She refused to refill it, refused to offer a taper, refused to provide a referral, and wouldn't even write a short bridge prescription to keep me safe while I searched for care. Instead, she handed me a flyer with a link to Psychology Today and wished me luck. That's not medical care. That's abandonment. Cold-stopping a benzo isn't just inconsiderate, it's dangerous. For some patients, it can lead to seizures, hospitalization, or worse. And for those of us on Medicaid, finding a new provider can take weeks to months. You don't get to just shrug and walk away from your patient when they're in a high-risk situation you helped create. I went home and had to call the crisis hotline because I was convinced she'd written my epitaph in advance. Mental health care requires empathy, accountability, and actual follow-through.
