Really dating my self here. Later 90s early 2000s . I and my brother frequently this bakery for stick of French bread for el cafecito or un chocolate calintito.. anyways fast foward over the yr and this last visit. Two sandwich two chocolate pies, two oranges sodas, two salads and one Italian beer. Service is always great ambiance is what it has been for decades. Good luck getting a sandwich here if you have a 30 min lunch break. Call in if its possible. Its stay busy even until closing most of the time.

Genova Bakery is one of those hidden gems that all the locals know about, and that visitors will keep talking about long after they stop by. It's a "little" hole in the wall bakery and shop at the corner of N Sierra Nevada and E Flora St. While the shop up front is pretty small, the bakery in the back is doing a lot of work to prepare amazing fresh bread. Part of the charm is that Genova is in the middle of a neighborhood with houses all around it. Street parking is pretty easy to find, although at peak hours there may be a line out the door. The sandwiches are the must try items, and I recommend getting a combo. They've recently raised prices but it's still a very fair $10 for a regular sandwich and $10.50 for a combo (plus a few options to add extras like pickles or Bruno peppers). If you're ordering a sandwich, you'll want to fill out the sandwich form. My favorite combination is hot coppa, hot salami, on ciabatta with havarti cheese, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, add bruno peppers and write in oil+vinegar. They have a great variety of bread options, cold cuts and cheese and everyone is able to make a combination that fits their preferences. Their pasta salads are delicious. It's often something I skip on, and then when I order it again I remember why I should order it every time- such a great side with a sandwich. While you're waiting for your sandwiches, you can browse the shelves for sweet treats, ingredients, sauces, peppers, wine and of course their fresh breads. I typically pick up some nippy Bruno Peppers (they're delicious and local) and a loaf of bread. If you're planning a large order or are coming during a busy time you can call in your order ahead of time. Now that I live farther away I tend to come during the slower times, but I remember the lunch rush and while there's typically a wait it's well worth it.

I was in Stockton for work and had bookmarked Genova Bakery as a potential lunch option for my short visit. After hearing some rave reviews from coworkers who lived in the area, my other coworker and I decided to try it out! While we were told it may be busy during lunchtime, we were able to get a parking spot on the street pretty easily and were surprised to find it wasn't too crowded inside. The ordering system is pretty straightforward - there are pads of paper with an order form to indicate your sandwich preferences. Regular sandwiches (one meat and one cheese) are $10 and combos (two meats and one cheese) are $10.50. Once completed, you hand the form to an employee and wait until you're called. Pricing for items by the pound were also listed on the board. I opted for a combo with Cajun turkey and prosciutto with provolone cheese on milk bread with all mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, and onion. I also got a small box of the smoked cheddar and bacon potato salad on the side. While waiting, the market area has a bunch of great items to peruse through, and the bakery itself is abuzz with customers coming in and out to pick up baguettes, order pounds of salami, and place more sandwich orders. The ONLY reason I'm docking a star here is because in my hurry to check out, I didn't realize I had been charged for an extra sandwich.. I tapped my card without reviewing the overall charge (my fault) and I unfortunately didn't look at my receipt until I was home much later in Sacramento. Otherwise, the sandwich and potato salad were incredible and I would highly recommend stopping by this neighborhood spot for some delicious food.

This place is clearly a great neighborhood place for locals. Def old school Italian feel which is a thing I love. I will say, it's not immediately obvious when you walk in what you need to do. You are required to to fill out a sando slip that's just resting on top of a shelf. I figured out after waiting for a bit so I had to lose my place in line to go fill out the slip. They don't really have any curated sandwiches like an Italian combo or anything like that. I went with a mortadella sandwich. It was good. Maybe needed like oil and vinegar but I didn't see an option for that. The sandwich was pretty good. I saw they had some deli sides and one caught my eye: smoked cheddar and bacon potato salad. I wanted that. So I'm assuming that you ask them for it as the slip has absolutely no checkbox or space for this. So as my sandwich is finished and they tell me to pay, I say I want a side of potato salad, please. They tell me if I want it to get back in line, a line which was longer than when I first arrived and took me about 10 minutes to get my sandwich made. Not amazing customer service. Suffice to say, I didn't get any potato salad. So, this place is probably better experience when you're a local and you know all the quirks. Not necessarily friendly to newbies.

