The hotel is a 3-minute drive to Ballater (a lovely bakery, and two wonderful restaurants we tried are located there). It is great in terms of location to the town and other things to do: Royal Lochnagar Distillery, and Balmoral. The only downside was the shower was fairly tight, but common in the UK.

The bathroom was the same. Great water pressure in the shower-- only critique is that I wished there was more airflow in the bathroom. I had to keep my shower door slightly cracked open because I couldn't breathe with the steam building up. Food was excellent, dinner and breakfast! Nice bar with a good selection of beer on tap. The wild venison with currant sauce was delicious! I'm inspired to recreate this dish at home, as my husband and I do eat a lot of game. The Balmoral chicken was also very good. The sticky toffee pudding was out of this world! Breakfast was also fantastic. You won't go hungry here, and their Scottish breakfast is one of the best around. Wish we could've stayed here longer. It was a great value.

(I know the area quite well anyway, but you know what I mean!) The nightclub attached to the hotel was good for later in the evening, and the meal we had in the restaurant before hitting the town was excellent, cooked to perfection and not too filling. Managed all three courses easily. The rooms were 1st Class, plenty of nice towels to pinch (only kidding!) and felt really well looked after. Good on them for running such a tight ship, it was an excellent stay!

We arrived late after driving all day and their restaurant had already closed. The only restaurant nearby proved to be the worst establishment we encountered in our trip (separate review will follow). The rooms were a bit outdated and rather small. The hotel has a certain charm: they still operate the old historical which is a jewel in itself but lacks some of the amenities that one would expect, especially at this price range. The complimentary breakfast was good. We had so many expectations for our stay at this historical hotel but while we had a pleasant stay, our experience did not feel as special as this place would have warranted.
