My brother was placed at Gilchrist. He received great care and the social workers were extremely kind. I would definitely recommend.

Gilchrist is a beautiful and quaint hospice located in a picturesque setting. They have an iPad for you to sign in and out as a visitor, which is cool except they only have one. So if you're trying to sign in and others are trying to sign out, there can be a line. It would be nice to have one iPad for signing in, and another iPad for signing out. The rooms are spacious and clean. Overall the ambiance is very peaceful; however, I was not pleased with the nurses assistant that was caring for my friend. She was very harsh and showed little compassion or care. The actual nurse was great and friendly. Overall I think Gilchrist needs to evaluate their staff to ensure that they are the right fit for their company. read more

I used Gilchrist 20 years ago for a loved one and had a so-so experience, but I was hopeful that when my grandfather enrolled in the home hospice in 2023 that things would have improved. Sadly, my experience was so much worse. My grandfather was in their care for 1 year and I was the family's point of contact for the last 4 months when his health went downhill. One of our concerns was the med supply companies they use. We waited days for oxygen and weeks for proper dressings for his bed sores. We sometimes were without gloves, wipes, and diapers due to delivery delays. The 24/7 helpline also had its shortcomings. I often waited on hold before someone answered the line. RNs were gruff, rushed, and didn't even take a minute or two to read over my grandfather's chart before giving out advice. They won't let you speak with an MD. The RN calls them then calls you back. Once, on a Sunday, the RN flat out refused to reach out to my grandfather's MD with our concerns. The home-visiting RNs also let us down. We were told that he was transitioning and to come immediately to his bedside. It turned out all he needed was Mucinex and to have his head elevated and he returned to baseline the next day. He lived an additional 4 MONTHS! This ordeal was obviously upsetting to the family and we requested a new RN. We were made to feel like our request was out of the ordinary and they never acknowledged what happened or the impact it might have had on all of us. It became very clear that their loyalty is to themselves and to keeping the $ flowing by billing our insurance. What you might not realize is that your loved one will never be physically examined by a MD after they are enrolled. My grandfather only saw a MD via telehealth which was a joke and consisted of less than 5 minutes facilitated by the RN. The purpose was only so they could renew his enrollment and keep billing Medicare. As other reviewers have mentioned, Gilchrist's go-to medications are Ativan and Morphine. It seemed like that was all they were familiar with and all they wanted to prescribe. My grandfather had a handful of typical chronic conditions that we thought they would be able to treat moving forward. The MD seemed resistant and annoyed when asking for maintenance and acute meds or when other health issues arose. One time I called the helpline when he was complaining of some joint pain in his L knee. I asked if I could give him one of a few options we had at the house. I was told to give him MORPHINE! The cherry on top of this entire awful experience was that the morning after he passed away I was contacted about his routine visit. The RN hadn't checked her email which stated that he was deceased. Because of these reasons and many more, I beg of you to research other palliative and hospices organizations before turning to Gilchrist. read more

Horrifying. We were in the home program and transferred to in patient Saturday evening. We were told to wait until he was ready. The nurse came out to get us (Cindy Y) and we found him in only a hospital gown shaking uncontrollably in a room set to 55 degrees. His hair was wet from a bath. No towels no blankets. Absolutely zero regard for a human being. We immediately covered him with our coats ans screamed for blankets. The nurses attitude was horrible. The meds took another 10 minutes. My dad was tortured by this woman. The charge nurse and ans subsequent nurse assigned did a good job but I can never forget what Cindy Y did to him. Be careful. read more

