This is one of my favourite pubs in the whole entire multiverse. OK, I'm slightly biased in that…read morethe pub is situated in not only a very beautiful part of England but it's also nestled in the postcard-perfect village where my other half grew up (Sedbergh, Cumbria) and therefore I know a few of the freindly faces that frequent the place. However, I think that even those without connections to this breathtakingly stunning part of the world will still enjoy a tipple and some hearty British pub grub at The Dalesman.
If you've just had a hike up Sedbergh's atmospheric, bracken-clad fells or visited one of the nearby lakes, this is the ideal venue in which to relax and refuel. It's a popular pub for walkers and you can often see their muddy hiking boots perched on the front doorstep. During the summer months, you can sit on the picnic table-style benches outside, catch some (albeit rare) sunshine and watch the world go by, but I actually prefer The Dalesman in winter when the log burner is roaring, the candles are lit and it's got that unbeatable warm, fuzzy, Christmassy feeling about the place.
Food is served all day and the menu offers some excellent choices for all appetites- everything from steak and ale pie, pot roasted brisket, fillet steak and mixed grill planks to Greek mezze platters, pizza, Spanish-style battered whitebait and Thai fish cakes. Check out the Specials board too - there's always something tempting up there and the same goes for the desserts (think chocolate brownies, oozing sticky toffee pudding and the like) Mmmmmm.
I've got a bit of a thing for New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs at the moment and thankfully The Dalesman cater for my needs perfectly. However, like most good things in life, it doesn't come cheap. A large glass of Silver Lake, a fragrant Malborough Sauvignon Blanc with a delicious gooseberry aftertaste will set you back a whopping £8, however, I think it's worth every penny. If you're more of a beer person, you can enjoy a number of cask ales and guest beers such as Deuchars IPA, Timothy Taylor, Old Speckled Hen, Hawkshead, Cross Bay Brewery, and Lancaster Brewery.
The Dalesman boasts three recently refurbished main dining areas (four if you count outside), all decorated in a modern yet rustic style, which adds to its overall charm. If you're looking to stay overnight, the pub offers accomodation upstairs (four double rooms and a single) plus a seperate cottage with one single room and one double room on the top floor.
I thoroughly recommend this cosy country pub to anyone looking for a snug, friendly place in which to wet one's whistle or somewhere to enjoy good food in a truly beautiful setting.
