This theater recently re-opened after a months long renovation. It used to be called an I-Max theater but that format is no longer made for film so the theater now accommodates the omnipresent world of all things digital. We saw the National Parks Adventure 3D. As you enter you are given glasses to watch the movie and when you exit you can put the glasses in a bin to be sanitized and re-packaged for others to use. I love the 3D format as it makes you feel like you are really right there where they are filming the movie. At one point the actor hit ice and slush fell, my mom actually wiped her glasses to get the slush off her lens, LOL! It seems so real. The movie makes you feel proud to be an American as the views of this great land was filmed with love and care. The location and setting for the Theatre is stunning. There is a popcorn stand and an excellent book/gift store across from the theater which is right inside the building. Bring plenty of quarters and pennies so you can put them in a machine to make a crushed penny memento with a picture of the Henry Ford on your penny. Bathrooms are upstairs and downstairs. I've seen several 3D movies here and plan on seeing as many as I can. While at this site try to check out the Greenfield Village and the River Rouge Factory tour. read more

If I could see every movie at this IMAX theatre I would. Holy cow is it amazing! Boasting the biggest screen in Michigan it really is impressive. Before every film they do a little demo showing off the size of the screen and the speaker system and even that is thrilling! I geek out every time. Most recently I saw Mission Impossible 4 (surprisingly awesome) here and all of those insane stunts and locales looked even more incredible on the big big screen. I've seen nearly all the Harry Potter films in IMAX to and have no regrets, well, except that I didn't see them more than once there! What I love is that as a member of the Henry Ford I get special discount pricing on tickets here-super nice and makes it that much more affordable. Also, the concessions are not insanely priced. At my regular theatre I get a medium beverage and a medium popcorn for about 10 bucks. Here I get a souvenir cup of bottomless beverage and a large popcorn for $8! I just wish they carried ice cream because damn, was I craving some Ben and Jerry's during that stressful "scaling a glass skyscraper in Dubai" thing in the flick. Tom Cruise, you're insane and I like it. Also if you want something other than popcorn, you're out of luck. No nachos or pretzels here but that's ok with me since I only ever get popcorn and Twizzlers anyway. My main complaint is that they don't have assigned seats. It's a small complaint but still. I've been to other IMAX theatres that do and it makes life so much easier not having to wait in line to grab a good seat, especially when they only have the one theatre so if you get there early to get a good spot you'll be stuck standing around for a while waiting for the next flick to get out. But these are all minor gripes. Overall this is a fantastic theatre that I sincerely love. In a day when so many theatres boast "IMAX" screens that are only a smidge bigger than the regular screens, this puppy is the real deal. Go see a flick here if you can. I love this IMAX theatre. I've seen lots of flicks here but most notable was The Dark Knight Rises. The movie was partially filmed using IMAX cameras and film... seeing it on an IMAX screen was stunning. The theatre is HUGE. If it's a blockbuster, you'll probably be stuck sitting next to someone because they do sell every seat. It's very comfortable, though. The seats are cushy and the rows have enough space to walk without groping everyone as you stumble by. The concession stand prices are really fair, which makes up for the fact that the tickets cost more. If you're a member of the Henry Ford, you can save 15% on your IMAX tickets. You can also buy tickets online and pick them up at the theatre or even print them off at home. If you have the chance to see a movie at IMAX instead of a regular theatre, do it. The extra price of the ticket is worth the visual and sound experience. I'm so glad to live near the biggest IMAX screen in Michigan! read more

This used to be the Henry Ford IMAX, but now it's apparently no longer an IMAX theater, so they call it the "giant screen experience" - and the name is not incorrect, as this screen is GIANT! I came here for the first time twice this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, for Cinetopia Film Fest movies. The HF is a new Cinetopia venue this year and I was curious to try it out. I will say the theater is pretty cold, so if it's the summer when you go you may want to bring a jacket (I learned this on Saturday so dressed accordingly on Sunday). There is a concessions stand too as well as a stand selling alcoholic beverages. My friend and I ordered popcorn and a soda, and the soda came in a pretty cool Henry Ford cup; sodas also have unlimited refills, I believe. Check this place out the next time you want to see a movie! I think most of the films they show are more of the nature/documentary type, but I'm not 100% sure on that. read more

Definitely one of the best IMAX theatres I've ever been in. The screen is enormous, The sound system is clear and full. The seats are extremely comfortable. I've seen a couple movies there, Butterflies, Space Junk - which was very interesting and Titanic which I saw on my visit to the D last October. It's just a shame I live so far away as I love the Henry Ford and Greenfield Village so much. If you are a member of the Henry Ford, be sure to get your admission discount to the IMAX and the museum facilities. Definitely worth a stop if and when you are in the Detroit area.... read more

