I suspect that you have to be there at the right time to actually see a whale, and I suspect that one of those times does not happen to be Easter (actually, I'm not much of a whale watcher so I can't actually say when you are supposed to watch them). What I did end up spotting were surfers, but then again I suspect that you tend to always find surfers at surf beaches (though I wonder if the surfers and the whales mix). Actually, it's a pretty good surf beach, but then again most of the beaches around Warrnambool are pretty good for surfing. However, what stands out is the huge deck that stands on top of the sand dune that looks out to the sea - namely so that you may happen to catch a glimpse of a whale. They do have a number of plaques talking about whales, however when I was there I didn't have the pleasure of spotting one.

There's a patrolled area for safety. Be prepared though. The water's always bracing here. Clean, fresh but always on the cool side. The amenities are good here. Places to shower, places to change. If you tire of the beach the shops are right there for a drink, meal or whatever. Lorne beach is a great place.
