However, accepting that it was time for her to move into another home environment was really difficult. I was hysterical and cried to Tamara. She showed me such care and compassion that day, I knew this was the best place possible for my Mom. To this day, she remains sincere, caring and compassionate, to me and all the residents every day. Mom moved into Twin Cedars December 1, 2017. I notice a lot when I visit my Mom. I see how the residents look, how they smell, I see how the staff members treat the residents and very important - I see how the residents react to the staff. I have said it before and I still say it today, I am so thankful they have a great staff. I know the heart of Twin Cedars begins with the owner, she really makes TC the wonderful place, a home. The staff is a direct reflection of that. They work very hard, I see it myself. They are so very good to the residents and joke and play with them. The whole feeling of TC is a very warm, caring and family environment. The staff has unending patience with me, my questions and some slightly over the top requests. On a great note, because of the care that my Mom has received over the last 10 months, I feel less protective and less worried as I know she is safe. I visit once a week and always feel welcome and happy there. I am thankful to all at Twin Cedars. The house (a beautiful ranch style, very large home) is always neat, clean, odor free and comfortable. The food that is served is well balanced and very tasty. There is a nice variety and they are always willing to help and offer choices. The activities and enrichment programs seem endless. You can tell that the people working there are doing with love in their hearts. Not only do they take care of your loved one, they help you adjust to the new life you will have. They have absolutely risen to the challenge and taken the utmost precautions. In times like these it is more important than ever that the staff do their very best, and I know they give 110% here. He spent most of his life living at home, but when he required more care we looked around for a place that could take care of his needs. Sadly, the place we picked was unable to take care of him after just 4 months, because of aggressive behaviors that are actually not atypical in the disease process. After 2 traumatic hospitalization in psych facilities (which are just not equipped for this population), we found Arden Courts of Wayne. It was such an unbelievable find!!! From the moment that we contacted them they showed so much care, respect and compassion not only for my dad but for my mother and the rest of our family as well. The staff took the time to get to know us- and although they were not fortunate enough to meet my "real" dad, they made sure to ask about who he was and offered him the best possible care. Staff at Arden Court are superb, from the top down (or from the bottom up??). The aides that take care of the daily needs of the residents really seem to love what they do, and they do it well. They also seem to get the respect and support from the "higher-ups" including nurses, director of nursing, etc. My dad was always well-dressed and clean-shaven- 2 things that were very important to my mom. When he started to refuse to eat, they made natural adjustments to his diet and took the time to find the foods he liked and tried to coax him (in such a nurturing way!) to eat. My dad was unable to participate in the regular activity programming at the nursing home, since it was too over stimulating for him. However, he participated in a daily program in a darkened room, with soft music and massage- which was just perfect for him. Sadly, my dad died just 6 weeks after entering Arden Courts of Wayne. But to the last moment, our family could not be more sure that he was in the right place. We were all taken care of to his last day (and even afterwards when we returned to clean out his room). I would not hesitate for an instant when making the difficult decision of placing someone you deeply care for under the care of the staff at Arden Courts of Wayne.

I'm thankful that I placed my wife at Arden Courts in Whippany because she is safer, happier, better cared for and healthier than anything I could have done, on my own. I had to select a facility, as her mother and I could no longer care for her. In most cases it's not possible for one person to take care of an individual 24x7 with an altered sleep/wake cycle. After experiencing the level of care and concern at Arden Courts, Whippany, first hand, I should have placed Louise sooner. I chose Arden Courts, Whippany, for a number of specific reasons, but the primary reason came more from intuition on our visit. The staff of Arden Courts, Whippany is extraordinary. If gold medals were awarded to caretakers for being attentive, kind, addressing all the needs of residents, gently directing them as needed, keeping them safe, ensuring that they had the nutrition they need, being well dressed and groomed, and in general treating residents like family, you'd need sunglasses for all the bling. I suspected the care takers were kind an efficient when we made our initial visit, but I underestimated the magnitude of their ability and caring. On specifics, the facility is on one level. There are no stairs or elevators. The interior design is open and free flowing. The bedrooms are private, and residents and their families are free to decorate as they desire. There is a bathroom in each bedroom, with a sink in both the bathroom and bedroom. There is no leaving the room at night to find a bathroom, and then a return to find your room. The facility is clean and is smells good. All of the staff, not