So all this deliciousness definitely justifies the $75 price tag! (I struggle finishing the set and am so full I either forget about the rice or just have a few bites of it) When you get served your steak it's also accompanied with 4 dipping sauces - ponzu, teriyaki, sesame and unfortunately the last one has slipped my mind. Alas, all great accompaniments. So you get your steak rare and then its up to you to cook it - cut off a slice thick or thin, then let it sit on the hot stone to sizzle to your liking, then go nuts at chowing it down with a sauce of your choice. For $50 you can spoil yourself to the tastiest Teppanyaki that I believe could be in Melbourne. I was so entertained and impressed by the Chef, who tossed and fried and cooked the shit out of our fish, right at our table. The aroma, flavours, sizzle, the skills and authenticity of the whole thing created a surreal feeling. It was truly amazing. This is a very traditional Japanese restaurant, the waitresses look stunning with in costume. The whole place is exquisite with an entire Oriental feel. I normally reserve this great eatery for business; a great place to impress clients, however this was a very special occasion in my parent's 54th wedding anniversary. Michael our gracious host greeted the clan with smiles and promptly escorted us to our table. We ordered a mixture from the set menu; seafood, steak and chicken. Shoya is a large, multi-levelled restaurant so there's never much trouble getting a table. We opted for a regular table rather than the horigotatsu style (sunken tables) or seating by the sushi counter. I have now been to Shoya twice and the only seating I've yet to try is the by the sushi counter, but I can tell you that the sunken tables are more fun than the regular ones. Their sake list is excellent and I really recommend overlooking the wine list for a good sake (not that the wine list isn't good, but you know, when in Rome/a Japanese restaurant...) or placing your order with your very professional waiter and letting them match a sake to the dishes you've selected. By the way, if the menu gets to be too much, there is no shame in opting for the degustation or omakase. This way you know you're letting the chef show-off his best and finest dishes to you. Order from the menu though and you will be rewarded with immaculately clean and balanced flavours. Try the agadashi dofu and the Hokkaido spider crab legs (lightly battered and fried, and to die for).

I also ordered some yellowtail nigiri and salmon. Service was prompt and friendly. It wasn't too busy when we were here but when we walked past later it was packed. The downside of this is that when the restaurant is busy, I imagine the kitchen sounds could get quite noisy for the seating environment. ~ The restaurant is open 'late' on some nights -- and they mean it more than other restaurants in the area. Kanpai was actually my second choice of places to try, however arriving at the first restaurant at 10.15pm on a Saturday night and finding it closed made me give Kanpai a try. On the Saturday night I was here, the kitchen closed at about 11pm. ~ Sadly, the entrees and mains did not come out at the same time. It's a little pet peeve of mine, but if I'm eating with someone else and my entree arrives ten minutes before theirs, I have the choice of either being rude and gobble it up without waiting for theirs to show, or allow it to go cold while waiting for my dining partner's dish.
