Gill came recommended and several people at work said they'd heard good things about him. Our experience was mediocre at best. We started with 4 planting beds that were a mess, as well as some fruit trees that needed to be planted, and needed irrigation help. Despite discussing all three of these with Gill in exhaustive detail, his crew only really seemed to care about the first two (and didn't care too much about those, besides). We were happy with the beds, for the most part, except for the fact that the soil under the pine needles was left in huge hard clumps, the pine needles were left in a very thin layer, and there didn't seem to be any logic to where he planted some things. When we asked why a rosebush had been transplanted to a spot directly next to another bush, as opposed to centered, he said "I don't know". I expect a rationale for what his crew was doing for the kind of money I was paying him. He didn't always have it. A heirloom rosebush with a metal tag went missing - apparently his crew discarded it despite the fact it was in the beds and tagged and had been discussed. His crew broke a hose fitting while doing the work and Gill seemed unfazed by this. Deep footprints in the soft soil were left from his crew across our beds when we did the _first_ walkthrough. I spent a lot of time explaining my irrigation needs and how I wanted to be sure that when he left my irrigation system was optimized for the new layout. He said he would do it but he didn't and was clearly irritated that I expected him to do what we discussed. He put an irrigation head on a 2' riser for no good reason and it looks horrible. I'll likely have to remove it myself. When I asked him about it he said "I thought it would need to cover that area but I guess it doesn't." What the change did do is irrigate my neighbor's yard and spray their siding. We talked about where to plant the fruit trees but his crew put them on property we don't even own. Nuff said there. In the end, I paid him just to end it. Gill's customer service attitude stinks - he never took any responsibility for the failures or shoddy work. I would not be writing this review right now if he had apologized for the oversights and made a conscientious effort to correct them but he pushed hard for payment, which I withheld until the job was at least close to being properly done. We had a salt water pool installed at our residence in Salem, Alabama. Needless to say everything went wrong after it was installed and we had over a 3 foot drop down to our pool and no stairs. Furthermore we needed desperately to have a retaining wall installed as well. While looking on the internet I learned about Gill Cargill Landscapes and looked at his website. I contacted Mr. Cargill and he came over the next day and gave us an estimate as well as explaining everything he was going to do. Mr. Cargill kept us abreast on when he could start and he and his crew got to work. What an amazing job they did. The before and after is unbelievable. I would strongly recommend Gill Cargill Landscapes for retaining walls, stone steps, and landscaping. Will definitely use him again in the future for additional landscaping as needed. Gill completed a small job for us at my old house and I was very happy with it. Even though we have moved the yard still looks good. Our new house had a drainage problem like many houses near the river. There was an old stone retaining wall that wasn't doing the job at all. Gill was honest with me and told me it would cost twice as much to put back in a stone wall. He explained that there was a type of "stone look" block that was attractive and has a drainage system built into it. Gill built a fantastic stairway with a landing for the wall. I am very happy with the way it looks. We had an almost useless sprinkler system that he repaired and then added on what was needed for the new landscaping. The new wall now is in a beautiful sculptural curve. Then came the best part! We were able to plant all the shrubs and flowers I've ever dreamed of because we have more room. Gill sat down one day with me and looked at a list of plants that I wanted and told me which ones would work where such as: too big to go there, and not enough sun there, and which ones to help create more privacy. Gill showed me some pictures of great new plants that he was having good luck in planting in yards nearby. He called a fantastic tree and stump guy and cut down some awkward pines and some that were in the way. He dug up some plants we wanted to save and moved them to fit the new plan. Gill pointed out that would not all transplant well but if they didn't make it we could just stick a new one in there. Gill said that all the plants would help soak up even more water. He pulled out some old unwanted unruly shrubs and scraped out a path which starts at the stairway and circles way back in the yard. He laid down slate pavers for it. Now we are using and enjoying our whole yard which was just overgrown woods before. He was very patient with me and explained everything in the beginning and as things moved along. I felt comfortable asking him anything. I was so impressed that I asked him what he would do with the area near our driveway. He drew a much better line for the flower bed. It all looks so professional now. Our back and side yard are no longer a soaking mess. I thought it might take forever to finish the project because it was so big and it kept raining but they were very proficient and it was amazing what they could get done in a day! I would definitely hire him again but now my yard looks Awesome! read more