Returned here last night for "Hocus Pocus" as part of the theatre's new Throwback Thursday series. The film was so popular that they had to add a second showing at 9:30pm, which I was there for, and it was completely sold out, as was the first one. I hadn't realized that this theatre rebranded itself away from the IMAX format, but looking at their programming, it seems that's allowed them to be a little more diverse in the types and ranges of films that they show, which is a good thing. The physical space and capability of the theatre is pretty much what you'd expect in an IMAX venue, and seemed slightly outdated to me. The accessibility could be a bit more open, most notably seen in how everyone is funneled in through one entrance and exit. So if you're in the middle of the seating, be prepared to wait to leave. There was a long line at the concession stand when I arrived so I did not bother with that offering, though I remember prices being reasonable on a previous visit. Where I sort of forgot that this theatre existed after attending an initial screening in 2015, this visit was a good reminder of what they have to offer and proved that the complex is a good destination to keep in mind for the entirety of the Detroit area. read more

I went to see Secret Ocean last night with hubby and two friends. What a treat that it was introduced by Jean Michele Cousteau himself. What a treat! With or without his introduction, the movie is a must-see for anyone who: is an environmentalist, enjoys documentaries, is interested in ocean life, loves good camera work, likes 3-D movies, or is in any other way interested in the subject matter. The theater itself is great. The screen is HUGE and the seating is such that almost every seat gets a good 3-D view. Seats are comfortable, and the the friendly staff makes sure that everyone has a good time. I'm so glad I was able to see this movie in this theater. Next up: Humpback Whales. Awesome 3-D film experience. The National Parks was a great topic and paired with the Yelp event with a reception offering snacks, refreshments, and popcorn, let's not forget the popcorn for the movie! If losing I-Max is the price we have to pay for Giant Screen Digital 3-D, I say fair enough! We recently got our Senior Lifetime Pass for all National Parks ($10 one-time charge) and this movie was a timely motivator to start wearing it out. And at the end of a really fun evening, just when I thought "what could be better than this?", I won one of the prizes announced at the end of the movie-5 tickets to the Ford Rouge Plant Tour! Been here a bunch of times with the family and even came one time for a Yelp event to see a Jean-Michel Cousteau's ocean documentary and questionnaire. The theater is clean, it has a nice sound system and because of the large screen really not a bad seat in the house. They often show documentary type films but every so often do show a main stream movie. So if you are looking for big screen experience check it out. read more

I absolutely LOVE The Henry Ford/Greenfield Village. And the fact that they have an IMAX theatre too - awesome! I've been in over 20 countries, but grew up in the area and I took The Henry Ford for granted. It took me traveling around (and maybe just growing up a little) to realize the awesomeness of this place. If you're visiting the area, this place CANNOT be missed. If you're from here, please don't take it for granted the way I did... be thankful that you have such an amazing place in your backyard. And be thankful if you're visiting the area that you can keep yourself busy with the awesomeness that is The Henry Ford. It's pretty tough to beat this theater. It's got the biggest IMAX screen in Michigan, comfortable seating, great staff, good concession stand, and fantastic movies. Over the years we've seen a number of pictures here, most recently a free sneak preview to Kelly Slater's surf movie "The Ultimate Wave 3D". I've never seen a picture so beautiful or 3D done so well. The free part is what had me stunned on this visit. They opened up free tickets to anyone who follows them on twitter or facebook. Not onl that, free popcorn and drinks awaited us when we showed up as well. The Henry Ford is a top notch organization (check out the museum, which is attached, while you're there) and we'll be coming back here more often. read more

This place is really cool! We went here for the Yelp movie event last week. We saw Secret Ocean 3D. It was excellent. We got to meet the director Jean Michel Cousteau too. He was amazing and had some really good stories of his divings. The venue is a great place for nearly any movie. The 3D is spectacular here though. The IMAX is a huge screen. This one just happens to be the largest in Michigan. The food is your standards at any theatre. They have popcorn, pop, juices and candy, etc. We can't wait to go back. So I was just kind of curious on the imax Dearborn set up who decides to make the movies for the weekends and day-to-day schedule. They've been running Star Wars for the last 2 weeks around the holidays of 2019 it is New Year's Day of twenny twenny and Star Wars is continuously playing and playing and I'm wondering if they wanna play anything else for the kids in the families out there for the holidays other than Star Wars. I'm kind of wondering if the people that pick the movies and run the shows at the imax in Dearborn really think about the people that come to their shows if you're just going to play Star Wars continuously for weeks. read more

This place is awesome. First of all: Great parking, friendly staff, easy to find. The theater itself is fantastic. It is the perfect IMAX experience, none of that IMAX-lite stuff you see at some movie theaters (you know the ones: IMAX projection on a huge screen, but not nearly the screen size of true IMAX). Seats are super comfortable, and I felt like I had enough space to relax. I went to see Man of Steel in 3D here. Loved it. There's lots to do at the Henry Ford museum and the shopping center but I haven't explored that stuff yet. Save yourself the trouble of investigating other IMAX options in the Detroit metro area. I would like to thank the mom of the toddler who brought her child to the movies on the Friday after Thanksgiving for reminding me why I almost never go anywhere but The Henry Ford IMAX. The main reason I love going to the movies here is that the high price keeps the people who feel that just because they bought a ticket too, they don't have to turn their ringer off or they can let their toddler run speak freely for two and a half hours. People who go here are serious about their movies and treat the experience with respect......like normal humans used to. If I had to complain my only complaint would be that all movies aren't shot in IMAX. read more

