Ownership of this venue has changed, but it's still a good place for a show. I've been to several concerts since they first opened and the experience is decent. The lines tend to move pretty quickly, both to get through security and into the building as well as at any of the bars inside. I like that the stage is elevated enough to be able to see even from the back. There's an upper mezzanine with seats, as well as a VIP lounge area that includes a private bathroom, bar, and balcony, but the balcony is right next to the smoking balcony on the second level which wouldn't be my preference. Security is ever-present at this venue which I don't mind as they were respectful and not in your face. If you're having a good time but being safe, you're going to be just fine. The bathrooms are upstairs, which I still think is the worst, but they are spacious and I never had to stand in line for the restroom. They were pretty clean as well. I love that they serve snacks! They have bottomless popcorn, soft pretzels, candy, etc. They also have some N/A drink options. Overall I like this venue and look forward to seeing at least a couple shows here each year.

    Main concert stage from balcony

We have been to multiple concerts here and have yet to have a bad experience! No matter what seats you get you will have a great view of the stage.

    Good seats, expensive beer

We have been to a few events here and they are fine. It's a relatively small venue which I appreciate. Even if you were seated in the upper mezzanine, you still have a relatively good view of the stage. What I don't appreciate is that they seem to nickel and dime you for everything here. Want to use the fast lane to get in early? that's an extra fee. Want to have access to the lounge? That's an extra fee. Want to use the special bathroom sorry that's an extra fee. Concessions are also absurdly expensive. At our last event, my husband got one beer that came with a shot of bottom shelf whiskey and it was $19. Also there seemed to be some staffing issues. It was supposed to start at 8 o'clock with the doors opening at 7:30 however we got there. We were told that the performer had pushed the start to 9 o'clock. However, once we were seated, it was clear the things were not running smoothly after the opening act introduced our performer, there was an uncomfortable pause before he ran out and said "sorry about that they literally just knocked on my door and told me I was up" there was no stage lighting, save for one tracking spotlight that nobody seemed to be manning because it did not follow our performer. Fortunately, he was a comedian and handled it all with humor. Between the horrible stage lighting, and no one manning the tracking spotlight it just seemed incredibly amateurish. I have been to high school performances that had a better stage crew. The biggest turn off for me, though was at the end of the night as we were filing out the staff was very rudely, directing people, almost aggressively herding everybody to get out of the building. Even those of us waiting for people that were using the restroom were told we had to wait for them outside. It was incredibly rude with no reason for need for the abrupt exit. For what we paid to attend this I do not at all feel like we got our moneys worth, but in the world of venues, you don't have a lot of choices. Overall, I give this venue a 2 1/2 stars but I'll round it up to three because they do get some fairly decent acts.

Hollywood Undead rocked the house and was a great performance!

The venue is very intimate and allows you to feel like part of the show. There are many beverage and food counters. Beer was pricey at 12.50 a can for Stella and cash is not accepted, however the service was fast and polite.

Went to a concert for the first time to see the Black Pumas. It's a great intimate venue. Similar to HOuse of Blues with the main floor being a standing room only section and seats in the upper level perimeter. We actually had seats and even though they were in the upper row, it was still a great view of the stage. Look forward to seeing more concerts.

20 Monroe is the newest concert venue in Grand Rapids supported by LiveNation. It is a great alternative for popular acts that can't quite fill an arena nor want to play at a place like Van Andel Arena or want to step it up a notch from The Intersection. My first time here was for the Hanson show. Yes, I know. They are my guilty pleasure and the 13-year-old inside of me can now die happy! We arrived just after open doors time and the line was wrapped all the way around the whole building and then some. I am glad I was able to get in with VIP access and skip waiting in line. The VIP access also gave us the ability to go into The Vanguard room which is a nice musically themed room with private bathroom, private bar, some lounge seating and a balcony outside. The only thing that was a bit odd compared to other venue is that when you walk upstairs for the mezzanine seating area the lady monitoring the area had to check your ticket every time you walked by her. I was confused at first and only thought she was there if you needed assistance with your seat and didn't realize there was a line, so I tried to walk by and was hold otherwise. Anyway, just never really experienced that before so it threw me a bit off. Other than that sitting upstairs was awesome. I am kind of beyond the days of standing on the floor next to everyone sweaty and trying to see. The seats upstairs are a good size and comfortable. The sound and lighting were great! Hanson rocked it!

