"Genova Bakery" has been a staple bakery/delicatessen for residents in the Stockton and greater San Joaquin County area dating way back to 1918. Located directly at the corner of N. Sierra Nevada and E. Flora St. in the heart of downtown Stockton, this place is absolutely nostalgic from the outside with its classic signage, green entrance door, and a true Italian feeling as soon as you arrive. I absolutely love when small family owned-and-operated businesses retain that look as it keeps the tradition and heritage alive and well. I came here with my lady during the afternoon on Saturday 8/22/2026 at around 2:00pm. Parking was surprisingly easy to find as the surrounding area has an abundance of mid-century homes. Upon entry, you are greeted with the aroma of freshly baked bread, well-stocked aisles of cookies, jams/jellies, homemade pastas, olive oils, sauces, spices, wines, and even their own merchandise that includes t-shirts, mugs, and other unique items. Much of the Italian groceries are similar to what you'd find in a bigger city like San Francisco. The real winner here are the sandwiches. During their regular business hours which are 6:30am-4pm during the week and 6:30am-2:30 on Saturday, they have multiple employees rolling out a wide variety of their award-winning sandwiches. They carry some of the best Italian cold cuts including Hot Coppa, Mortadella, Prosciutto, and Pancetta. And when you pair that up with some amazing cheeses on their own warm Genova bread, that is an ultimate combination. Since we had come a little bit later in the day, much of the homemade breads were sold out. However, we did purchase a loaf of their milk bread which we used for sandwiches and even French toast for breakfast. Keep in mind that they are closed on Sunday. However, if you come for a sandwich, you might experience a little bit of a wait during their lunch rush. But the good news is that the prices here are very reasonable at only $10 for a fully loaded sandwich (which is less than many grocery store delis). All in all, this was a very pleasant surprise as I had never stepped foot into this small business until 2026. With excellent service, decent prices, but a smaller amount of baked goods than other bakeries, I am giving "Genova Bakery" an above average four-star rating. read more

Finally decided to visit this Stockton staple and boy am I glad I did. Let's dive in... Ambiance - This is a corner market with Italian items and the big draw is their sandwich counter. You walk in, fill out a form with what type of sandwich you want, hand it to a person when you're called, and then wait for your name to be called. Service - The staff were friendly, so no complaints here. Food - The food is great! I ordered a combo sandwich with turkey, hot salami, and jalapeño/cayenne cheddar and all the fixins and it was delicious! The Dutch crunch roll was tasty and it was a hearty sandwich! Honestly I'm so sad that I'm barely trying Genova for the first time since I am a Stockton native and my grandpa loved this place while I was growing up and I can see why. They really brought a fresh taste to Stockton and it sure needs a little Italian culture there lol. I have been to both New York and Italy so I have a lot to compare to and I really loved this place. Lots of fresh meat and the sandwiches are so good, the cannoli is also fresh and really good as well. Definitely going to go back again. Service was a little slow but in fairness they did have a long line, ambiance was very old Italian deli vibe. I wouldn't say Italy but I would say it's more leaving towards Brooklyn vibes. read more

Been coming here for years. Love thee product and fresh bread. But today was upsetting. Walked in and was waiting in line waiting to be help. Nobody greeted us or even acknowledged us. There was a couple that was being rung out. We were next in line to be helped and that same cashier with the red hair just went to the back. She didn't even tell us she'll be right with us. Just went to the back. Waited a while and then someone finally asked if we were being help. Told them no. Then finally the lady with the red hair came back out. I believe the lady is racist because as soon as someone of her color walked in, she greeted and help them right away. Management really need to talk to her. Train her on her customer service skills that she lack and treat everyone equally. If she's not happy with her job, find a new one. read more