Finally came to try out this famous local spot milk bread was fresh and soft. Never came so didn't know how to order but seen people when you first walk up writing their order. Service was not friendly as I expected the service to be a lot better. However nobody greeted us , after filling out your paper I wasn't sure where to go since it was our first time there. It's very small in there so not many places to stand. Maybe they should have a how to order and where to stand next. Someone finally said oh don't stand there go behind another guy so make sure to stand to the farthest aisle. Then as you stand by the deli area beware not to stand to close to the counter. A lady was slicing meat and said stand over there they'll call you when you can put your order. Like I said their service could be more friendly. Next someone making your sandwich that's free she was probably the nicest and asked if me and my co worker were together and said she can make our sandwiches! After waiting wasn't sure where to stand so we just waited by the front till our sandwiches were done to pay at the cashier. Besides that they have great selection of meats and options to add to your sandwich and sandwich tasted great. Mine was about $10.00 Also ordered a focaccia bread runs about $4.50 or so for a loaf a little thin and too salty for my liking. Would possibly try it out again just cause I love supporting local business.

Was in the mood for a good sandwich and stumbled upon this while in Stockton. A ambiance Italian deli joint that has delicious desserts as well. I got the hot salame x cajun turkey on Dutch crunch roll which tasted 12/10. Service was quick and friendly.

I have been craving for Sub sandwich and didn't want to go the fast food route so I searched for a mom and pops store that can satisfy my cravings. I found this little corner shop and decided to try it out. You come in and they have a smooth process of ordering your sandwich. Fill out an ordering form to customize your sandwich, wait to be called your turn and pay for your order. That's it! I have my sandwich on a dutch crunch bread (Applewood smoked ham, smoked turkey with provolone) and I loved every bite of it. I saved half for later and decided to toast it and oh boy it was a game changer. They don't skimp on their ingredients and with just half of my sandwich I was full. This place though small have loads of good stuff inside. From dry pastas, to sauces, breads, deli meats, and even dry beans. You can make a whole meal to feed the hungry mouths. I'm definitely a repeat customer and will be trying everything else they have to offer.

Love the ciabatta bread! Lots of choices to make your ideal sandwich. Their focaccia pizza is great too but you have to preorder.

Ask the Community - Genova Bakery

    Do you sell malfadine pasta?

We sell a lot of different pastas but we don't sell that particular cut. I'm not sure but you might check Podesto's Market on Pacific Ave.

Do you use a sourdough starter for your breads?

No, most of our breads are based off of a sweet dough not sour.

Do you have gluten free bread options ? My wife has gluten allergy and I feel bad she is unable to enjoy an Italian cold cut.

I’m sorry but we do not bake gluten free breads. To be truly gluten free, you have to store the ingredients in a separate area and process the dough on different equipment which we don’t have the capability of doing here at Genova.… Read more