My experience here, TRULY, gets better and better EVERY time I come! I visited over the weekend for the "monster's ball" event for Halloween and had such a blast! This event definitely exceeded my expectations.. since there was SO much going on I'm just going to list it all off.. 1. Circus performers and a man literally dancing in a costume on stilts as soon as you walk in (I would break my neck.. I commend you sir") 2. VIP room on the top floor of the event with its own bar, music, and balcony 3. Serve yourself pizza buffet with different options that you didn't have to wait in line for! (a little dangerous but every man for himself! haha) 4. Décor and performers on stage the entire time complete with a dj.(I really liked this because if this event was out of your comfort zone, you still had something to watch if you didn't wanna mingle) 5. Awesome people in some of the coolest costumes I have seen dancing the night away! (Two friends dressed up one in all silver one in all gold and had signs on them that said "Au" & "Ag" shout out to you ladies! Clever!) 6. Access to the bob from the second floor This event showed the full potential of 20 Monroe Live, they pulled all the stops and even with the space being at capacity, it didn't feel cramped! My new favorite venue in grand rapids, hands down! :)

I love this place. I really do. And I'm probably a little more qualified than most to review it. See, we've now attended 6 shows at 20 Monroe and have tickets for 3 more. First, the sound. Oh the sound. It is definitely the best place to see a show in GR if you like to hear your music. The house lights are pretty rad too. It's pretty incredible to see a local band play with a national act level light show. We've now had tickets in all parts of the venue. I've found that I prefer the lower mezz for seats. The floor has been interesting. We were up front for a show, which was awesome, but another show we found ourselves in the back and the stage seemed like it was low. It was hard to see. A couple of nights ago, however, we went again and watched the last couple of songs from the back and could see perfectly well. Did they raise the stage? I knocked a star off for this combined with what I will agree are insane drink prices. $20 for a 24oz beer is beyond the pale in my opinion. The upside to the insane drink prices is that there aren't a lot of people getting out of control drunk, so maybe it's a good thing? Overall though, I am so grateful that a venue drawing national acts has come to GR. My wallet isn't glad, but we've already had an incredible time this year and I look forward to many more shows.

Anthrax doing what they do best....kick ass!
    Rick S.

Not a bad place for a show....ticket prices can be outrageous though....$120 for Ted Nugent? Really? My girl and I seen Anthrax with Killswitch Engage here....supposedly the first metal concert for the arena. Seating was great...food was ok....burrito in a bag? We even had the chance to meet Anthrax after the show which was kick ass and sponsored by FYE music chain in Grand Rapids! But sound system, view of show and the concert acts and friendly staff is what will bring us back again!!

I'm not l'amouring the prospect of paying 15 bucks for a shot and a bud.
    Beth C.

I dig this venue. It's a really nice size, so you feel like there isn't a bad seat in the house. I am super short, so the person standing in front of me always blocks my view so my friends and I headed to the rear of the venue to dance at last night's Erasure show and have a better view of the band for vertically challenged folks like me. At a lot of venues, security likes to puff their chests out and say no you can't stand there, but that was not an issue whatsoever here. Sounds like most concerts here the floor is general admission standing, which my friend said also is a good fit for this venue because you can go to the side bars and grab a drink and still be able to see and hear the band the whole time. Lots of reviewers criticized the drink costs here. Prices are pretty much exactly the same as DTE, which is where I see most of my concerts so I've gotten accustomed to pre-gaming and only grabbing one drink at the concert itself. Like DTE, it's only a couple bucks extra to get a craft beer as opposed to a Bud Light, so that's always worth the splurge. We did have to laugh at the drink special of the evening, which was named after the band we were seeing but was the antithesis of anything we could imagine Andy and Vince wanting to drink ... A Bud Light and a shot for 15 bucks. No thanks Lines for the bathroom weren't bad, the bathroom was clean and well-stocked. Sound quality was also good, although that may come down to the band itself as opposed to the venue in particular. Erasure has been performing for 32 years, so they've got this stuff on lock. While parking close to the venue is generally expensive and involves fighting traffic in a parking ramp or paid lot, we parked about five or six blocks away and enjoyed the stroll there and had free parking on the street since we arrived after the meters stopped running.

Are the Mezzanine tickets work it? They're 4x GA which seems pretty steep. Is GA that bad at this venue that it pays to go up there?

Your guests get one little coat rack that looks as if they bought it online, and it's in a back hallway as you make your way to the restrooms. It's a cramped space and I wonder why this place was so poorly built, but then I remembered what I call the 'benefactor factor,' and it became more and more clear. The only way that this place becomes "gorgeous," as it's been referred to in other posts, is if you spend a ton of money with a trained event professional (outside and separate cost, of course) to beautify it. The two white, male bartenders assigned to her event were not friendly to the guests, creating an off-putting atmosphere right from the start. This behavior is utterly unacceptable, disgusting and was clearly racially motivated. Given that their wedding was attended primarily by Black and Brown guests we knew exactly why they said it! Absolutely a racist trope that we don't tip or tip well. Multiple guests complained to the bride, groom and/or someone in wedding party about this. It is deeply troubling that a venue they entrusted with such a special occasion would employ individuals who clearly harbor racial bias. All I will say is that minority couples need to be aware. No one should have to worry or deal with this bs on their special day nor should their guests.
