    05/28/18 Giro

Said by some to be Stockholm's premier Pizzeria it was as the first stop of a two-part supper that diners sat down at Giro, the lengthy Restaurant at Sveavaegen 46 no doubt making a good first impression by way of its imported wood-fired oven and a menu full of top quality ingredients including several brought in from the markets of Naples and Rome. Open since 2015 but referencing traditions dating back over one hundred years to Italy, the leavening and baking methods of Da Michele Pizzeria referenced in creating a traditional Pie occasionally adorned by modern ingredients, it is to a Menu of nothing but Pizza, Olives and a lone Salad that guests are introduced upon entry, approximately two-dozen Pies in total. Using ovens readied for lunch and burning until 22h00 nightly, the space fairly large but mostly empty around 16h00, it was after debating several choices that two Pizzas were selected for around 200 SEK each, one arriving after the other as staff prefers to fire each separately when possible and first bites of the puffy rim around "Bufalina Con Fiocchi di Parma" speaking of excellent craftsmanship from the small flecks of Salt on its bottom to melted Fior di Latte and slightly cooler Buffalo Mozzarella set against thinly sliced Ham. Almost "White" Pies thanks to the use of roasted Tomatoes instead of Sauce, Tear-drops plucked from their Vines and rinsed prior to placement atop Dough, it was in a similar display of excellence that a Pizza featuring Calabrian Sausage added a bit of heat plus more blistering to Giro's product, the fact that a thumbsize Cannoli lacked sweetness not unexpected considering Giro's focus on authenticity but the Shell being a little soggy on the bottom admittedly a bit disappointing.

Come to Giro for a "just larger than personal" pizza with a gluten free crust available. It definitely was tasty and had a yummy wood fire flavor. It was a little mushy in the middle and was made a bit gummy as it cooled. It was rather expensive for personal pizzas, especially once you paid the up charge to make it gluten free. I would eat there again if I had a pizza craving, but it wasn't a "must visit" for me.

For those of you who don't know already, Scandinavia can be a gluten-free paradise. Just about anything, including delicious Italian-style pizza, can be made gluten-free. On a chilly evening in Stockholm, we just needed a pizza, darn it, and popped into Giro. To atmosphere was friendly and welcoming with a mix of couples and larger groups of folks from all over the world enjoying what Giro has to offer. The list of pizzas is long and tempting - it was hard to choose. I went with the sausage and mushroom pizza that just hit the spot. They have a great wine and beer list and delicious salads in addition to their pizzas. Giro would be a friendly place for a dinner for two or a big pizza party with friends. Definitely check it out if you are in Stockholm!

Best gluten free pizza I have ever had. Super thick crust and I made 3 meals out of my pizza. The wait staff was also super sweet and attentive.

Simply the best pizzeria in town. And I've tried many. Very nice staff. Good location. A bit pricy though.

Twenty-plus years ago, I had one in Napoli and until now, I haven't found any pizza place that could replicate that experience.

    Pizzeria Maestro - Falafel salad

I wanted something light and falafel salad with pita bread sounded like the perfect fare. They…read moremade it to order and the falafel was steaming hot. It was great in taste at this casual restaurant. Service was great and a free drink came with my order. Everything was fresh and tasty.

This is really a 2.5 star review, rounded up to 3…read more The positives first: 1. Pizza was thin crust. By NYC standards, the crust was wimpy -- not glutinous / chewy enough -- and a little underdone, but the husband and five year old gobbled it down anyway. 2. The food came out improbably fast. 3. Prices were bargain basement for Stockholm. 4. The guys who worked there (north African or Turkish) were nice-ish in a gruff kind of way, and were tolerant of our unintelligible efforts at speaking guidebook Swedish. Through some pointing and a few English words, we were able to communicate what we wanted. They were pretty affirmatively helpful to my husband; they were standoffish with me. Maybe just a cultural thing. 5. There's free "salad" (sort of a cabbage slaw) that comes with meals, which you help yourself to. It had a mayonnaise-y dressing and was sitting out unrefrigerated. The slaw, for all its possible hygienic shortcomings, tasted pretty good. 6. They have some pretty wild flavor combinations. The "tropical" comes with toppings that include banana, pineapple and curry powder. Wow. We had the "Hawaiian" with ham (minute pieces of shredded ham-colored substance) and pineapple. The mostly non-existent ham actually suited us just fine since our little one required most of it to be picked off his slices anyway. The negatives: 1. I had an awful upset stomach a few hours later, which may or may not have been related to what I ate here. I had the shrimp salad and some of that aforementioned slaw. The shrimp salad was pretty bad, a strange (to me) concoction of pepperoncini, canned black olives, shredded mozzarella and tiny, waterlogged salad shrimp on top of a largely iceberg lettuce-based mix, which I hate. I did like the ripe-ish tomatoes in there, though, and the cucumber. 2. The ingredients here are not of high quality. They closely resemble some of the lower-grade $1 pizza slice places in NYC. That said, see #1 of the positives, above. 3. The place is about as clean as a fast food pizza place in the US. Read: the tables are sort of sticky, the floors could be mopped a bit more thoroughly than they are. But I didn't find it grotesque. Overall, this fit the bill of what we were looking for: Something fast, easy and accessible to a picky five-year old before a show at Fasching. I hope for the sake of Stockholmers that this isn't the best pizza in the city.
