My wife and I are retired and living on Social Security income. We used to own a business for many years but turned it over to my sons when we retired. My wife and I made an appointment with Gibson Tax Services to review our documentation to have them prepare and file our 2025 return. The appointment was set almost two weeks from my call to request. We met with Ben for our appointment and he reviewed our documents which only consisted of our two 1099's from Soc. Sec. and some other documentation I furnished from the business. It was a very short meeting in which Ben reviewed the 1099's and the other documentation I brought and said OK. We left without any explanation of how long it would be before our taxes would be filed or if we needed to follow up. I just assumed they would be filed within a week or so. Two weeks later, when I had not heard anything from Gibson Tax Services, I decided to call them. They answered the call; I identified myself and told her that I was following up to learn the progress of our return. She looked our file up on her computer and said, "Ben is still working on it and as soon as he has finished with it, we will let you know." I was hoping for more information, but I said OK and hung up. At the end of the third week, when I had not heard anything from Gibson Tax Services, I called back. Again, I identified myself and told her that I was following up to learn the progress of our return. She looked our file up on her computer and said, "Ben is still working on it and as soon as he has finished with it, we will let you know." I asked if there was a problem and she said that if there is, Ben would be in contact. I reminded her that it had been 3 weeks and she replied, "as soon as they are done, we will let you know." Her tone never changed. She was pleasant, upbeat and I basically felt like she was completely ignoring my concern. At the end of the fourth week, when I had not heard anything from Gibson Tax Services, I called back again. This time I was a little more aggressive but was still given the same cookie cutter responses. Again, her tone was pleasant and upbeat, but she never offered an apology (so I assumed this was normal) or showed any concern. I then got a little short with her and asked if there was someone else, I could speak to and again (with the same pleasant upbeat tone) said she would let them know I had called to check on my returns. I was mad so I said, "that's it, this is the kind of customer service you provide." She did not answer, there was a long pause and I hung up. This call was on Friday. The following Monday I decided to pick up my documents/files to take them to another tax service that I had contacted to prepare/file my returns. When I showed up to request my tax documents, they acted as though it was common. No questions, after a small wait while they located them, just here you go. I had already made an appointment at Denver Tax Services for later that week. When we arrived at Denver Tax Services, we were met by Kendell, who took us to his desk without any wait, reviewed our documents, explained everything very thoroughly, then completed our return and filed it electronically while we sat in front of him. Later that evening, I received two separate emails, one from the State and the other from the IRS that each return had been received and accepted. They've had my taxes as well as some family members taxes for 4 months now. They either straight up don't answer when you call or they will give you the run around. We've been mislead and lied to multiple times when calling to ask for updates. I understand their business has grown recently, but when you can't keep up with demand maybe it's time to turn business away. None of my family members will be using them next year. Just hope we aren't charged some crazy fees due to their negligence. Honestly at this point, I'm prepared to go to a lawyer. read more

We have had a similar experience as the others have indicated (terrible communications and follow-up ~ well there was none). We filed late for 2017 taxes and were not given the appropriate amount to pay at the time which resulted in excess of $1,500 in late fees, interest and penalties for federal and state income tax. I would never recommend or use this company again. read more

We have been going to Gibson Tax for 6+ years and every year we are blown away by their ability to find a return for us and how they explain what we should be doing for the following tax year. Wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

After ending a 10 year relationship with ABC Tax Services in Lincolnton because of horrible customer service, the wife called Gibson and McFarland and made an appointment to have our taxes done here. Had an 11 am appointment and at 11:20 I had to ask the woman at the desk how much longer till we were going to be seen. She checks and says "She's coming to get you now" But we still waited another 10 minutes, so 30 minutes past our appointment time. They have the strangest and most outdated way of doing taxes here. First, some one fills out the old fashioned paper forms in pencil. When they are done, some one else comes in and explains why you did or did not get a refund and any changes in the tax codes that may affect you next year. Then your sent home while your taxes are passed yet again to some one else to check for accuracy then enter them into the computer. When that is done you have to make a second trip back to sign your return and pay. We were told when we left it would just be "a few days". Four days later we have heard nothing so my wife calls to find out whats going on. After a lengthy time on hold, the woman tells her " I don't know why your were told that, it usually take 1 1/2 to 2 weeks" WTF?!?! Does the right hand not know what the left hand is doing any more?? Finally 10 days later we are called back to sign our return and pay. Being new customers if they had advised us up front that was the way they did taxes we could have made a decision if we wanted to wait that long for the process to complete or go elsewhere, but I guess they thought it wasn't important enough to tell us. We should have gone some where else, paid a little more money, been in and out in an hour or less, taxes done, filed and our refund already in our bank account long before Gibson and McFarland even finished processing our return. read more

I had a similar experience as the previous review. After many years of using Pat Gibson and recommending him to friends, we had a horrible experience filing our 2017 return. We met and left our information in early March and became concerned when we hadn't heard anything after two weeks. Phone calls were not returned and when I finally got the receptionist, I only received flippant excuses. We got our return after a month of waiting and after I told them I was coming to pick up our information. We had such a good, personal and professional relationship with Pat Gibson for over ten years but it seems his business has gotten too large to provide prompt and professional service. There are so many new laws every year and somehow These folks manage to not only keep up with them but know how to apply them to your situation. I've had many accountants and tax services over the years with complicated returns and Gibson is the best by far at taking care of us at tax time! read more
