I went to Gents one time, and that is all I will be going. I had asked for a trim on the sides and barely anything off the top. A simple haircut. She took the liberty of chopping my hair off. When I said to her she was cutting way too much off, she told me that I was wrong and that I needed to wait for her to finish. I have asked for pretty much the same, simple haircut my entire life. I have no idea what the other reviewer is talking about. Both my son and I have been coming here for a year and we both feel they're the best haircuts we ever had. All of the barbers are extremely experienced -- I recommend Jose, but everyone seems to be good. Also, if you have them trim your beard, they'll spend twenty minutes on it for $16, which is actually a deal. Yes, the haircuts cost $26 -- I used to pay more for haircuts at salons that were never this good. read more

I live in the neighborhood and have walked passed this barber shop many times since its opening. Finally I decided to give it a try and scheduled a last minute appointment at 8am right before work. Jose took my appointment and its been 2 months now and I haven't even thought of trying any other place out. Jose is fantastic. He is professional, skilled and cuts my hair exactly how I want it every single time. Not to mention he's also a real cool dude. Beware of scam pricing... I visited the shop during lunch asked for a beard trim which had a posted price of $16. After getting just that when I went to pay the barber and the owner's wife had a private conversation and they determined my bill to be $38. Upon asking them why so much they mentioned they used a razor and the barber "fixed it" ... no further explanation. I told them I had only asked for a beard trim but the only response I got was that it would be $38, end of story. I followed up noting that they did have a price for a beard trim and shave of $32, again I questioned why that wasnt the price, assuming they had taken it upon themselves to add a service I didn' t want, but again response I got was that it would be $38. All said I am quite disappointed that things turned out they way they did, I generally get a weekly beard trim in the winter and thought this could my new spot... read more

when i first moved to the UES i tried every barbershop in a ten block radius, probably visiting close to 8 or 9 barbershops. it wasn't until i found gents that i stopped looking. that first time i walked in off the street and they really nailed what i wanted, and even exceeded my expectations. have never had a bad haircut. it's been almost two years and i refuse to go anywhere else. i'm not going to say who my barber is because he books up pretty fast and i dont want to have to compete with you for an appointment, but they're all very good. read more

Ok, so I was looking forward to checking out this place since i walked by it a few weeks ago. I have been trying to find a good barber for a while and while i was pretty happy with the $12 cut i got on 89th street, I felt like i could use something a step up. I came on a saturday morning around 10am because I had a bunch of errands to run. I was seated immediatle and sat in the chair for the next 35 minutes petrified how my haircut was going to turn out. I felt like i may have been the guys first haircut as he agressively banged his buzzer against my head. The haircut ended up coming out a complete mess, and not what I asked for. With no shampoo, shave, hot towel, or any other frill, I was absolutely astonished to be charged $30 for what was my worst haircut since moving to New York City. For not much more than $30 you can get a haircut from John Allans or Spiff that will leave you much happier. read more

I had a great experience at Gents. Jose gave me one of the best haircuts I've had in years. I'm highly fastidious about who I allow to touch my beautiful locks, so I made the decision to venture into Gents with much trepidation. In fact, it wasn't until one day that I walked by and recognized one of the stars from the barbershop I frequent further down the road (who had apparently defected) that it even occurred to me to try something new. The vibe: I waltz in there around three on the day of Christmas eve with no appointment and am instantly accommodated by a friendly fellow (Jose). I have a seat and start to take in the environment. First, the aforementioned star of the other barber definitely defected and I reckon she is now the proprietor of Gents. I recognized a lot of the kitsch in Gents from that other barbershop I normally frequent that is further down on Lex (HINT: its name rhymes with pork). It is a tasteful amount of kitsch, though, and the joint maintains a very light, roomy, clean and cozy interior: It's practically sterile compared to the TGIFriday's level of clutter and gimcrack with which a lot of barbers adorn their shops. There was a fun amount of banter going on in the shop, and it never got overwhelming or annoying. I had some solid small talk with Jose, but always plenty of quiet time (the barbershop is where I like to do some of my best ruminating). The cut: Awesome. I gave Jose pretty specific instructions ("I part it this way and like it longer on the top, shorter on the sides"), with a dollop of ambiguity ("Long on top and short on the sides seems pretty hip, I'd like something pretty hip, but not too hip for the office"), and like a true, mind-reading artiste, Jose delivered. I knew we were in the clear when, off the bat, he went with the scissors and not the electric clippers (which he used only to freshen up the back of the neck and the sideburns - Respect). Also, a noteworthy occurrence during the cut was that some dude off the street came in and bigged-up Jose - "You're nice with those scissors!" Indeed he was. The sticker price for the cut was $28, which, in my experience, is a totally competitive and reasonable price for the 'hood and the quality of the experience. read more

Once a month I get my haircut and I have tried a number of places in the city but no place is as consistent as Gents New York. It is a very professional barber shop and I always walk out looking good. My brother-in-laws go to Gents as well and all of our experiences have been more than excellent. Since my late teens I had my hair cut by "stylists" at salons. My hair was longer then and it had been my experience that barbers were capable of only one style--short and crisp. Never liked the shampoo before the cut routine at all salons (nor did I like being surrounded by women looking like Medusa with strips of aluminum foil in their hair). So when I started asking for a shorter cut I began looking for a barber shop with a skilled barber. Not easy to find. A shop on Lexington with an olde world wooden interior caught my attention but an occasional glimpse in the window led me to believe the barbers were also the olde world variety. One day I walked inside asked one barber a question and the barber at the next chair immediately answered it. I took his next appointment. He turned out to be a pro and soon opened his own shop at Lexington and 81st. Nothing worse than a bad haircut and I have sympathy for Bill W. above. But with Luis and Gents I've consistently been more than satisfied. My only hesitation about writing this review is that it may be more difficult in the future to schedule an appointment given his usually very full schedule. read more

I have no idea what Bill is talking about, but this place is the only babershop I will go to in NYC. I first went there when I lived on the UES, and now that I live downtown, I will still take the subway all the way uptown to go here...in fact, my friend who has since moved to Long Island and works in the financial district, still only gets his hair cut here. This is by far the best barbershop I've ever been to. The owner/head barber is not only one of the nicest, most personable guys I know, he gives a perfect haircut every time. I sit down, he says "the usual?", I confirm, and 15-20 minutes later I leave with a perfectly cut head of hair. He uses buzzers and sizzors, and a straight razor on the back of your neck and even around your ears (I've never been even so much as nicked in 3 years), and he's a master of his craft. They also do straight razor shaves, which I've not yet done, and manicures while you get your hair cut, but not my thing, so I cant speak to the quality. Another friend of mine who lives in the area goes to a different barber at Gents, and he has nothing but good things to say about his as well. So, while I would hate to see it become even more difficult to get an appointment, the injustice of a sole 1 star review requires I tell you that this is a phenomenal barbershop, run by a great guy, with excellent service and fair prices.
