Specialties
We are a small family owned business that has lived and worked in Glacier Bay National Park and Gustavus for over 30 years. Our goal is to provide accommodations that are safe, cozy and provide everything you need to enjoy your visit neighboring the 2 largest wilderness area on the planet, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve!
We have two fully equipped cabins to choose from. The Spruce Tip and The Yarrow's Nest. Both cabins have bicycles available for use and portable firepits.
The Yarrow's Nest is our heart place as my husband and I built it together the winter of 1998. At that time, we only had an outhouse. Our daughter Yarrow spent her first year in that cabin while we built the big house in 2005. In 2023 we remodeled the Yarrow's Nest and added a dining area and a real bathroom with laundry facilities.
The Spruce Tip was built in 2022 and down the trail from the Yarrow's Nest. This cabin is a little bigger with a large deck for enjoying the thick forest and birds.
Our house lies on the same property of 7 acres. When we aren't off enjoying the wilderness, we can be found at home tending the garden and our chickens. We enjoy visitors so feel free to head down the trail for a visit. We also respect your space so when you rent from us, you can expect to have the cabins to yourself and know that we are just down the trail or a phone call away if you need anything.
History
Established in 2022.
Gustavus, Alaska is a small community of under 600 people and bordering Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. People that make Gustavus their home need to be creative in making a living and still preserving the character of this sweet, close knit community.
My husband and met in Glacier Bay as seasonal workers. We fell in love with each other and the area and before we knew it, we had 7 acres of raw land. Young and adventurous, we got to work building a little cabin (now The Yarrow's Nest) and a life in Gustavus. There's an old saying that I've hear. "You come for the place but stay for the people". For us, it's a lot of both.
We started the cabin rentals as a way to obviously earn an income but also share this amazing place with others while increasing our opportunities to live the Alaskan lifestyle where we can carve out a life, hunt, fish, gather and garden and be active members of our community. We hope that our love for this place shines through in our cabins.
Meet the Business Owner: Karen P.
I was born and raised in the Seattle area by Dutch immigrants with an adventurous spirit. Those adventures led me to Alaska where I met my husband Larry. We were seasonal workers at the time and somehow received a loan over the phone from a bank in Juneau, 60 airmiles away in 1998. We built our first cabin over that winter and lived in it for the next 6 years. Since then we have built a house and a second cabin.
I love how independent our lifestyle is here and how close to the land we are able to live. We heat our home from the trees on our property, drink rainwater from the sky, grow food in our garden, collect eggs from our chickens, hunt, fish and gather. We spend time with our community and actively volunteer our time to the community of Gustavus. I also enjoy traveling and backpacking as much as possible. All these things are what fills my bucket!
