After finding out about this farmstand and a little about the history of the owner a few years ago…read moreon social media, I've been wanting to stop by. I finally had a chance this summer on a day off to take the 40 minute drive and check it out. I was not disappointed. This is a small but year-round farm stand right off the side of the road with gravel space for cars to park. It is not greatly protected from the elements--and it was a hot hot day. I'm glad to see they at least had a few fans for the employees. The owner regularly works her stand, and when I was there, she offered to cut some fresh herbs or flowers for me while I perused the wonderful assortment of fruits, veggies and local honey. I ended up with some of the sweetest green grapes I've ever tried, a few different honeys to try (avocado and orange blossom), some freshly roasted peanuts, cucumbers, and an assortment of stone fruit. Everything was delicious, but the grapes were my favorite. Check out Sweet Girl Farms on Social media, or check out their website. They are active in the community, help to support other community growers (they even have eggs and other offerings), and enjoy a worthwhile visit to what should soon obtain the title of local treasure. I may not be able to stop by every week, but I hope to be a several times a year regular. This place is wonderful!

Good paychecks, but really REALLY long hours. I worked at Gerawan Farming in Reedley a few summers…read moreago and it was worth it because I saved up to buy my SLR camera in about two weeks, but the hours were so long that I was just too tired to do anything by the time I came home. So, I pretty much would work and sleep and work and sleep. Employees would usually work six days a week (and sometimes seven) and up to fourteen hours a day. It was insane, but I guess that's what comes with working in a factory. Most of the employee's didn't mind the hours and days, but these were people who had families to feed. The managers were pretty chill and friendly, but there was always drama going on between the female employees (which place doesn't have this!).

I.e., different hybrid. Oh, and in my opinion, as a consumer I feel the fancy boxed peaches displaying an employees picture, name and file number is not appropriate and should be nixed. In fact, the entire Walmart packaging concept is a waste of your money and resources

This low key stand at the Saturday Ferry Farmers Market is one of my go-to when they are there…read more There are in the back lot area closer to the water normally in the center area. They are a seasonal vendor at this market, here mainly during the stone fruits and grape seasons. At the peak of summer, I really enjoyed their nectarines which were extremely sweet. Rebecca always made me smile when I paid her... gee, did I really say that?! With the shelter in place on, she almost exclusively works the cashier while the other guys put customers' orders together. Michael has been extremely helpful knowing my demanding requirements in picking my family's fruits. My favorite this summer has been their champagne grapes (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=gDqCSCj7WiiOiZG6x4YSaA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); it only lasted three weeks, but, boy oh boy, were they good. Their white and yellow nectarines () are not very large in size, but, in flavor, they really come up big in being sweet. I bought some flame grapes () and fantasy grapes (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=-dFxTB01kRS9V8ssKhnDvg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) the past couple of weeks which were very good too. Stop by here if you enjoy grapes and stone fruits (plums, pluots, etc). You won't be disappointed.

The answer to the question? I had to…read more The question? Why would anyone in their right mind be driving out in the crudely paved back roads outside of Fresno. I am assuming you think it's incomprehensible. It was 100 degree plus weather in August! Based on a tip from another local fruit grower, we weaved zig zag through country roads lined with fruit orchards and occasional farm houses. GPS was our guide. And then we saw it. A dusty driveway. A modest home. A small, unmanned fruit stand shaded by a bright red pop-up. A table set up with wooden crates filled with plump, freshly picked peaches, nectarines, and plums, labeled with homemade signs. A stack of brown paper bags, just big enough to hold maybe 6 peaches, each the size of your fist. And a crusty, homemade lock box with a slot on top. In the background was a packing house and an orchard. This is a DIY operation. You don't get to pre-taste their offerings, but you do get to "cherry pick". And what you do get are beautiful, tree ripened stone fruit at prices that are far better than most. You are on the honor system here, so if you are seduced by the siren call for peak season, fresh fruit, be considerate. Pop the correct number of bills in the slot before you walk away. You will be rewarded. And you will look forward to the next time, doing the exact same thing.

As crazy as it may sound, I took my family on a day trip from Los Angeles to get some farm-fresh…read morepeaches choosing not to visit any of the Southern California farms because I wanted to get to the REAL source of the MOST delicious fruit - FRESNO! I selected Friesen Farm because of their informative website and helpfulness over the phone. Coming from a long ways, I was unsure if they would have any peaches left so I was very glad to reserve an order by phone. When I arrived 4 hours later (cell signal was solid the entire way so you can't get lost), a modest crowd was there and the Friesen team was hard at work fulfilling their orders. I saw them pack boxes of nectarines, peaches, and plums by hand (COVID precautions prevented us customers from selecting our own). While waiting, I saw my order (3 bags) were ready for pick up, but the irresistible smell of their fruit compelled me to purchase more (I had to make the 250 mile drive worthwhile, right?). The associate (owner?) who was helping me assured me that it was no trouble to return all the fruit from my previous order and pack the boxes I wanted to take home. While packing my boxes, we engaged in some small talk and she convinced me that I must return late February to see the blossoms. By the look in her eye, and the excitement in her voice I could tell that it was a must-see spectacle so I hope she remembers me when I come back in 2021! But something makes me think I will be back before then to get more fruit here. Now the fruit is indescribably delicious! I could use all the superlatives to describe how tasty they are, but it's exactly like when you say, "The pictures don't do it justice; you just have to be there to believe it." when sharing your vacation photos. They are juicy, fragrant, and sweet as candy. As she packed my boxes, she made sure there was a fair mixture of ready-to-eat fruit and some that would ripen in 2-4 days. That was such a thoughtful gesture that made me feel respected. It should be noted that none of the fruit I purchased were organic. Not sure if they offer any, but that might be something that matters to you. Also, I did not see any restrooms but they could be available. The parking lot was small (maybe 4-6 cars), and there's no gift shop or attractions here: You're here for the fruit. Lastly, I must say that their prices are VERY fair. If I was a Fresno or Tulare County resident, I would be a regular customer because I couldn't imagine paying more for less quality fruit from the supermarkets. I'm not comfortable sharing their prices here in this review because it may be market-dependent (and they don't list them on their website), so contact them and don't be surprised if you buy more than what you planning to. We all gotta support our local farmers!

Sadly, everything I brought home was bruised and deteriorated quickly because of the bruises. A woman at the stand offered to select the items and I trusted she would choose good ones. Tomatoes, yellow peaches and yellow nectarines. She told me that the peaches and nectarines needed a few days to ripen but the first I ate unripe because I could see it wouldn't last with the bruising, the others had huge dark soft spots by the time they were ripe. Tomatoes were ripe but both had big soft spots. Maybe something unusual happened - I will go back and try again (and select myself).