My mom was in a lot of pain and I brought her there for pain management to find out they pump them with a lot of drugs. They are really horrible. They lie. The nurses are lazy and don't want to bend over to take a patient's blood pressure. The managers literally stab you in the back while smiling in your face. I thought Stella Maris was bad however, they are worse. I had respite planned after the Chaplin talked me into it. I called to confirm plans and the social worker said that my 98 and a half year old father wasn't eligible any longer. When I read the discharge papers it said that he was getting better. I was extremely surprised to find out that there's now a cure for Alzheimer's dementia and his heart problems. Among many other problems including the fact that he can no longer walk by himself and barely sit up. When he was manic and I called no one came out to do anything , when he was bleeding I had to demand someone to come out because I was told that that there wasn't anything that they could do. Right before they told me that they were discharging him I was told that they didn't have any documented events of manic behavior for him . My head literally spun around like the exorcist. When I called no one ever wanted to come so I stopped calling..... why would I keep calling? That's just plain stupid. I think the main issue was because I asked for a change in nurses but if a man can't spit in a trash can in his own home and go to the bathroom in a camode without offending someone it's a bad fit. A nurse's job entails dealing with bodily fluids. If you can't go be a pilot or a snake charmer. Although I wouldn't trust them with my worst enemy's pet rattle snake. Ijs. Btw Google maps reviews keeps removing my reviews although it's supposed to be a forum for your opinion. But they can also kiss where the sun doesn't shine. My mom was there for her end of life for 6 days. I cannot express my gratitude for the loving care everyone there gave her. She was bathed and had her hair washed every day. They gently brushed her hair and tucked her into her sheets. She was rotated twice a day, gently. The food is outstanding. The day she got there they served shrimp bisque, among other things, which gave her a reason to eat, and she ate more than she had in a while. They constantly checked on her. They quietly explained they keep the rooms cooler because it's easier for them to breathe, and they actually prefer it. My mother, who is always cold, did not ask me to get her extra blankets. We were given updates as soon as we arrived for the day. Gilchrist knows what they are about. Whenever she got agitated, they helped reduce her agitation. She was in a great deal of pain and struggled to breathe, and they gave her comfort, as we requested. Her wish to die quietly and pain-free in her sleep was attained. One star is being generous. My mother was in this unit for an extended period of time after a long hospital stay. The staff, except for two specific employees, was extremely lazy, uncaring and uneducated. I'm not sure how they even got their nursing degrees. I am convinced that if myself and my siblings were not there constantly, my mom would not have left there alive. On several occasions, a nurse tried to give her the wrong medications. We reported this and nothing seemed to be done about her. An aide told me that this particular nurse had given other patients the wrong medications, including medication to make them sleep, on several occasions and that she told the manager that the nurse is going to kill someone but to no avail. I would not recommend Gilchrist to anyone. It's a money-making business that is not patient centered. As a matter of fact, my mom fell while there because she didn't want to bother anyone to take her to the bathroom. They made it clear that it was a bother to be asked to do anything for her. Wherever you take your loved one, be present as often as possible! read more

The Nurses, Chaplain, Case Manager and Social worker were very compassionate and professional. We were very happy with how quickly they responded to our calls and came to the house. I loved how they were so knowledgeable and explained everything to us. They made us feel very comfortable, like family, when they came to the house. I beg you not to take your loved ones here. The Medical Director Carrie Hempel is thee most cold hearted individual ever and I work with Lab rat doctors (Medical Scientist) who show rats more decency. The Facility is Beautiful and Quiet, but the minute families leave the medication injections begin around the clock (wheather your loved ones need it or NOT) the overwhelming amount of narcotic (MORPHINE) which quickly cause addiction mixed with a Tranquilizer (Ativan) will kill any weak person. And Please read documents you sign because they take away the right for you to Autopsy and if you are able to get one dont have it done at GBMC they are the same place. Please exhaust all your options. read more

Horrible. They "forced us" to go here after being at home and then planned to speed up the death with extra pain meds and ativan. In their world pain meds make everything go away (they don't) but they appear to have only 3 tricks - pain (morphine, etc.), ativan, and haldol, no other meds work in the Gilchrist world. The nurses and aides cackle loudly in the hallway at all hours of the day/night. No respect for life. Having "christ" in their name has to be a joke. They seem to make a lot more money if they get you here and you stay vs. staying at home. It was a miserable, awful experience. You have a different nurse everyday, just like a hospital, it's highly stressful. I would never use them again for anyone that I loved. They pretend to be Christian while taking the tax benefits associated with being a non-profit. read more
