Mackie Pharmacy

I was quickly greeted by a member of staff who got my signature and disappeared to get my prescription. I normally would leave and come back but it seemed kind of quiet so I just had a wee look around. The chemist stocks the usual stuff - makeup (Rimmel) and vitamins, as well as more unusual things like magnetic bracelets (pretty sure these do absolutely nothing) and some pretty nice jewellery. My name was called after a few minutes and the pharmacist gave me some good advice about taking the antibiotics ("have them with a sandwich or biscuit") which I thought was really cute and added a nice wee touch to the whole thing. While I can't see I'd go out of my way to return here, I would definitely pop back while in Giffnock.

I pride myself on being an Independent Pharmacy with both community and employee wellbeing at heart. I graduated with honours from Strathclyde University in 1994. I acquired my first pharmacy in Shawlands in 1999 where I worked over 70 hours a week for 5 years and learned the pivotal roll my pharmacy could play in improving the healthcare of the local community. I have since extended that ethos to my new pharmacies and can regularly be found working on the shop floor ensuring we are delivering top quality healthcare to our local communities. We also practice what we preach and consider our employee wellbeing as important as our communities. We are a Glasgow Living Wage employer and ensure all our employees receive a fair level of pay for their hard work. Furthermore, we encourage our staff to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and provide them with free gym membership.

Although the service is brisk and the atmosphere professional rather than friendly, Docherty…read moreChemists offer the usual range of products as well as a very efficient pharmacy: there is no endless waiting around for the prescription, and the white-jacketed pharmacists work quickly to find those pills. Like many other chemists, it does struggle a little to match the prices of the supermarkets for the products that used to be their income- hair gel, shampoo and the like, but this shop does have an interesting range of fragrances and just about enough home first aid material to make it a one-stop shop. Being quite a serious store- the adverts on the counter are for diabetic products, a subject that the staff seem to know very well- it lacks many of the alternative remedies that are so common. Apart from it being my local chemist, it is a good place to pick up anything medical, as they know their stuff and work rapidly.

This is another fairly large pharmacy which is local and situated just on Clarkston Road. It sells…read morea good selection of remedies, medical supplies as well as a surprisingly big range of haircare products and some cosmetics. The space is utilised through a good layout and clear displaying of all their bits and bobs. This is further aided by the extremely pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable staff. I've been in more than a few times, and each time there were was an adequate number of staff which meant to you got quick, thorough and very professional service. Although, I usually only brought aspirin, strepsils and the like from here for those hungover/flu filled days when I was working half days as a Sales Administrator further along the road. This allowed me a bit of a walk home and on the way I would pop in to pick up some comfort food from Sainsbury's (or Somerfield or whatever it was then...) as well as some nonprescription drugs from this place. Ideal and always worked its magic in helping me feel that little bit better.

I will never forget the time I was so hungover when I woke up I actually thought I was dying. On top of this I had the flu, it was awful, thinking about it now makes me feel queasy! Luckily this pharmacy was only a stones throw from where I lived at the time, so I ran down and bought everything and anything to ease the pain, walking home I felt like a walking medicine cabinet. The Vicks, paracetamol, Halls Soothers, cooling patches, herbal tea and tissues helped my slightly self-inflicted suffering and I am ever grateful to this pharmacy! That was about two years ago, after one of those nights where you say "I'm never drinking again..." and surprisingly I don't think I did for about a year afterwards and even now when I can still remember how bad I felt. Hurrah for Merrylee Pharmacy!

Rowlands Pharmacy

I just needed a prescription so didn't see the point in trekking to The Avenue. Rowlands is a small pharmacy and it was totally dead inside on a Monday at lunch time (which was good for me as they did my prescription in 5 minutes). I find the range of stuff stocked here to be really strange and I'd guess that 1/3rd of the shelves are weight loss products which I find a bit off-putting in a pharmacy. Aside from that, they stock the basics that you'd expect a pharmacy too, but keep in mind that it's small and you might be better off going to Boots or Superdrug at The Avenue. In the past, my husband came here to get a prescription and he had to get that at Boots as they didn't stock what he was after. So it can be hit or miss.

I simply don't want to wait over a week for my prescription due to their "new processes". The lady with the dark hair on the front counter is lovely, however the Saturday girl and locum I encountered last week were patronising and unhelpful. I won't be back and as a pharmacist I'm embarrassed for this pharmacy.

I've been here a couple of times as I have yearly health check ups with Vitality Health which they offer at this pharmacy. Firstly, the pharmacy side of things. As I said, it's very small - you can probably only really fit 5-6 customers in the shop at a time. They have a dispensing counter and a couple of chairs to wait for your prescription. On the shelves is exactly what you'd expect to find in a chemist but keep in mind they won't have a massive selection. I've had two health checks now and the first one came back with the wrong information, but it wasn't picked up by the pharmacist or the assistant doing the health check. (I was told my BMI was 18,000 because they made a typo entering my height). This time there was another small mistake with the information I was told as I was leaving which I only noticed when I got home later that night to look at the paperwork. (I was told I have low cholesterol when it's actually totally fine). So I would say be careful with these checks as you don't want to leave making changes to your diet when you don't have to! The health check takes about 15-20 minutes and includes a non-smoking verification, blood glucose levels, BMI and cholesterol.

I discovered a rather interesting range of male hair removal products, which I then used to remove unwanted follicles to great social success. Like many pharmacies, they have space to stock the odd things that the supermarkets don't carry- I am not just talking about those cool painkillers that they have to get the pharmacist to approve, but household goods and perfumes that you won't find anywhere else. When I visited this store, I spent rather a long time browsing these items and thinking about how my daily cleansing routines could be spruced up. I'd rather shop here than in those special men's stores: this seems far cheaper and less pretentious.
