Over the past 18 years, we have not only been customers , but we feel like Ohana. Vera has sold us three pieces of art by James Coleman, but she/they also represent at least 40 artists. From original art pieces to giclees, each piece is nicely displayed and will arrive in your home professionally packaged and delivered. Our only limitations to acquiring more is our lack of wall space. She's extremely particular about art, so the fact that she still wanted an Avi painting years later says it all. The piece we received is stunning, but what really sets this gallery apart is the kindness and care from their team. This is a nice gallery - there are two of them located in this area. This is the one in the Queen's Marketplace (across the street from the King's) but I believe owned by the same entity? Certainly affiliated I'd guess with the exact same names. Similar items inside and similar look and feel - but they did have a few things that were different. Some very nice and vibrant art to be found inside but I especially loved all the beautiful glass art they showcased and had. Some really gorgeous small and large glass seashells and starfish in gorgeous colors I had not seen before. Staff were friendly and welcoming and left me free to browse and ask questions if needed - but otherwise to look around and enjoy myself without being stalked. Which is always appreciated in an art gallery for me. read more

Bottom Line: Local fine art. I enjoyed pursuing Genesis Gallery and particularly looking at all of the vintage inspired signs made by Steve Neill. For me, selecting art for my home has to be something that makes my heart sing. And I tend to need a few days to think about pieces, especially when the price tag is $1K+. Given that I visited this gallery on my way out of town I didn't purchase anything but for those looking to get some nice art on Big Island, this is a great place to start. read more

As a lover of art, this space called to me to enter and admire the magick that has been created by these genius artists. My personal favorite artist is Wyland, and for to beginning of my life I would see his art in Long Beach CA and LA. There's one piece, of a humpback mother and calf done in exquisite light that spoke volumes to me as soon as I laid eyes on it. As a long time admirer of Wylands murals, my emotions flooded my eyes and heart at the sight of this piece. While I know that the original piece itself is unlikely to be in my price range as a young woman, I went to ask one of the assistants in the gallery. I found one was still speaking with an older couple finishing up a sale, and the other (short brown hair, tall lanky body) was likely wrapping up their purchased piece. I allowed her to finish as I understand the feeling of needing to finish a sale and get the art piece packaged for them to take home to enjoy. When she finished, I politely shared my curiosity about the piece, and asked if there were possibly any prints I could purchase or order. Having worked in an art gallery for a year recently myself, I figured I could possibly order a giclee or something. But she very quickly revealed her distaste for me, that had been hinted to me when she basically ignored me when my friend and I walked in. (Had I not looked at her and smiled through my mask, she would have ignored me entirely.) She dismissively told me there are no prints of Wylands work, that this particular piece was special and likely unpublished, and turned to my friend to ask if we'd been to another gallery that sells prints. When I asked if they had prints of Wylands work, she glanced at me and continued to tell my friend about it, and tells me they might have "little mother and child prints there" that are "similar to what I'm looking for." Every time she looked at me, she would quickly look me up and down in blatant distaste, and by the time she decided she was done speaking to me, although I surely had not finished asking questions about the artists and pieces, she just walked away from me. I take great offense to this. She was rude, disrespectful, and discriminating. She would hardly look at me, a brown girl, and would mainly turn to look at my white friend to speak, while turning her body away from me--almost like she didn't even want to look at my face, and wanted me to look at the back of her head. It really is a shame, I wanted to appreciate the art there a little longer, but I didn't feel welcome. Melanin blessed people, beware. read more

While I praise for this store for advertising local artists and showcasing a wider range for their works, this place is beyond expensive. It is an obvious tourist trap and the people here try to upsell you (so they get a commission in their part). They are very stingy on any type of negotiations or discounts; this includes buying in bulk. Shipping minimum is $75, if you want a small portrait sized painting... You can't touch anything... even if they take out the jewelry under the glass counter. ...and then they pressure you into signing a "VIP Guestbook", so they hope if you do buy something AND refer to one of the ladies who work there; they can get credit for it. All in all, you're better getting the local artists' contact info and have them custom make you some stuff for yourself than paying 40%+ marked up items in their store. read more

