I saw Dr. Dawn C. Knapton at the Yale Therapy Group back in the Spring and I strongly, strongly…read moreadvise against it. On her website she states she works with PTSD but when I told her I feel that's what I'm experiencing, she told me she didn't know anything about it and pulled a DSM off the shelf and read the definition out loud. Wracked with sobs, I told her about the experiences I've suppressed that meet the criteria for PTSD, along with all of the symptoms I've experienced. She passed off events like a head-on collision while traveling alone in Indonesia and having someone try to strangle me on the job as insufficiently traumatic. When I told her I was raped when I was 17 and never allowed myself to acknowledge it, she told me "not all rapes are that traumatic". I also tried to express how travel has been a trauma for me- I spent a whole year traveling, alone, as an attractive white woman, off the beaten path in Africa. Dr. Knapton told me she has a friend who travels and "she knows what it's like" with a wink. Instead of listening to what the experience was really like for me, she kept asking if I'd had any consensual romantic affairs (even if I did, I fail to see how that would cancel out the impact of being unsafe for a whole year, groped several times every day, robbed, arrested, going hungry). I told her about a time when I was in a refugee camp in Ethiopia, 6 months into traveling alone. It was 50 degrees, I had a military escort because it was a disputed zone with rebels. I went walking around and some young boys came running up to meet me. One, around 12 years old, grabbed my boobs, then they all ran away. To this, Dr. Knapton told me- "You're a very beautiful woman, there's a certain amount of sexual assault you're going to have to get used to." She also said an experience that like can't have impacted me because circumstances and location don't matter. I am worse for having seen Dr. Knapton. If you're suffering from PTSD or C-PTSD, please go somewhere else.