just the cleaning staff, works at constantly maintaining the shine. All of the staff provides assistance to the residents if necessary. No one is left if they need help while a caretaker is called. There are specific areas for lounging, eating and activities. There is a Social Room, which can be made private, where we held my wife's last birthday party with her brothers and sister in attendance. My wife loves the outdoors and walking. We try to walk outside on a daily basis. Inclement weather is the only impediment. The facility is designed to allow residents to walk through the entire residential area, and the gardens that surround three sides of the facility. During nice weather, the doors to the gardens are not secured, and there are lovely places to sit under trees, in the sun, in the gazebo and on the porch to enjoy the trees, flowers and birds. My wife and I frequently walk outside, even when the weather is less than ideal. It allows us to walk outside without ever leaving. There are things that are not obvious during a visit. The activities and activities staff are great, there is excellent entertainment from outside on a regular basis, and fun seasonal activities. The food is good. I don't know how, given the dietary constraints of residents, they make it taste so good. There are occasional barbeques, and grilling afternoons during good weather. There have been a number of dinners for residents and their families in the evening to celebrate holidays. The last, for Valentine's Day was a romantic dinner in the Social room, with dancing afterward. The nursing staff, in association with the medical staff, has done wonders in the care of my wife. The physical condition of all the residents is reported to the nursing staff, who advises the medical staff. A doctor, nurse practitioner, and nutritionist are on premises, on a regular basis. A podiatrist takes care of my wife's feet, a dentist is on call. Everyone works as a gentle, coordinated, attentive team. I would have not been able to provide anything close to the level of medical care Louise receives at Arden Courts, Whippany, if she were in my care. My wife went into care in May of 2017. Soon after that I saw that Arden Courts, Whippany became her home. She request to go back 'home' when she's at relative's houses and becomes tired. The staff and residents have become family to the both of us. I've kept abreast of other facilities in the area as they are built and open, and nothing comes close to the level of care and concern at Arden Courts, Whippany.

It is a home atmosphere. When I realized that I could no longer take of husband at home I had to make the difficult decision of finding a place. I visited several facilities and none compare to Arden Courts. My husband is receiving outstanding care. He has many health issues besides dementia and all of his needs are being met. When I take my husband home for a few hours, he tells me he wants to go "home". That says a lot about his care and I know he is happy and healthy. Most places we visited were decorated in the 80's, dusty and dark, smelled of cheese and had felt really depressing. Enter Brightview Tenafly, and you'll feel like this is a place where people are actually happy. It felt like a well-run hotel. It's super clean, freshly painted, modern with a traditional touch - bright and clean, with plenty of light, and comfortable furniture that could be in a cute little hotel on the coast. The receptionist greeted us with a smile and Ritchie, our principle contact, was genuinely pleased to see us (unlike other homes where we felt like we were a burden to ask for a tour or see the director). Depending on the time of day see residents reading the newspaper, doing Tai Chi or having a drink during happy hour. The most important factor I'd like to stress is that every staff person I meet here is genuinely pleasant and supportive of the residents. We had been looking on and off for a few years in NY, NJ, and CT. We even thought of bringing her back to the UK. It was an emotional process, filled with guilt (why can't I do more?) sadness (why is she going downhill?) and honestly, even a bit of anger (How am I going to decide this? What will I do with all her stuff?). I always felt sick after leaving assisted living homes. They never felt right. However, last spring when she was departing hospital for the 3rd time this year, we knew we had to make a move. It helped that SHE was on board (ok, we had to nudge her a bit!) and also knew it was time to move. We were so glad she had opinions of what she wanted - and didn't want - in her future residence. It helped us narrow our options down. The clincher was that she was able to do a "trial run," stay for one month, and see if she liked it. She was able to move into a beautifully furnished, studio apartment. I didn't find any other facility else that had that choice. It was a fantatic option, as both sides get to see if it's a good fit. After a week we knew. We saw how the staff made sure to know her and her (sometimes slightly annoying (!) requirements that helped her feel heard. She liked that she could get her nails done (often it would be so hard to take her to get her hair, nails and other chores done when she lived at home). She saw movies and began painting classes. She could go to church services. She loved the choices she had for food (it's restaurant style, with plenty of options). I don't often gush about things. It's not the English way. But I've been so impressed; I feel Brightview deserves it. * I must insert here that we were looking for assisted living, not memory care, but I'd wager they have their act together to in that sector as well.
