My hair was getting long and I really wanted to keep it cleaned up and looking nice. I've been asking friends for recs but all their barbers have been their barbers for years and they live in the Bronx or (gasp) Jersey. Convenience is important and I should have taken the cue from the girl putting in weave for a client. Me: I just need a hair trim and shape up. Her: The person is not here right now who usually ... (Looks at Morgada) You wanna do it? Morgada: What did you need again? It seemed like it was going ok and she had some challenges setting up. I should've got up from the chair like my friends told me they often do without remorse but I stayed. And I posted a picture of how it all turned out. It's one of those things you can't really do anything about but wait it out until your hair is trimming length. It's my own fault. I'm sure it could've been fine here with someone with more experience or a clear line of sight. I don't know. I also feel bad because I tipped 20% and didn't take the time to give her feedback. Maybe like me it was her first time doing this. I didn't know what to look for until I got home and held my phone up to the back of my head to inspect in the bathroom mirror and saw that it was obviously just poor shaping. If you do try out the unbelievable stylists here just don't get what I had.

This salon is great but the only reason why I am a client is due to one person: my colorist, Rosemary (okay, secret is out and yes, I get highlights). I've been seeing Rosemary for more years than I will reveal, and she's not only a great colorist, but she feels like family. In addition to being a great colorist, she will truly listen to your hair concerns and is always willing to make any changes or adjustments. I've driven her mad through the years with my fickleness regarding desired shade. It probably seems like this review is about Rosemary--and maybe it is since I would follow her anywhere--but overall, the salon has a great crew of colorists and hairstylists. The front desk staff is also very welcoming and accommodating. Works for me.

I have had many haircuts from many different stylists and barbers, and this place tops all the rest. Nested privately in a sleek building lobby on Park Ave, you already feel like a million bucks upon entering. The salon caters to men ranging from a regular wash-and-go type of guy to the businessmen working in midtown who need a bit of trimming during their lunch break. There are only two stalls, and each stall is private. The experience between the two barbers adds up to possibly more than 40 years, and it shows. By appointment only. The receptionist is very friendly, and the barbers are the ones who wash your hair also. You're never really told how much to pay, and you're treated like a Renaissance man every time you sit. There is always great conversation to be had with the barber, and you leave the place feeling great and not worrying about how your hair looks. The barber also gives great tips on how to manage your hair. I don't like getting haircuts often, so he catered to that need and my hair has never looked and felt healthier after following his advice. I'll go back for more!

But where the rubber meets the road -- the haircut. Excellent. The best I've had in years (and with my thinning hair it gets harder for the barber as time goes on). Highly recommend. A haircut, including wash, condition, cut, massage is $70. A lot of money, but I have a feeling I'm not going to need another cut for some time. That's the mark of a good cut, to me: how long before I have to do it again. Highly recommend. Also, my son highly recommends but he's too busy to write a review.

And I fully realize that the only reason that I can save coin on haircuts by doing it myself is that a baldy isn't hard to fashion. Get two mirrors and a good clipper, and you're golden. That's if you have a sexy head like mine. Anywho.... this is the first place in the new neighborhood that I've visited for a styling. You see the new digs up in the Bronx isn't really accommodating for the cutting of one's own hair. And this way I can spend clean up time on other things. From the first time I stepped in the place I was made to feel welcome. And the wait might be a bit sometimes, especially when you decide to wait for the dude who you exclusively want giving you a cut. But in that wait time is the traditional comradery. I rarely write bad review when I am unhappy with a service, as long as attempts to make amends are…read moremade. However, I chose to write this due to Carlos' complete and total lack of compassion or willingness to apologize for how devastated I am. First off, it is clear that Carlos is good at cutting curly hair, but he is TERRIBLE at listening to or taking feedback from his customers. If you don't know what you want, or you don't already know how to deal with your curls Carlos might be the guy for you. But if you have something specific in mind I suggest going to someone who will care to make sure you are happy (and spend more than ten seconds looking at the pictures you bring). I specifically asked him to look at previous pictures of my hair, and examples of what I wanted, so that I could get back to the shape I had earlier before an unfortunate haircut in January (was totally doable, and very simple). Rather than taking the time to look, he glanced at the picture and told me to 'move on from my old hair' and work with what we have, and dismissd the pictures of the '90210' girl (his words, not mine) that I was showing him as an example of SHAPE not STYLE. He seems more interested in telling you what you're doing "wrong" and teaching you how to style your hair the "right" way, than actually delivering the shape you ask for. He styled me with clips, which i would never do, as i really dislike that look and left me under the dryer. When I left i couldn't see the shape due to the massive amounts of gel and the weird height at the roots. I came back a couple hours later after it "settled" and it was clear that I did not get what I asked for. I asked for a nice, subtle angle and I ended up with square top and a rattail hanging in the back, sadly all that is left of my length. Once hair is cut there's no going back, but a simple "I'm sorry" is more than sufficient to make amends when a customer is in tears, there's absolutely no need for rudeness or egoism. He offered to cut more to achieve the shape I asked for, which is the last thing in the world I need to grow my hair out. He then became angry (took a moment to take deep breaths to calm himself) as I fought back tears of anger and humiliation. I wish I was not so naive to believe that paying 140 dollars for a haircut would mean that my stylist would care more about my feelings than his ego, in fact it was the opposite. Really sad and disappointed, mostly about the rude reaction to my tears. I'm sure once I get over it I'll be more upset about the haircut that will be with me for a good long while. For reference: I have been a curly girl since 2011, have gotten some great curly haircuts (and some really bad ones) so I'm definitely not a newbie to the dry cut game. Carlos knows how to cut curly hair, but that's not of much use if you end up with a mullet of perfect curls. .
