The Dalesman Country Inn - A glass of Silver Lake by the roaring fire. Bliss.

This is one of my favourite pubs in the whole entire multiverse. OK, I'm slightly biased in that…read morethe pub is situated in not only a very beautiful part of England but it's also nestled in the postcard-perfect village where my other half grew up (Sedbergh, Cumbria) and therefore I know a few of the freindly faces that frequent the place. However, I think that even those without connections to this breathtakingly stunning part of the world will still enjoy a tipple and some hearty British pub grub at The Dalesman. If you've just had a hike up Sedbergh's atmospheric, bracken-clad fells or visited one of the nearby lakes, this is the ideal venue in which to relax and refuel. It's a popular pub for walkers and you can often see their muddy hiking boots perched on the front doorstep. During the summer months, you can sit on the picnic table-style benches outside, catch some (albeit rare) sunshine and watch the world go by, but I actually prefer The Dalesman in winter when the log burner is roaring, the candles are lit and it's got that unbeatable warm, fuzzy, Christmassy feeling about the place. Food is served all day and the menu offers some excellent choices for all appetites- everything from steak and ale pie, pot roasted brisket, fillet steak and mixed grill planks to Greek mezze platters, pizza, Spanish-style battered whitebait and Thai fish cakes. Check out the Specials board too - there's always something tempting up there and the same goes for the desserts (think chocolate brownies, oozing sticky toffee pudding and the like) Mmmmmm. I've got a bit of a thing for New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs at the moment and thankfully The Dalesman cater for my needs perfectly. However, like most good things in life, it doesn't come cheap. A large glass of Silver Lake, a fragrant Malborough Sauvignon Blanc with a delicious gooseberry aftertaste will set you back a whopping £8, however, I think it's worth every penny. If you're more of a beer person, you can enjoy a number of cask ales and guest beers such as Deuchars IPA, Timothy Taylor, Old Speckled Hen, Hawkshead, Cross Bay Brewery, and Lancaster Brewery. The Dalesman boasts three recently refurbished main dining areas (four if you count outside), all decorated in a modern yet rustic style, which adds to its overall charm. If you're looking to stay overnight, the pub offers accomodation upstairs (four double rooms and a single) plus a seperate cottage with one single room and one double room on the top floor. I thoroughly recommend this cosy country pub to anyone looking for a snug, friendly place in which to wet one's whistle or somewhere to enjoy good food in a truly beautiful setting.

I would say the Pub/Restaurant is more similar to the gastro pubs we have in the states than the English pubs we encountered on our way. The food was very good and very local but also a bit more pricey than one might expect. We both had the special, which was a roast beef dish and it was just fine. I wouldn't call it life changing or anything but definitely a solid meal. There are several good cask ales on tap. I had the Black Sheep, which was the closest to the more hoppy beer I am used to from Colorado. Overall I would give the dining a three stars, for how local everything is supposed to be I would expect to be blown away by the flavor of the ingredients and just wasn't. The room we stayed in was very nice! Apart from not being able to figure out how to get the shower really hot, everything was excellent. Very soft pillows big bed with exposed beams above an a nice view down the lane, both Claire C and I were very happy with our stay. Combining the restaurant with the upstairs rooms makes this place deserve a 4 star rating. Also, tip to those looking for a bit of a cheaper option. Get your pizza to go and it is less than half the price!

It's a great location, just up the road from Ambleside. The Inn is quaint, charming, and comfortable and the staff are kind, welcoming and accommodating! We arrived and were immediately happy with the safe and private parking accommodations. We actually arrived very late that evening, and called ahead, they waited up for us and were so kind upon arrival. The Hotel is SO charming, cute and cozy. The aesthetic is charming English cottage, while also being updated and feeling clean. The hotel rooms themselves are more modern (though unique) to give you all of the comforts of home - my fave being the towel warmer. Our room was wonderfully clean (and I'm a stickler on cleanliness!) and the bed was so comfortable, especially after a long drive. It was such a comfortable and clean place to lay our heads for the evening. The hotel has a restaurant that I would also recommend. Breakfast was incredible - one of the first hotel breakfasts where I haven't had to douse in pepper haha. Well seasoned and well cooked, high quality ingredients. Jonathan is a wonderful chef. My husband said the hollandaise was one of the best he's ever had. I'd recommend stopping by for sure, and don't miss breakfast! The hotel is also very unique in that they have local goods/art around the hotel, both as decor and for sale. Such a sweet touch. We bought one of Caroline's paintings - she's multi talented! Overall, I would stay here again. 10/10!!