I have to agree with other Yelpers! Similar to other reviewers, we walked in to browse some of the local artwork. The employee immediately started hard selling items we were not even remotely interested in. I felt like I couldn't even look at a piece for two minutes before she would come running over. The one star is definitely for the beautiful artwork! It is such a same these people can't be more friendly and open. They are losing business quickly! read more

I second Noel A's review. Went to waikoloa for a family vacation-- born and raised in Hawaii just having a change of pace. Visited all the Queens Shops and came upon Genesis. My father and i saw an interesting piece and wanted to feel the texture. The lady at the front proceeded to call us out in front of other customers saying rudely, "please! Don't touch the art!" The vibe was completely awkward and we no longer felt welcomed. Those women who work at Genesis are more concerned with the image of the place rather than advocating for the fine art of Hawaii. My husband and I walked into Genesis Gallery looking for a special gift. We were warmly greeted by the staff. We had previously looked at a number of galleries. However, Vera immediately zeroed in and gave us several thoughtful options. She was knowledgable, genuine and warm. It was obvious that she delights in her work. After careful consideration we ended up getting two spectacular gifts - as we couldn't decide! :))) We both felt she had listened to who the gift was for and what would be pleasing to the recipient and then led us w/ confidence and sincerity. We left the gallery feeling that we had found something special and that we had met a beautiful soul. We will be back! This is a special gallery w/ a lovely staff! A must visit! read more

I absolutely LOVE visiting Genesis Galleries each time I return to The Big Island! It's a "must-do" for me at least once, sometimes twice. Vera, the owner, is so gracious and hospitable, and is so wonderful at making you feel as if you're her most precious customer whom she's known forever! The variety of artists' creations is both breath-taking and mind-blowing, and I could spend all day studying each piece from every angle. I have purchased several pieces from Genesis Galleries, 2 of which were commissioned pieces, and Vera and her staff did a fabulous job of keeping me informed with each step of the process, from selection to purchase to shipping. We have bought several pieces of art from this gallery. They have always treated us kind. Very helpful in explaining the pieces if we had questions. Just this month we bought a Milan original and it is fantastic. We have not had any bad experiences. We have even met the owners who are excellent people and very knowledgeable in fine art. Pam got us started in Queens day 1,Chris in Queens day 4 ,displayed the Wyland which we got and Vera the owner took over in kings.They are exceptional.We got three 1of a kind pieces.They r pricey but u get what u pay for espiecally 1 of kind pieces.The other store Aesthetic Hi is also owned by a relative with different pieces.U have to visit all three to see all they have to offer,each is different.All of there staff are great.We only dealt personally with the three mentioned .Keep in mind that shipping is included and if u get heavy pieces that expensive. I went into the gallery in early December ('10) and after looking around a bit, I saw a blown glass paperweight that I thought my soon-to-arrive, but still on the mainland boyfriend, might really like to have for his loft. I was about to take a picture to text him, when the lady working there stopped me. She was quite severe and demanded that I not take a picture. I was totally fine with that, but I explained that I wanted my bf to see the piece so I could find out if he did indeed want it. She said they had photos and I could send him one, but then she proceeded to ask me 4 or 5 times if I was serious about buying the piece. I was dumbfounded. I own a lot of art and live amidst a bunch of galleries in Portland's Pearl district. After her last stern questioning about my seriousness, I decided I really wasn't interested in buying art from such a gallery. I came back about an hour later and told her I was unimpressed with her customer service and both she and the store manager continued to condescend to me, "Oh, I'm sorry YOU felt that way". Seriously, spend your money somewhere where people are about the art and not their weird egos or whatever the hell they have going on there at Genesis. read more

We recently visited Hawaii and stumbled into this wonderful gallery. They have a nice variety of art work. I liked that they had local artists too. They have very affordable art up to high end pieces so there is something for everyone. My husband and I very much enjoyed talking to Vera and John and hearing the stories about the art pieces and the artists. I feel like we got to bring home a piece of Hawaii. read more