We waited 30 minutes in line to order sandwiches around here around 1pm in the afternoon on a weekday. The line was crazy, so I had high hopes. The sandwiches were ok. I would give them 3/5. We got one regular Toscano salami and pepper jack on a milk roll and a combo mortadella pistachio and pastrami on a sour roll. The difference between one and two meats is only 50 cents but the sandwiches are the same size. That being said, the smoked cheddar bacon potato salad was delicious. Easily 5/5. Amazing flavor and not too heavy on mayo. I highly recommend it. We also got a Stroopwaffle but it had been sitting or the flavor was off, so 2/5 on that. All in all, we paid $35 for lunch for 2 here and it was fine. I think it is just SO overhyped that it's difficult to live up to the expectation. You could just tell the historical ambiance it brings when you first step in the door; after all it's been in existence from more than 100 years. I didn't mind the wait for my sandwiches. I and my brother frequently this bakery for stick of French bread for el cafecito or un chocolate calintito.. anyways fast foward over the yr and this last visit. Two sandwich two chocolate pies, two oranges sodas, two salads and one Italian beer. Service is always great ambiance is what it has been for decades. Genova Bakery is one of those hidden gems that all the locals know about, and that visitors will keep talking about long after they stop by. It's a "little" hole in the wall bakery and shop at the corner of N Sierra Nevada and E Flora St. While the shop up front is pretty small, the bakery in the back is doing a lot of work to prepare amazing fresh bread. Part of the charm is that Genova is in the middle of a neighborhood with houses all around it. Street parking is pretty easy to find, although at peak hours there may be a line out the door. The sandwiches are the must try items, and I recommend getting a combo. They've recently raised prices but it's still a very fair $10 for a regular sandwich and $10.50 for a combo (plus a few options to add extras like pickles or Bruno peppers). If you're ordering a sandwich, you'll want to fill out the sandwich form. My favorite combination is hot coppa, hot salami, on ciabatta with havarti cheese, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, add bruno peppers and write in oil+vinegar. They have a great variety of bread options, cold cuts and cheese and everyone is able to make a combination that fits their preferences. Their pasta salads are delicious. It's often something I skip on, and then when I order it again I remember why I should order it every time- such a great side with a sandwich. While you're waiting for your sandwiches, you can browse the shelves for sweet treats, ingredients, sauces, peppers, wine and of course their fresh breads. I typically pick up some nippy Bruno Peppers (they're delicious and local) and a loaf of bread. If you're planning a large order or are coming during a busy time you can call in your order ahead of time. Looks can be deceiving; the place is a little old-school style deli and is a historic landmark location in Stockton (over 100 years old I believe). I ordered a turkey and salami sandwich with everything on it. I went during lunch time and there were a lot of other customers but there was also a lot of staff working so getting my sandwich order was pretty quick (took about 5 mins total). My first thought after I picked up my order was 'dang this sandwich seems a little small' but it was actually pretty hearty of a sandwich! They definitely packed it with a lot of meat and all the ingredients were very fresh (I can easily taste the fresh veggies). I was a little stuffed after eating the first half and was considering saving the rest for later, but it was too good that I didn't want to save it lol. I was in Stockton for work and had bookmarked Genova Bakery as a potential lunch option for my short visit. After hearing some rave reviews from coworkers who lived in the area, my other coworker and I decided to try it out! While we were told it may be busy during lunchtime, we were able to get a parking spot on the street pretty easily and were surprised to find it wasn't too crowded inside. The ordering system is pretty straightforward - there are pads of paper with an order form to indicate your sandwich preferences. Regular sandwiches (one meat and one cheese) are $10 and combos (two meats and one cheese) are $10.50. Once completed, you hand the form to an employee and wait until you're called. Pricing for items by the pound were also listed on the board. I opted for a combo with Cajun turkey and prosciutto with provolone cheese on milk bread with all mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, and onion. I also got a small box of the smoked cheddar and bacon potato salad on the side. While waiting, the market area has a bunch of great items to peruse through, and the bakery itself is abuzz with customers coming in and out to pick up baguettes, order pounds of salami, and place more sandwich orders. The ONLY reason I'm docking a star here is because in my hurry to check out, I didn't realize I had been charged for an extra sandwich.. I tapped my card without reviewing the overall charge (my fault) and I unfortunately didn't look at my receipt until I was home much later in Sacramento. This place is clearly a great neighborhood place for locals. Def old school Italian feel which is a thing I love. I will say, it's not immediately obvious when you walk in what you need to do. You are required to to fill out a sando slip that's just resting on top of a shelf. I figured out after waiting for a bit so I had to lose my place in line to go fill out the slip. They don't really have any curated sandwiches like an Italian combo or anything like that. I went with a mortadella sandwich. It was good. Maybe needed like oil and vinegar but I didn't see an option for that. The sandwich was pretty good. I saw they had some deli sides and one caught my eye: smoked cheddar and bacon potato salad. I wanted that. So I'm assuming that you ask them for it as the slip has absolutely no checkbox or space for this. So as my sandwich is finished and they tell me to pay, I say I want a side of potato salad, please. They tell me if I want it to get back in line, a line which was longer than when I first arrived and took me about 10 minutes to get my sandwich made. Not amazing customer service. Suffice to say, I didn't get any potato salad. So, this place is probably better experience when you're a local and you know all the quirks. Not necessarily friendly to newbies. read more

Finally came to try out this famous local spot milk bread was fresh and soft. Never came so didn't know how to order but seen people when you first walk up writing their order. It's very small in there so not many places to stand. Maybe they should have a how to order and where to stand next. Someone finally said oh don't stand there go behind another guy so make sure to stand to the farthest aisle. Then as you stand by the deli area beware not to stand to close to the counter. A lady was slicing meat and said stand over there they'll call you when you can put your order. Like I said their service could be more friendly. Next someone making your sandwich that's free she was probably the nicest and asked if me and my co worker were together and said she can make our sandwiches! After waiting wasn't sure where to stand so we just waited by the front till our sandwiches were done to pay at the cashier. I found this little corner shop and decided to try it out. You come in and they have a smooth process of ordering your sandwich. Fill out an ordering form to customize your sandwich, wait to be called your turn and pay for your order. That's it! I have my sandwich on a dutch crunch bread (Applewood smoked ham, smoked turkey with provolone) and I loved every bite of it. I saved half for later and decided to toast it and oh boy it was a game changer. They don't skimp on their ingredients and with just half of my sandwich I was full. This place though small have loads of good stuff inside. From dry pastas, to sauces, breads, deli meats, and even dry beans. You can make a whole meal to feed the hungry mouths. It is located in a not so great area in town, off of Airport Way. It is in a residential area surrounded by houses. Very limited street parking. You have to look for the Genova bakery sign so you won't miss it. It is a older building and very small inside. They have several Italian cookies, pasta, and treats. I decided to get the assorted cookies to try them. They are hard type cookies and really good! If you plan to order a sandwich, you have to mark on a pad what you want your sandwich. You stand in line and wait till your turn. You give them the paper and they prepare your sandwich You're kind of standing on the side in the cramped corners until your name is called. They sell soft Genova French loaves. For the large it was $4.25 and the small was $4.00 so go with the large. Sandwiches run about $12-$15 each depending on what you get. I decided to get this month special which was the Turkey Tarentel On a Dutch French bread. I wouldn't do the Dutch crunch bread next time because it is a very messy. Was going to visit daughter and she requested a Genova sandwich. This place has been a family favorite for 40 years. Got there at 9:30am and they had 10 customers in there already.
