I asked about what the charge was for (a urine test) our dog had skin issues he blew up yelling and flailing his arms around, asking me if I was questioning his intelligence ? I asked him to stop yelling there was NO NEED to disrespect me like that I simply asked what the charge and test was for ! I took him to ER vet in Davison it truly needed handled!! I gave them my dogs while record file they told me Heston gave him vaccines for Dogs could not even charged us a lot of money for those. him for quite a long time. I was floored. He acted like this. We used to go here when we were living on the South side of Flint. Dr. Heaton is a no-nonsense vet with a small community feel practice. He can come across as someone rather grumpy, but he seems to be better with pets than with people and he'll let you know if he thinks you chose a "problem pet" (in our case 2 Shar Pei). You'll notice though that he loves animals and he's also very understanding and flexible where it comes to billing for his services. Soon you'll look past the grumpiness and will find a vet who cares about your pet and who knows what your pet means to you. Don't go here if you want your vet to just agree with whatever you want. He acts in your pet's interest and doesn't sugarcoat reality. read more

You will not find a better vet than Dr. Heaton. I'd give him six stars if I could. His love and dedication to the animals he cares for goes beyond what I expect from a vet. My last dog had some very serious health issues. Dr. Heaton cared for him like a family member. He's an old school / country style vet. He always tells it like it is, even if it's not what you want to hear (especially if he thinks you're doing something wrong for your pet). I wanted to update that we did switch over and we are so glad we did. We had to put our beloved dog down because he had cancer so bad. It was internal and by the time we saw it he had just a day left until it took him. The doctor was professional and very caring. BEST VETERINARIAN EVER! Short of this is I took my beagle to his now former vet for an ear infection on a Tuesday in Berkley. This wasn't his first ear infection (he's 9) but instead of giving him the usual medicated drops and sending us on our way they also gave him a steroid shot. By 11 that night he had vomited up everything he had ate that day and was acting constipated when he went out. He was also unable to keep any fluids down without vomiting. I called the former vet the next day (Wednesday) and they said watch him for the day and if it continued bring him in Thursday for follow up. On Wednesday night he still had not ate and couldn't keep any fluids down and wanted to go out to attempt to use the bathroom about every 45 mins. I called the vet Thursday morning and reported all this. They didn't seem in any rush to see him and got us an appointment mid morning. When we went in they x rayed him and took blood samples with no results. They gave him a shot that they said would calm his stomach and some pills for follow up they said would calm his stomach and told me they had a few cases of an intestinal virus lately and that's all it was and had to let it run its course. Friday I took him mid day to my friends place who watches him while I'm at work (Grand Blanc) and he was having the same issues. When she let him out one time she noticed blood in his urine. When we called his vet they said to collect a sample of his urine and bring it to them. I asked if I should bring him too and they told me no, his dr was off and wasn't working until Saturday and that if something came up with his blood I could just take him to emergency or wait until Saturday. Well I ended up calling Dr Heaton to ask if he could investigate the urine and work with my vet so I didn't have to drive an hour back. He told me yes and asked why I wouldn't bring my dog with me to him. I just told him I was going with what my vet said to do and his response was less than thrilled with my vet. When we got to Dr Heaton he conducted a thorough exam of my dog and couldn't find anything wrong immediately. He then took a new blood sample after reviewing what my vet had sent him and saw they didn't test his sodium or potassium levels. Being that he is experienced with a life of treating animals he was positive my dog had kidney failure. He immediately started treating him and sent me with the blood sample he took to another vet he works with up the street that had the ability to test the sodium levels. He was 100% correct. Dr Heaton kept my dog overnight for IV treatment and came in twice overnight to check on him calling me both times. Jamie picked him up Saturday morning. Dr Heaton left his IV port in just in case there were any problems over the weekend and gave us contact info to get ahold of him immediately to meet if there were any problems. I now have a happy beagle again that was close to passing because his forever vet ignored his problems and over medicated him. Dr Heaton might come off abrasive but to me he's a wonderful Dr that just tells you like it is. He is great at his job and truly cares, isn't just chasing the dollar. I've never met another veterinarian like him and will never use anyone else!!! read more

