I would love to have been able to walk down to the beach(es) from the viewpoint up above... but even without that ability, Twelve Apostles is an incredible sight to behold! Definitely a must-see spot along the Great Ocean Road! Rock formations, stacked a bit like the Twelve Apostles - my brother thought this one was even more impressive. Pretty cool to gaze out and see island upon island sticking out from the ocean. Another picturesque lookout point, another quick stop. At this point we were a bit tired and the views started looking very similar, but this is nature and it was magnificent! Alas we bid you farewell Great Ocean Road, until we meet again!

While this is a national park that stretches along the coast from Peterborough to Warnambool, the…read moremain attraction here is what is known as The Bay of Islands. In many ways it is like the Twelve Apostles, though these stacks tend to be somewhat larger meaning that they are probably classified more as islands (though I am sure you could consider the stacks at the Twelve Apostles islands as well). I actually prefer this place much more than the Twelve Apostles in that there aren't as many tourists crowding around here, and the place is much more serene. In fact you won't find any of those touristy things such as kiosks and helecoptors, just a large empty beach and some huge rugged islands just off shore. The place is also referred to as the Bay of Martyrs, which is think is a much cooler name, probably because the word martyr sounds better than islands. I guess it also gives us a better impression of just how rugged and dangerous this coastline was to the early sailors.

A lovely right hander that can be surfed from half a metre to over three metres. The waves rap…read moreatmospherically around a sandy cliff. The point of the reef extended out from the cliff providing the take off point. Rides are long and workable, very enjoyable when smaller on a long board. In front is a typically beautiful sandy beach overlooked by native coastel bush, especially coastal Banksia trees. It's only about an hour and 20 mins from the centre of melbourne or a half hour from Geelong, so well worth a visit. If it's not working then there are plenty of other waves nearby that might be. Best surfers in the world compete here every Easter and it's refered to by Keanau Reeves in Point Break.

One of the beaches just outside of Warrnabool, there are numerous adds on the way declaring it to…read morebe a whale watching spot. I suspect that you have to be there at the right time to actually see a whale, and I suspect that one of those times does not happen to be Easter (actually, I'm not much of a whale watcher so I can't actually say when you are supposed to watch them). What I did end up spotting were surfers, but then again I suspect that you tend to always find surfers at surf beaches (though I wonder if the surfers and the whales mix). Actually, it's a pretty good surf beach, but then again most of the beaches around Warrnambool are pretty good for surfing. However, what stands out is the huge deck that stands on top of the sand dune that looks out to the sea - namely so that you may happen to catch a glimpse of a whale. They do have a number of plaques talking about whales, however when I was there I didn't have the pleasure of spotting one.

There's a patrolled area for safety. Be prepared though. The water's always bracing here. Clean, fresh but always on the cool side. The amenities are good here. Places to shower, places to change. If you tire of the beach the shops are right there for a drink, meal or whatever. Lorne beach is a great place.

Being down in the Surf Coast area, it's not hard to find great surf beaches. However, every once and a while you will be looking for something different. Torquay Beach will be exactly that. The problems though are that it's busy, being right off the main esplanade for the town. The several times we went as well, the waves were pretty much non-existent, and it was extremely windy. Our friends had to pull down their sun shelters for fear of going the way of Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz! It might be a personal preference thing... but the kids and I prefer the surf. If that's what you're looking for, try another beach. Then again, if you want large open expanses of flat sand for some cricket, make your way down here.