After a train ride from London, we checked in and were immediately escorted to our rooms. It is a gorgeous, well appointed, old white cottage with seemingly unending English charm. The room included a queen bed with comfortable linens, en suite bath with a standup shower, in-room toiletries, coffee/tea service, and incredible views of the town of Windermere. Overall, it was very well appointed with modern features throughout. For dinner, we enjoyed the restaurant's evening special of sirloin and chips. We ordered it medium rare and it came cooked to medium. Prior to that we broke from English tradition, and ordered a very nice fruit & cheese plate for an appetizer. At the end of the meal, their sticky toffee pudding was quite rich and among the top four I've had in my life. They have a very lovely outdoor setting, complete with comfortable tables, that allow for glorious views of Windermere, both the town and the body of water. Angel Inn also has a guest lounge area, with comfortable sofas and chairs that allow you to warm yourself by their wood burning fireplace. It is within easy walking distance to the post office, co-op, Laundrette, and mere. It is a 1.6 mile walk, all downhill, from the Windermere train station. There are also bus routes to take you into town.

What these petty crooks did is took advantage of my train cancellation - charged me the no show fee for the whole period of stay and cancelled my booking. When I arrived the next day they said my reservation is not valid anymore, and I have to pay for the next night again. Even if this policy allows that, the behaviour of the hotel was dishonest and unethical, basically, they behaved like thieves. Avoid by all means! Especially since train cancellations are frequent in the UK. None of the other hotels behaved like that, in most cases I received the full refund. There are many much better hotels in Kendal.

My room had the most spectacular views out over the river too. The bed was huge and was like sleeping on clouds ... It was incredibly comfortable and I had the best sleep I've had in ages. The bathroom was rrally nuce although the toilet is a little weird, almost like a children's toilet but hey it does the job. The bath was luxurious too though for some reason I couldn't get cold water to come out as hard as I tried it just flooded out boiling water. That's probably just me not knowing which way to turn the tap though. There is a leisure centre with a gym, swimming pool, sauna, spa and steam room that is open to guests so don't forget your swimmers (like I did). Reception staff were friendly and welcoming. I'd forgotten my toothbrush but they handily had bathroom essentials for purchase. The restaurant is very nice with plenty of options. I only had the chips as I have a lot of food allergies but the chips were delicious. Chunky and crunchy. The only thing I didn't appreciate was house keeping entering the room at 9 am when I was still asleep. They should probably wait until people have checked out, or at least until later in the morning. Overall, I had a great stay and I'd happily return.

The bed was very comfortable and we really appreciated the high ceilings, beautiful grounds, and enjoyed our walks around the estate. If you're working like we were, note that the internet is indeed fast enough for a developer who runs team meetings to lead all their meetings! I had a spa session with massage and facial and it was excellent! I swam every day and used the sauna facilities. The locker room and pool area was kept very clean and dry. The lady attendant was fastidious in keeping the changing room dry and clean. There was a bit of an incident where one of my favorite vintage pieces I sent off to laundry was not returned to us when they dropped off our clean clothes. I had actually been at the entrance to the hotel when the cleaner dropped it off and I verbally acknowledged to her that I could see my laundry because of my vintage piece and she stated they'd be delivered to my room shortly. Front staff sent back an empty hanger amongst our other clean clothes and had lost it. We found it on the floor amongst boxes behind the reception desk. They returned my item, and apologized personally. Not a big deal and glad it was resolved.

In other words, our first night was not very restful! Sure that the hotel can't do anything about this, however some pro active compensation would have been in order. The downside of this hotel is the aggressive pricing for wedding packages, meaning that there are many wedding parties going on. I counted six in two days, which brings a lot of drunkards to the hotel, which does not help if you're seeking a quite place to relax. Will I ever get back to this hotel, no.