Pretty upscale market with a nice deli and bakery for this area. I'd say real close to Whole Foods…read morequality and the prices match. But this local indy store has been around in this town for over 55 years, so it is well deserved for them to be a local fave. I only got a sandwich for the road and a bakery item, so no significant grocery shopping. I was traveling back home and didn't have a cooler so I refrained. But next time if I have a cooler, their meat counter will get exercised. Got a Salami Sandwich ($11/4*) from their deli and it was pretty solid. Every sandwich is customized, so every customer fills out a card, checks off your preferences and hand it over to a deli clerk. Nothing out of the ordinary here, just your basic sandwich stuff, but with quality and fresh ingredients. I liked everything in my sandwich, was even to put alfalfa sprouts in it, as I haven't had that option in over a decade. I wished there would have been an option to add oil n vinegar to make it more 'Italian' tasting, so I had to settle on just mayo and mustard, which is more classic American tasting to me. Still a solid sandwich that I was able to eat in 2 intervals so a decent value in my book. Coffee Crunch Cake ($7/3.5*) Very impressive tall cake with a very moist crumb. A little too industrial tasting for me but better than other grocery cakes like Safeway, which taste like plastic to me, so many additives and stabilizers. Cake part had a light chocolate taste, but maybe it was supposed to be more coffee-like? I couldn't taste any coffee except for this super hard and sweet candy on top used for garnish. Indeed that candy offered a 'crunch' element but in a very cloying and awkward way. Sure it was nice and glossy and even resembled shiny coarse stone like obsidian. But to take a bite that big of hard candy to go along a delicate cake was just too extreme for me. I think if that candy were in smaller chunks, more like a crumb texture, it would disperse more sending coffee flavor more evenly and not risk breaking a tooth on that hard sweet candy. I had higher hopes for this. Gawked at their butchers counter and it was pretty darn impressive, Pretty high quality stuff but also insanely expensive. Steaks start at $20 per pound and easily rises double to triple from there. But they got some serious cut steaks here, like 2-3 inch thick cuts and they even have a couple versions of wagyu steaks. Nothing is prewrapped, everything has to go through a clerk. Produce section just meh and regular. Well kept but Safeway may have a more extensive produce section. Dry goods definitely Whole Foods level. They seem to have a guy out front bbqing meats like sausages and tri-tip, like 7 days a week, which is impressive. I got there around 11 am and the employee was just setting up. Otherwise I may have tried something. Cool store, that if this were in my town, I'd be a reg. Since I was just a passing traveler, just call me impressed.

Coming to Podesto's Market is a treat for me. I get to indulge in treats that very from cookies to…read moreslices of cake, pies, and even hand pies, which I believe the hand pies are made in house. It has taken me some time, but I think I'm able to tell what items are made here at the store compared to items prepared elsewhere and sold here. The items that they have brought in are very good quality and taste great, I just prefer to have items that are made in-house, it satisfies my taste buds. Today I purchased "Podesto's Own" cookies. These are cookies they make in house. Today the flavours I purchased was lemon, malted white chocolate and a peppermint shortbread cookie. The price is $19.99/pound for these cookies and I bought roughly 4 to 6 of each of those flavours I mentioned, so I spent $11.51 total, but like I said, I get to indulge when I come to this store and it's no surprise to me when I get to the register. Some times I even surprise myself because I over estimate the prices which makes me happy to feel like I saved a little Today I also purchased three different kinds of cheeses that I was able to find in very small sizes. Literally, I think I paid $1.76 for the smallest one and I paid $3.12 for the bigger one. These are name brands that are expensive. (For my price range anyways) However these are cheeses that I would like to know what they taste like but I don't want to buy the full amount because what if I don't like it, they're too expensive for me to buy and then have to throw away so I'm excited to try the cheeses that I bought today. The last thing that I bought today was a green onion dip mix that I can only find at this store. I used to be able to find it at another store that is close by but for some reason, they stopped selling the green onion flavour and only sell the French onion, which I haven't even tried. I just know that the green onion is amazing and it doesn't matter what brand I try nothing compares to this one so I come to Podesto's to get this dip because thankfully they have carried it for years. It was really busy today, especially in the bakery and deli area, however, the people working today in that area were very friendly and tried to get to everyone as soon as possible. Once I got to the cashier everything went smooth. The long lines were gone and I got out of there without spending more than $40 today which is great. Oh, I forgot about something. I came across a fruit preserve that I did not think would be available at any store because I've only been able to find this online but it tastes amazing and it's low in sugar, which is what I'm always looking for as well. (Let's pretend like I didn't buy all those cookies today please...) Anyways, it's Fior di frutta, wild blueberries. I'm very excited for this. Now I know where to purchase this. I hope you have a successful shopping trip as I have today at Podesto's. There's so much to stumble upon and excite your taste buds!
