No their kids weren't born with piles of fur.... they are parents to rescue doggies who are so amazing, even if you were not a dog or pet person you would fall in love!!! The cozy and natively decorated rooms stay cool with a breeze that enters the room when your windows are open. Ceiling fan adds a special touch for those extreme days so you can stay refreshed. The town is safe, friendly, and full of things to do. Paul and Beate's bed and breakfast is like home away from home with people who really care about you. They know a lot about where to go and what to do. Their cooking is amazing. I for one am a very picky eater and not Vegan. My wife is Vegan and Casa Axis Muni's cuisine is wooooooooowwww!!! Reminds me of being a child and eating with my grandpa in the morning. Always a yummy papaya, fresh local fruit, fresh juices, and today we even had a treat with roasted baby banana topped with hemp hearts and roasted nuts. We will miss you guys !!! Beate may all your family be great upon your visit to Germany and you are here with us too and we are with you in your heart. Bless all your loved ones. Thank you all for everything ! You have a home in Frederick Maryland if you ever come out. We love you ! Small tip to new guests. Cash in the only method of payment. I recommend the Santander bank / ATM machine at one of the supermarkets or better yet Airport can give you a good exchange. Grace and Paris

Hacienda Kaan AC can be very difficult to find if you attempt to use Google Maps or any of the…read morelisted addresses. Save yourself some stress and please use our directions to drive to this wonderful establishment: From Cancun/Airport - Take 307 to 180 to 180D (basically follow the signs to Valladolid/Merida). Be warned, this is a toll road. It costs about 300 pesos and they do not accept foreign currency or credit cards. The cost is about $15-20 USD, but will save you about 90minutes. Since it is a toll road, there are no towns or gas stations till you hit Valladolid (about 90km). After about an hour (we drove the speed limit), take 295 South towards Valladolid. At the roundabout, follow the signs to Cancun via 180 (the Northeastern part of the "wheel" if you look at a map). At the stop sign, take a left and cross over the highway and 2 exit/entrance ramps to the Hotel (It's a huge sign/gated entrance). If you see Mayapan Traditional Agave Distillery, you've gone West instead of East. If you see the police stop in Valladolid, you've gone too far and do not use the 180 that runs through town; it will take you all the way to Tulum. Five Stars isn't enough to describe how amazing Hacienda Kaan AC. A hidden gem in the Yucatan that has set the standard for all of our future stays at any Resort/Bed & Breakfast. We were hesitant to write this review, because we thought about keeping it for ourselves and the locals that visit here often. If you are looking for a combination of rest and adventure, look no further. The Hacienda, itself, is rich in history, which is detailed in a book written in 1864. The book, "El Filibustero" described the adventure and love story of a pirate that resulted in the property that is translated from Mayan to mean "High in the Sky," hence the hotel's other name "El Olimpo." Even the main building, El Castillo, was reconstructed from the archaeological remains of a 16th century castle (large pictures of the site are located in the resorts restaurant) and contains an extensive collection of artwork from that period. Yes, you are literally staying in a museum and historical site located in the heart of the Yucatan. More on adventure: We highly recommend that you have your own transportation if you decide to stay here. The hotel is located 15minutes North of ancient city of Valladolid, a great place for strolling through its colonial-era stone streets to visit extremely tourist friendly restaurants, chapels, markets, and cenotes. Three major Mayan Ruins are located within driving distance: Chichen Itza, Ek' Balam, and Coba (the last is located in Quintana Roo half way between the hotel and the ocean), Many cenotes are located around the hotel in addition to their own private one (the mechanism used for raising and lowering people looks ancient and scary - we don't think it has been in operation for years). More on relaxation: During your stay, you can enjoy their pools, wander the grounds, or just relax in their comfortable rooms with jetted tubs and powerful AC units. You'll basically have your own private Butler that works the grounds and the restaurant. Edwardo worked two of the three nights that we visited. English was not his first language, but he was extremely patient and friendly. Helping us despite our horrid Spanish (we've gotten rusty over the last ten years since living in Juarez) and teaching us some Mayan in the process: "Ni'bo'olal!". Each stay comes with a complimentary breakfast at their restaurant too (Please see our separate review for the restaurant). I could write pages on how amazing and relaxing our stay was Hacienda Kaan AC. We'd love to return and, if your looking for an amazing hotel on your adventures in the Yucatan, we suggest you that you plan your stay here.

The staff is friendly, and willing to share the stories they know about the place. It's so nice to stay in a place so full of history, and that is keeping its charm and not becoming another touristy place changing to suit the patrons. My only complaint is that when I asked for Chocolate (Mexican hot chocolate) for breakfast, they offered me chocomilk (which is like nesquick). But I did have some great Mexican eggs and conchas. We are back from our 3rd year in Tulum and staying with Tom at the wonderful Posada Luna del Sur…read more Ignore the review about being in an alley (it isn't, its a street...sorry it isn't lined with street lamps and flower boxes), and the neighbors he is referring to have been nothing but nice or indifferent. They usually say good morning and good night to us as we walk by them. don't forget you are in a small town in rural Mexico. If you want opulence and midnight room service, pay the prices down at the beach. If you want an experience of seeing what a small town is like, stay here. Downtown Tulum seems much funner than the beach resorts anyway. more options, more to do. There is some noise in the evening at times dogs bark, roosters crow....with the window shut and the fan on, most of that is shut out. it wasn't cool enough when we were there to sleep with windows open. ProTip: If you are going to the beach, walk toward the ADO bus station and the cabs drop in price by something like 20 peso.....they operate via 'zones' and prices should be fixed. Drives should have a list of stops with prices on it. We pay $110 peso to get to the beach near Ana y Jose (for comparison). The rooms are always clean and don't have a musty odor. The maids do a nice job daily of keeping things clean.....which can also help keep ants away. There are not any 'Do Not Disturb' signs but I am sure you can work something out with Tom. Wifi is not available anywhere but on the top floor.....and only a portion of that. They have recently added a new cell tower in town and this year compared to the last two, we got decent cell service in our room (Verizon). Tom was a gracious host greeting everyone at breakfast as always. He makes sure to answer any questions and can provide suggestions for places to visit and eating establishments (Unico was this years suggestion and it was fabulous). The breakfast has come back! He had gotten rid of the cook to order food last year and decided to bring it back and it was better than ever!! Several options along with Juice, tea and coffee. Tom can help arrange for tours of sites, ruins, etc....and make reservations for you at various places like Cetle--another fantastic place to eat). The last thing I like is that you are away from 'downtown' a bit so you don't get any of the noise from the bars and other things that might run into the night. The town is super safe....we've never felt targeted, unsafe, or like we had to keep our head on a swivel......and we've walked through most of it at some point or another. Feel free to message me if you have any questions about this hotel. I'll give you the straight honest scoop. For the value, this place is great.

We first stayed here four years ago, (the year after we stayed at an all inclusive; the year after that we stayed at a cabana on the beach), and this year we came back to Posada Luna del Sur. Why? Because this hotel is excellent! It is affordable, safe, and it has everything you need, including air-conditioning, cable television, and an awesome complimentary breakfast (not continental, but full) on the roof top patio, which is very choice. Keep in mind that it is located in town, so we rent bicycles and ride them to the beach along the bike path, which is the only way to do it. Tom, the proprietor is great. He is honest, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable about the area - as he has lived there for years. I recommend this hotel to everyone I know who is headed to Tulum, and I will continue to do so. Definitely give Tom your business, and keep Tulum real! Tom, thank you once again for your hospitality and for the tequila - it was great to see you again!
