Hiring Shirley as our day coordinator was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding. We had a big wedding with 250 guests and I was anxious all the way up to the day of the wedding, but I was surprised by how much fun we ended up having at our wedding. I would say one big reason is because of Shirley who was there with us every step of the day. I knew I wanted a day of coordinators who are not only bilingual, but also know the Chinese wedding customs. We had many Chinese guests and family members who did not speak English, and this was the first wedding of parents from both sides. I wanted to make sure we have a good time, and our parents are also well taken care of since we will be too busy to tend to them. We had all our vendors booked before hiring Shirley so we booked the classic package. For this package, Shirley started working with us about 6 weeks before the wedding. She introduced herself to our vendors and made sure they had the itinerary before the wedding, attended zoom meeting with us when requested, and she was quick to respond to our requests and questions. Our wedding included elements from both Chinese and Western weddings, it was a 14-hour day including getting ready, gatecrashing, two tea ceremonies, photoshoots, a first look, ceremony, a quick first dance practice, receptions, and three dress changes (7a-11 pm)! With so much to do, we had a tight itinerary, and Shirley made sure the right people was at the right place at the right time so we are on schedule. She communicated with our wedding party on what's next on the itinerary, and guided our parents through the itinerary. Shirley did a mini rehearsal with our parents for the ceremony and reception introduction on the day, and made sure they were there to see our first look through the window without interrupting our own moments. We just finished having our wedding in Nov 2023 and hired Shirley back in January 2023 to help plan our wedding. Shirley offers 3 different packages: 1. Masterpiece Package: Full wedding planning (suitable for 7-11 months prior to wedding date) 2. Marvel Package: Partial wedding planning (suitable for 4-8 months prior to wedding date) 3. I'm already a super type-A meticulous planner, so I didn't need too much help with finding all of our vendors and planning timelines/checklists, but I really needed help with some of the smaller details and expertise of someone who's in the industry. I also wanted to make sure everything fell into place on the day-of so I could just relax and enjoy the moment. But most importantly, it was super crucial for me to get an Asian Wedding planner, particularly one that spoke Cantonese. My husband's family was Toisan/Cantonese speakers with limited English speaking abilities and my family was Korean but spoke English. As you can imagine, communication was a bit of a challenge for us, and to pull off something as large as a wedding, we definitely needed a translator/interpreter to be on our side. *Enter Shirley Chau from Genesis Weddings.* Most of our timeline and details were falling into place, but I needed Shirley's guidance on finding an MC/DJ, hiring Flower & Decor services, and locking down a Limo/Shuttle Bus Driver. Shirely was an absolute dream!! My husband and I come from two different backgrounds so we wanted to really mix our two cultures as best as we could. On our own, I am sure that would never happen. "Do I need a wedding planner?" I asked the same question to myself before I got Shirley. Getting married is full of happiness and excitement. But planning a wedding is not that easy, and kind of stressful if you were doing that by yourself (or even with your partner). We all want the best services (photography, videography, decor, etc.) which could also stay within our budget. I used The Knot at the beginning but I found it was not that helpful. The Knot won't tell you how much the vendors will ask for until you contact the vendors. Shirley is personable, reliable, organized, and a great listener. For the first in-person meeting, Shirley met my husband and me at the venue. She went beyond the appointment time bracket chatting through details at the venue. Shirley took the time to answer any questions and get a feel of what our needs are, allowing time for us to gather thoughts. For the second appointment, Shirley gave us an option of doing a zoom call or meeting at a cafe. When we suggested we meet at a cafe so it's easier to share diagrams and talk through, Shirley suggested she come to a place in our neighborhood so it's easier for us. On the day of I just realized she took an hour to get to the restaurant we picked in Astoria. My husband couldn't make it in time so it was just us two, but Shirley didn't mind. We ordered drinks, bar food, and chatted casually until I was ready to pull out papers to talk through the timeline, table layout, rentals list, etc. I also showed Shirley images of the stationery I was working on and she was open to reviewing it all. Shirley was quick with drafting out a timeline based on the ceremony time and ensured there was adequate buffer time in case there were any delays with traveling from place to place. She also ensured the rentals list had a fair number of extra napkins and utensils in case guests needed more (something I didn't think of myself.) Shirley worked hard on ensuring a rain plan we're happy with was drafted out. What I'm most impressed with is how Shirley managed to handle communication with multiple vendors to align on changes with schedule, guest count, and weather. We changed our guest count up until two weeks leading up to the wedding and Shirley didn't hesitate to make the adjustment with the caterer. She also pointed out costs that could be lowered in our updated catering quote and negotiated with the caterer via multiple calls. It is true that Shirley believes in the importance of the bride being the bride the day of the wedding. We hired Shirley as our wedding planner after realizing that there was no way that we would be able to plan a wedding in New York while living across the country. Shirley guided us throughout the entire process and was a big help with navigating through cultural traditions, vendor selection, scheduling, and everything in between. I had my wedding in NYC in August. Shirley was our wedding planner and the day of coordinator. She did an absolute amazing job. Her price is totally reasonable given the quality of her work during that five months. I think that alone speaks volumes about Genesis' work -- other people liked it so much, they want it for their own weddings! Shirley truly goes above and beyond to make wedding planning easier on her brides and grooms. Even though we didn't hire Genesis for wedding planning, she gave us advice about our seating chart and table arrangements, and helped us with some questions we had about Chinese etiquette. Shirley even helped us look for chair cover rentals a couple weeks before our wedding when we realized the venue's chair covers wouldn't work. We ended up booking with a vendor that we found ourselves, and Shirley still generously offered to pick up and drop off the covers all the way in Brooklyn so that we would have one less thing to do before the wedding and could immediately go on our honeymoon. Working with Shirley is more like working with a friend than a vendor. She really cared about making our day the best that it could be. My only regret is that I didn't find Genesis sooner, so that I could have had Shirley be our coordinator too! read more

Shirley has done a fantastic job during the whole 5 month planning for our weddings in long island area of New York State! we are glad that we chosen her as our wedding planner since whatever she has done for us made us feel very confident that our wedding was going to be an awesome experience! We started from the first step of picking wedding venues and ended with the busy big day during which she has done well in understanding what we really want for lots of details including color theme, flower preferences, wedding cake toppings, etc. We ended up successfully kept the expenses in the loop of our budget and this could be attributed to her ability to negotiate with vendors. The communications between us and her has been multilevel from txt messages, emails to phone calls according to situations and her responses are always in time, sometimes even very late in night for urgent questions. We are also satisfied by many vendors recommended by her such as photographers, hair style designer, DJ and wedding officiant. All of them are professional and good at what they are doing. This is one important reason we appreciate what Shirley has brought us. On our wedding day, Shirley is responsible to make sure everything happens according to plan so I saw her busy all the time. She has a great idea about what is the highest priority at the moment and what things should be delegated to vendors or other staff so that she could focus on orchestration for all events that day. What is more important is that this made my bride feel very good that day since she does not have to worry about anything else but being a beautiful bride and we really trust Shirley and are grateful about what she did. After the wedding many of my guests told us they really enjoyed the wedding and how do we handle that that well. For some of them the answer is not important since they are already married however for all of my friends who are planning to have a great wedding in New York area I would definitely suggest them to contact Shirley. From the design, to choosing vendor, following-up on scheduled events; Genesis wedding looked after me in every single aspect throughout the planning thru execution. They did an amazing job making sure products meet what we wanted (and often going above and beyond w/ pleasant surprises).