Watched Tron: Legacy here. The theater is pretty big and the sound is awesome. In addition, the crowd was a great movie-going crowd, with very little hootin/hollering going on. They also allow you to buy tickets online and skip the normal line, which is a plus. There were some drawbacks: the seats weren't the most comfortable and the glasses didn't fit over one of our parties' glasses. Overall, a good theater. read more

What a place! Went to see The Hobit here and was pleasantly surprised at the girth of the place. Being from The Bay Area, I didn't think the Wolverine State could compete but good 'ol Henry Ford came through with his huge screens, stadium seating, amazing sound and really great prices. I've seen a number of movies at the IMAX and have generally been pleased with my experience. As other reviewers have noted, the screen is just huge and the sound is amazing. Although I do wish the seat backs were higher to give some more neck support to us taller folk, my only real gripes have to do with how the theater is run. For instance, I wanted to see a movie there about Lewis and Clark (I am a nerd, yes I know). But for weeks on end, they only screened that movie on Weds mornings. Since I work a conventional M-F schedule, and didn't want to take a day off to see a movie, I didn't get to see it. Mix it up! The second annoying thing is that, in the spirit of Henry Ford, they run the movies like and assembly line; one right after the other. As a result, you are forced to stand in line and wait for the theater doors to open as the previous showing concludes. When the doors do open, you have less than 5 mins to find a seat and get ready before the movie starts. read more

This is the nicest IMAX theater I've been to in the Detroit area. Unfortunately its not without its drawbacks. Since its set up like an IMAX theater it has LONG aisles, meaning if you have to use the restroom or get concessions, you are inconveniencing a large number of people. The seats are also not as comfortable as I would like. My butt was hurting after just a normal length film. The IMAX experience itself though is fantastic. The screen is huge and the sound is incredible. If you are looking to see an IMAX film, this IS the place to go. read more

Your average IMAX Theater. There are lots of seats but I would not say it stands out above any other IMAX theater I have been too. It is better than a regular movie theater but not as nice as an OMNIMAX theater. The seats are a little worn but are not terrible and it looks like the theater is being maintained but is showing some age. read more

Sadly, the IMAX at The Henry Ford is no longer showing feature films. The theater, which is one of the few IMAX theaters still projecting film, is going to transition in 2016 to an all-digital format. Hopefully that means the return of feature films, stay tuned. Also hopeful that they get the new IMAX laser projection system. read more

It's the real deal IMAX! Don't think you've seen IMAX when you go to a regular theater and the movie is 'in IMAX. Saw Interstellar here today, and in the past a documentary. Seats are a bit narrow and close together but other theater standards, but wow what an immersive experience! read more

Very nice IMAX theater and probably the best one in Michigan. The movies they show here are family friendly blockbusters or educational films, so you don't have to worry if you bring your children here. Parking is separated from the Greenfield Village/Museum area, so you won't have to compete with tourists for spots. read more

Huge screen - bigger than local IMAX screens, great sound system. Not perfect though - the seating in the Ypsi IMAX theater is still better. (Ypsi theater has newer, nicer seats. Ypsi theater also has awesome aisle space, so people can exit the aisle without having to disturb the entire row of people. The Henry Ford aisles are just typical 'knock everyones knees and get a butt in the face as they walk by' aisles.) Snack selection is also pretty limited at Henry Ford. But overall for viewing experience it's still worth the trip, especially for 3D. FYI - they only start seating 10 minutes before movie time, and contrary to what they say on their website - they DO let people in after the movie has started, at least they did when I was there (wish they didn't because it's a little disruptive since entrance is right in the front of the theater). read more

Saw Ironman 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness here. Very comfy seats. Also, the concession prices are very good! Worth the trip to see.

Wow, the screen here is really big. The sound and picture quality was great!! Seats are also pretty comfy. However, it does kind of weird me out that they give you the 3D glasses out of a rack & you turn them back into a bucket...who knows if they are really cleaned well. Germaphobes bring antimicrobial wipes just in case. Plus I agree with David, about the draw back of the line to enter & for concessions. It is a nice facility otherwise though. Plus, it's great that you can pop into the museum or the gift shop after the movie. I would go back here to see a movie any day. read more

Went to see Secret Ocean last night. The IMAX screen was huge and it was nice to see how the IMAX screen worked. The staff was friendly despite how busy it was. The reason it got three stars was the air conditioning was out. I got dehydrated and almost passed out. I hope they get the A/C working! read more

Not so much a review, but an answer to a question about the 3D glasses. For those worried whether they are cleaned, the simple answer is YES. They are collected after each show (in the large bins, which are easier for the staff to carry), at which point the staff take them to a room specifically designed for cleaning and storing the glasses. They are racked by size and run through what looks much like an industrial dishwasher. The glasses are cleaned and sanitized in the machine and then the trays are placed back into the large rolling racks for storage. If a guest exchanges their glasses for a different pair (wrong size) the original pair are not put back in the rack until they have been cleaned. Hope that helps! read more
