderful! Like many, I was a little anxious about having gum surgery today, but from the moment I walked into the office and was greeted by the front desk person, Ali, I was made to feel very comfortable. Dr. Fujinaka's warm and calm demeanor immediately put me at ease as he reviewed the treatment I was about to receive. The dental chair was insanely comfortable, and they offered me a warm blanket and an endless supply of music to listen to during the procedure. I've been a patient of Dr. Fujinaka for years and can't say enough nice things about him and his staff. The office atmosphere is both tranquil and efficient with state of the art equipment. You can tell that everyone takes pride in their work and treats each patient cordially and efficiently. Yes...the office and staff are very nice ect....but they forgot to call me before my appointment and tell me Dr. Fujinaka was out with a bad back. So, after driving 1/2 hour from Marin I find out in the chair that another dentist would see me. It cost me $180.00 just to be looked at by another doctor! I asked them if I could come back for free and have Dr. Fujinaka look at my gums, since that was the doctor I signed up with and they said it would cost me another $130.00! I have been a patient of Dr. Fujinaka for many years. He has done many soft tissue grafts for me, and they all have been very successful. I have a full mouth of teeth at my age (71 years) despite having had gingivitis since childhood. He is very patient and considerate toward me, and he lets me pick out the music I want to listen to while he works on me. I focus on the music and then, even if it is a long procedure, I tolerate it well and have a speedy recovery. He also is very good at referring his patients to other dentists. When I needed a root canal, he sent me right away to another dentist who did that kind of work. Then after I had that done, he performed the soft tissue graft on that tooth. His staff is good, too. The finance person is efficient and always consults correctly with my dental insurance company, and his hygienist uses the latest techniques to clean his patients' teeth.
