Seriously, I had no idea that a little, old school theatre was tucked away right in the City Centre on Kent Street. One of my offices is only a stones throw away, and I had no idea this place exited until my soulmate invited me to see an Agatha Christie play called Spiders Web with him last Friday night.
Definitely an old building (yes, was a church/chapel and a "poor" school back in the 1800's), yet the sandstone and quality of the bricks had built a solid space. Inside, the meet and greet area is a little cramped, yet do not judge a book by its cover. Love the old fashioned service with a smile.
During the interlude, it was common (last Friday, as at the time of writing this was also a little chilly) there were people drinking some tea in conventional large sized white china mugs, before returning them to the "main counter and tuck shop" inside. Wine was also available for sale, yet my man and I had already enjoyed an elephant style appetite for amazing pizza and cake fare.
The seating areas are cosy, yet for an old theatre they are rather comfortable. Surprisingly so. Although not spacious, the leg room is like cheap economy on a super long flight, yet the quality of the acting, scene and costumes selections erased the need to whine about the perceived lack of legroom. It (seriously) wasn't an issue.
Great plays, and great value for money from what my man told me. He paid this time. Definitely giving the cinemas a good run for their money. Why go and see a movie that you can rent on DVD later, when for only a few bucks extra you can come and play at the Genesian and enjoy real, live theatre that makes you feel more rich and luxe. Be part of this theatrical cult! (Sorry, terrible pun to finish off, I know.) read more
