Palm Beach Breast Institute - Dr. Robert A. Gardner

Palm Beach Breast Institute

(1 review)

If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, a breast mass, or just need a second opinion, I highly…read morerecommend scheduling an appointment with Dr. Robert Gardner. I was diagnosed with a breast mass, and fate lead me to the Palm Beach Breast Institute, where I met Dr. Gardner, a brilliant surgeon, who has spent his life researching breast cancer! He isn't just another doctor, who diagnoses and treats his patients, he is a talented breast surgeon whose research, innovative surgical techniques, and knowledge of breast cancer makes him the kind of expert you should look for if you are diagnosed! Before I scheduled my appointment, I asked my general practitioner what he thought of who I had chosen. His response was, "Dr. Gardner is a world renown breast expert, I can't possibly refer you to anyone better." That was all the advice I needed. From the first time I walked into his office, he made sure I understood my options, and and what each option entailed. He and his wonderful ultrasound technician, went through the ultrasound with me, showing me where the masses were and explaining the procedure. That was a first! Most ultrasound procedures are done without any involvement of the patient other than you laying there and being told when and how to move during the procedure, and then you wait...(tick tock, a week passes), while you worry what was found. I was 100% comfortable going forward. Before my surgery, the preop procedure of installing wire locators was a bit uncomfortable (because let's face it, wires in your boobs kinda hurt). But, his team was so loving and compassionate that I was smiling through it all. At the hospital he performed a partial mastectomy to remove 3 areas of concern. He spoke to me before the surgery, and made me feel at ease. Afterwards, I was given great advice on what types of bras I should wear, how to compress my boobs, how to clean the area, and what to expect. The scar left behind is another example of how talented he is; at 1.5 months post surgery, it is barely noticeable. Not just Dr.. Gardner, but the entire staff is truly brilliant and amazing. They care for you as if you are a close family member, and treat you like you are the only patient they have. None of that rush you in, rush you out, and send you off without knowing what is going on, like you find at many of the other practices. If you ever have a question, you can call and someone you actually know will answer the phone! I am so happy that I found the Palm Beach Breast Institute. I am cancer free, scar free (barely noticable), and a testimonial for why choosing the brightest, expert in breast cancer is the ONLY way to go!

After 48 hours I called again and was told they had my information and it could take up to 72 hours to make an appointment. It's now 8 days later and still no contact. Do yourself a favor and see someone who actually cares about you!

I have family members that go here so I know they are being taken care of. However, my 1-star…read morerating comes from when I had to cancel a couple of appointments for my family; the 'customer service' was absolutely awful. Since I am not from FL, I wasn't aware there were more than quite a few locations for Florida Cancer Specialists. There were plenty of options and I tried to listen, but I also wasn't sure which location this person went to, so I ended up going to the final option which may have been West Palm. The lady at this one was nice, and she was able to close out the most recent appointment, while letting me know the actual location was in Lake Worth. So I call back, choosing the Lake Worth option just to confirm. THIS lady was horrible. I just wanted to make sure that the appointment was cancelled (although I assume the locations were all connected, I know better than to assume such a thing), so I figure it didn't hurt to make the extra effort. Right away, this person gave attitude, saying she didn't see ANY messages (like I was supposed to know what this meant and this was me at fault), and why didn't I get the name of the lady I had spoken to at the other location. I actually started to snap back and tell her I can call the other location back since this seemed to be such an ordeal for her. She relented somewhat, but the damage was already done. During my frustration dealing with this thing, I had forgotten to cancel the future appointment a few months away. Obviously, I called back the West Palm and they were able to take care of this right away with no issue about any 'messages' being left. Realizing the next day, I was still angry about the interaction I had with Lake Worth, and I actually gave them another call. I'm 99% sure the lady I spoke to this time was not the same one from the previous day, but she patched me through to her office manager (on speakerphone nonetheless but better than nothing). I even let her know I probably would not have had an issue, but the fact one of her employees was so rude over the phone; what if someone just lost a family member and had to deal with this? I kindly let this supervisor know whomever I spoke to the previous day wouldn't know (or care) which is infuriating. She clearly shouldn't be working with the public, much less a sensitive medical setting. Doubtful she will be reprimanded but just a note to people considering doing business with this particular location; they have an insufferable employee on the front lines. People such as her would possibly be better fit in a prison setting.

Upon meeting him I was impressed that he had read my entire file and knew everything about me instead of asking me questions about why I was there. He was incredibly thorough in not only his testing but also his treatment plan. He literally saved my life and I am now in complete remission, no longer on chemo and no longer on immunotherapy. However, he has assured me that this is not a fly by night relationship and will be with me monitoring me for the rest of my life. Instead of the stoic, cold physician most say oncologists can be, he is warm and compassionate along with great knowledge of his field.

As you can imagine... he scared the H E double hockey sticks out of me! I was floored! To receive a referral out of the blue and by mail was overwhelming! The appointment had already been made for me with Dr. Sawhney. I trusted my life once again to the Great Physician, knowing He would put me in the best hands-- and He did! He's been practicing for many years; graduated from the Univ. College of Medical Sciences, Delhi Univ, New Delhi, Delhi, India in 1989. He works in Tamarac, FL and specializes in Hematology/Oncology. Dr. Sawhney is affiliated with Broward Health Coral Springs, Florida Medical Center a Campus of North Shore and Northwest Medical Center. He is professional, sensitive, soft-spoken and caring! The office building is located near University Hospital in Tamarac. Parking is a bit challenging, but the facilities are nice, and the staff is wonderful. The nurse was so sweet, and the phlebotomist who drew blood was the best I've had in a long long time. She found my vein from the get-go and she was very gentle. I was so happy, I gave her a Starbucks gift card! Dr. Sawhney was as perplexed as I was that I was there and said the referral was not only premature, but that they had skipped a step. I cried tears of relief, and he was professionally comforting. He set me up with a referral to a Gastroenterologist and I was thankful the staff made the appointment directly over the phone with the other specialist's office. Otherwise, it may have been several more weeks until I would have been able to set it up myself. My experience was 100% satisfactory and although this isn't the type of business that anyone wants to visit, should you need to, I highly recommend Dr. Sawhney. One last thing: Should you need to consult with an oncologist, please feel free to send me a short, to the point private message; no need for details. I want to pray and be whatever part of your support team you'll have me be. We're in this journey called life together--never alone!
