Was in town for the Miami Marathon and our coach, who grew up in the area, suggested we do a shakeout/pre-race run through his hometown - this is something we do in historically Black neighborhoods in NYC anyway, so it was a no-brainer. For me, as I usually stay in South Beach but was anxious to stay in a 'real' part of Miami this go-around, staying nearby and running through Little Haiti and Liberty City was perfect. The people here are really cool. We met one of the main mural artists from the area (see pics) when we were warming up, chatted with the people at the cultural center, ran through the neighborhood (where you don't see Black people, or anyone really, running/jogging) where we were warmly greeted by multiple pedestrians and drivers blowing their horns in support, and finished at the Toussaint L'Ouverture memorial statue, which is both modest and epic. That night, we made it back to Cafe Creole for dinner, which had the best Haitian food I've ever tasted, though I wish they sold sides of black rice. Nonetheless, their food made me wish I ate animal flesh! Also, the best pikliz I've ever had (though very spicy!). Can't wait to return.

That may have not been…read moreas welcoming or appealing as other touristic destinations since they were not the initial target markets. But Little Haiti is undergoing a burgeoning cultural change that is certain to appeal to many tourist. Young Haitian professionals are beginning to start businesses which will give tourists a truly cultural experience similar to that of Little Havana. Some interesting places to visit at the present are The Little Haiti Cultural Center, Libreri Mapou, Chez Le Bebe, Haitian Art Factory, Leelas Restaurant, 1804 ink, Pack Supermarket, Notre Dame D'Haiti, New Florida Bakery, Toussaint Louverture Statue, Little Haiti Soccer Park, Yeelen Gallery, Haitian Arts Alliance, Little Haiti thrift and gift store to name a few. In the past Little Haiti was not a very safe place but it is much safer now.
