The Guglie is the water taxi stop to explore the Venetian Ghetto. The word ghetto is derived from the Jewish ghetto in Venice. The Venetian Ghetto was instituted in 1516 by decree of the Venetian Senate. In 1555, Venice had 160,208 residents, including 923 Jews, who were primarily merchants.
In 1797, Napoleon Bonaparte, occupied Venice & forced the Venetian Republic to dissolve. The Ghetto is now the center of Jewish life in the city. Today the Jewish community of Venice is very expensive & only about 450 culturally active live in the Ghetto.
Inside is a plaque in remembrance of lives lost during the holocaust, a synagogue, yeshiva, a Chabad, Judaica shops & restaurants. Annually, a sukkah is built on a canal boat that tours the city, a large menorah also tours the city on a canal boat during Hanukkah.
Many famous figures lived on the Ghetto. It was often referred in fiction. Ex. Shakespeare's Shylock in The Merchant of Venice. read more
