Whoever wrote in other reviews that the Glengarriff Park Hotel was "luxurious" either went to *another* Glengarriff Park Hotel or is the owner of the hotel trying to make it sound better than it is.
Okay, to be direct:
on the Plus side:
-- the room was clean
-- the bathroom was pretty clean (B+)
-- there was enough hot water, if you were patient and if you used the tub rather than the shower
on the Minus side:
-- no one is on duty at the desk after 10 in the evening, so if you're out and someone wants to call and leave a message, forget it. there's no one to take the message and no message machine on the phone. And if you need help of some sort after 10 in the evening -- something broken in the room, a question about your bill, anything -- forget it.
there is simply No One There;
-- the restaurant // room where you eat breakfast is disgusting. on the monday of the august bank holiday weekend, it had not been cleaned from the previous day, and the floor was filthy with crumbs, crisps, everything. on both mornings (sunday and monday) there were flies -- too many -- flying around the dining room, presumably attracted by all the food on the floor and on the tops of the tables that had not been cleaned
-- the orange juice was awful, and the sugar was dirty
-- oh and more about messages: if you're out and there *is* someone at reception, and you get a call, they will simply route the call to your room telephone, where of course there is no message machine, so if the caller wants to leave a message, he or she will have to make a second call to reach the desk. the call does not automatically go back to the desk
-- the hallways stink and are very hot
-- there are no directions in the room about what to do in case of fire. in every other irish hotel and B&B that i've been to, and that must be 20 or 30 at least over the years, fire safety directions are affixed to the door -- Not Here.
-- we also stayed in a hotel in dublin, very nice, and a B& B in Dingle, terrific -- and both of those cost ** less** per night than the Glengarriff Park Hotel. It was seriously over-priced, but then, if they can get people to pay that much, why not charge them?
So stay at the Glengarriff Park Hotel if there's no room at the Eccles hotel or at Casey's.
There are many worse places to stay. read more
