Great place with great views!…read more Pop "Woodstock Tower" into Google Maps, and it will take you to the right spot (Apple Maps only took me to the trailhead a distance away). This will put you near a little overlook off the dirt road or if you keep going, a small gravel parking lot. Be prepared to drive on dirt and gravel roads for over a mile to get here; you are going the right way! This end of the trail has a clearly marked sign saying it is the Woodstock Tower. From either of those parking lots it's only about ¼ mile walk to get to the tower. The path varies from rocky to flat dirt. Loads of hickory nuts line the path. You could also come from the other end of the trail, which is over a mile away in the other direction. The climb up is steep but manageable (I'd recommend being more careful descending!) with metal steps. Considering she's still standing 90 years after her construction, I'd say the tower is stable. Hats off to the Civilian Conservation Corps for building this lasting landmark! The views from the top are great and worth the short walk and short climb. I met a local man at the top who shoots a lot of videos from up there. He did warn that sometimes there are black bears in the area; I never saw one my whole time, but just keep alert. It was a little cold on the mid-October day we were there and the top of the mountain did mean lots of cross wind, so dress appropriately. Unless you're weird about heights (apologies to my wife; thanks for walking out to it with us, Baby), this is a worthwhile visit. Definitely recommend!

The entire event was extremely well organized, starting with the shuttle bus that took visitors to and from Tyler Elementary throughout the day. The parade began promptly at 10 AM and was well organized. Great assortment of vendors along the parade route and a fun Kidzone was set up in the park. It was an overall wonderful, fun-filled day for all.

Haymarket Day 2011 was held today - Saturday, September 17, 2011! (It's still going on as I type…read morethis). As in years past - the main route through Old Town Haymarket was closed to vehicular traffic for the all day event (Route 55/Washington Street). An awesome parade was held (pretty awesome for a small town!). Started the day with a nice cup of steaming hot delicious coffee from Cupcake Heaven, then found a spot along Washington Street to watch the parade and take photos. Lots of entertaining participants in the parade: The Battlefield HS Marching Band, cheerleaders, several local dance troops, several martial arts groups, the Fairfax County Police motorcycle officers (in precision formations), Cub/Boy Scouts, musical groups, local politicians, church groups, civic groups, local businesses, the Geico Gecko, the Chik-fil-A cows, Santa Claus, and a lot more! The parade was considerably longer with more participants than ever. There is also a large vendor area in front of Town Hall and down Washington Street with lots of vendors of all sorts, arts and crafts, games, food and beverages, stages with music, and a lot more! The weather was perfect, cool and overcast, no rain, the place was packed with local residents. It is a great event and it's so wonderful to see so many folks come out with their kids, many brought their dogs, and everyone seemed to be well behaved. I really like the small town atmosphere of Haymarket and the sense of community we have here!

I've always been intrigued by the idea of Farmer's Markets - but I've never taken the time to visit one - which is strange given my interest in cooking. Well I had decided earlier this week that this Sunday was going to be a gorgeous day out - and that I would trek out west to check it out (The Plains is not that far from Haymarket). I pulled in and there were lots of folks checking out and buying the fresh farm produced produce - lots of vegetables and fruits. Most were under small tent or canopies - I was just about to leave when I noticed there was more to see! A whole inside area with vendors of all sorts! So I wandered through - there were all sorts of delicious organic and homemade goods to be had - salsa, guacamole, baked goods, jellies, jams, honey, maple syrup, arts and crafts - I was very impressed! I tasted a Virginia made Beef Pepper snack, beef jerky, pickles, salsa, and guacamole. I ended up buying a couple of the Beef Pepper sticks - 2 for $3.00. I also bought two tomatoes and a small container of fresh jalapeno peppers. I was sorely tempted to buy several pints of the fresh black raspberries - but that can wait until next time!

Ride wristbands (for unlimited rides) cost $35 (including the $2 "activation fee") and also charges a 3.5% fee for paying with debit/credit card (which makes it about $37.50 per person), and then the advertised pony rides, camel rides, and monster truck rides cost extra ($10 each per rider, cash only). Almost all of the games are $10 min. to play (some are $5 but give 1 chance while $10 gives 3 chances), and as expected, the food and drinks are quite pricey and each stand charges $1 or $2 extra transaction fee for using a debit/credit card. If you're sensing a trend, the biggest tip (if you still want to attend and ride the rides for $52.50 per person) is to bring plenty of cash so you can avoid all the extra transaction fees for everything you'll want to buy while there (as well as any of the "extra" rides that charge separately). So it looks and sounds cool based on the story on their web site. But would it actually deliver the scary goods? I went last Friday night on my way home from Shenandoah National Park. I arrived about 6:40 pm and bought my ticket - $10.00. The first hour The Un-lucky Inn conducts a non-scary version for little kids to go through. While you are waiting, a couple of vendors are selling food - one has hot chocolate and coffee for sale, the other is Red Hot and Blue - selling pulled pork and chicken sandwiches - just in time for you to eat them, then enter the Un-lucky Inn - and lose your lunch! :-) At 7:30 pm, they begin the real horror. Groups are sent though with a couple of guides, no more than eight people per group. You cross the yard and enter the Un-lucky Inn. I am not going to give away the scary details as I want others to be properly frightened and terrified. Suffice to say, this is to date the best and scariest haunted house I have experienced as an adult. Go, go to The Un-lucky Inn. You may check in, but you will never check out! Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Its a timing and tiring process but we did it, cause we enjoy scaring people. :) The Un-Lucky Inn is filled with any possible scary effects that would make a grown man cry, or #2 himself. Gladly tho, there are porta pottys near, so if you gotta go befor and after, its there for you. That is not a lie, I had to clean up my station plenty of times. Yes, there may be a line to wait in, but doesnt all haunted houses? At least there is a barrel of fire to keep you warm before your haunt, and great food and drinks for sale. Have kids too scared to go thru the regular haunt, there is a scare free tour for the little ones or the faint at heart ones.. Its a great haunted house to go to. No only will we give you the heeby jeebies, but the real owner of this house. Mr. Lucky himself. He still resides in this house, i swear.
