"Burning the ground I break from the crowd I'm on the hunt…read moreI'm after you I smell like I sound. I'm lost and I'm found And I'm hungry like the wolf ..." When confronted with a deeply perplexing conundrum, I often resort to the wisdom offered by the great social commentators, Duran Duran. For example, when squeezing and scampering my way through Marienplatz and its throngs of tourists like a squirrel trying to cross Times Square, I sometimes catch a whiff of the edibles...and then I'm hungry. Like the wolf. A squirrel wolf, if you like. But who wants to pay €4 for a coffee and €7 for a sandwich? Get your Hände hoch if you said, "ICH NICHT!" because nor do I. Squirrel wolves often forget to go to the ATM, so we much prefer, say, €3 for a sandwich, and for that reason do I so love coming to this little place. Also, because their Bavarian accents are charming. And if you order one of their nifty salads to eat there, they will put it into a huge bowl with real utensils for you to eat at one of their standing tables. And because after 6PM, most everything is half off (excepting salads, beers, juices, and candy bars). So if your "Mouth is alive with juices like wine," I recommend you bring your hunger to the Wolf.

Most of us walk in and out of the Hauptbahnhof and seldom notice the goodies hiding in this…read moresupermarket or what may pass as one here in Munich. Yes, the fruits are tastier, the variety of basic staples bigger and ok, the steaks better than anything at the other places around town (with the exception of the Viktualienmarkt or Frische Paradies). But what those of us who once in a while are seduced to shop there definitely pass up is the open kitchen sections of the store. What?!? Open kitchens? Yeah, right there as you enter on the right hand side, tucked in a corner is what could very well be a 1/4 star Michelin restaurant. OK, I may be taking it a 1/4 star too far. But the "restaurant", while simple in its look and fare (all fish) is actually one hell of a good place to grab lunch. Ingredients come naturally from its seafood section and the cooking is mostly North Sea inspired, but I will tell you this: their one secret, and one I have frequently seen being repeatedly asked for by most customers and myself is the fish soup. Hangover cure to some, light power lunch to others, this simple yet potent fare has people standing around waiting for patrons to quickly vacate the premises and sit down to enjoy this delicacy. I have so far identified only the salmon as one of its main ingredients, yet all the other ones are present in nice large chunks, swimming in a stew that must have taken hours to thicken such as it is presented to you. Accompany it with a 2CL glass of wine from the many on offer and you have yourself a very decent, healthy and tasty lunch. Oh yeah, prices are surprisingly not too bad. The bowl of soup is about 7,90EUR and is big enough to leave you satisfied. Bon Appetit!

This is the food department of the Karstadt by Hauptbahnhof. It's not huge but I like their meat…read moreand deli sections, and their cheese, fish and wine sections are also pretty good. The fruit and vegetable section is more hit and miss. They also have a quite good American section and several small restaurants (including a sushi bar and a seafood restaurant) that are fine for lunch. It's easy to stop by here on the way from work as you have direct access from the basement level of the Hauptbahnhof. I'd have given four stars if they were not fairly expensive.