Dr. Heaton is the BEST vet I have ever taken my pet to. He enjoys what he does and is great with animals. He may come across as grumpy as the previous reviews state...but he really isnt. His staff is friendly and always really helpful. He has taken care of my Shar Pei for the past three years and I would not go anywhere else! I think that Dr. Heaton is a great vet. He is no nonsense and very caring. He is also quick to refer you to a specialist ,if the problem is beyond him. His staff is wonderful, office is clean and yes he is grumpy. Especially if you are female. I have been in the room hearing him yuk it up with the guy in the next room and come to you and be very reserved. The break came for me when he quoted me one price for a surgery in the office and tripled the charge when I picked up the animal. When questioned he said "I must have just been talking about the anesthesia." We came to an agreement but it was wrong of him not to quote the entire price in the first place. He also pulled 13 of a friends puppy's teeth (without her consent) while doing another surgery. Then charged her for it. His rates are reasonable but I was very angry about the extra cost to me and to my friend. No one likes to get blind sided. I would still recommend him as a vet, just nail down the price before you leave and have him CALL before doing any unauthorized work. It also doesn't hurt to be male. read more

Took a small farm pet to doc. He examined my pet & told me where to go 4 my supplies. I also noticed that he spoke very fast & kept telling me to do different things. First he just wanted me to treat the sick pet but then he told me to treat all the pets because they probably had the same problem. He went back and forth so I made sure to ask questions, take notes, and repeat the instructions. The place he recommended I purchase the supplies I needed did not have it nor did 2 other places I tried. Called doc to tell him I ordered meds online & needed advice on dosage. His response was: "You buy it, you figure it out." It was then that my initial thoughts/feelings of him being a bit pompous and arrogant surfaced. I blew it off because I only knew of 2 vets that could help me & he was closest. I then returned to drop off stool samples (again, at his request). I was the only one in the office. The doc proceeded to tell me "I am not dealing with you" over and over. Wow. Not the reaction I had expected. He told me I was basically taking advantage of his services. I told him I did exactly what he said but he seemed offended that I purchased meds from another place. He kept walking behind the counter where I couldn't see him & berating me more. I told him I did nothing wrong & was shocked. His sarcastic response, "I know. You did nothing wrong. I spent a long time with you." I told him I appreciated it and he said, "I know u do & it didn't cost u a thing." Not sure what he meant. I spent $66 on the visit, a shot, and a stool sample on my first visit. It's his job to advise patients & occasionally speak to them on the phone without expecting further payment. Very unprofessional, unclassy, & offensive. Wonder if I would have been treated differently had there been others in the waiting area. I had a unique situation that was very new to me (not a classic dog or cat case) & was doing everything I could to help my pet. Doc not only turned me away but my pet as well which lends me to wonder why he chose this profession. It would be the same as me turning away one of my special needs students for after school help because I wasn't getting paid extra. Doc mentioned I was taking advantage of him because I questioned what to do & bought meds online. I had no choice. He was going to do the same (order online) because he didn't have what I needed. When I was checking out after my initial visit, a woman was there to euthanize her pet rat. She went into the room & came out a few minutes later in a frenzy. She was frantically looking for a few more dollars & kept saying the doc wouldn't put her rat down without $11. The woman had $8 & was obviously desperate. I ended up giving her $3. I am writing this as part of my review because I feel I need to defend myself against the false allegations of me taking advantage of the vet clinic. That is not the type of person I am. I would not be teaching special needs children in the inner city if that were the case. I don't turn away my students. I cannot believe the doc had the audacity to treat a woman (let alone any human) with this type of cowardly behavior. Hiding behind the wall & then returning to basically tell me to go away was something I have never experienced. I am still not sure what led to this event & why it was not handled differently. Complete lack of people/social skills & incredibly sarcastic. No way was I deserving of this type of service. I am disgusted & hope that this is the only negative review. STAY AWAY!! I CANNOT SAY IT ANY CLEARER. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!! I've been bringing my pets to this heartless crotchety old man (Dr. Heaton) for over 10 years now and he's NOTHING SPECIAL and today was the last straw. Oh,, he'll tell you how great he is and sing is accolades at the drop of a hat and often does! (Please spare me..) Today I brought my 11 year old female Chihuahua to him just to have some "suspect growths & spots" looked at on her and a general exam. He proceeds to pull up her green record card and says she's due for some vaccines. I explain to him that we took care of those last summer at a traveling vet down the road and would bring in those records in for him to be current. (we went there because they carry the flea products we wanted that he doesn't, and were less expensive than his, had better hours & are far nicer to deal with. I didn't tell him this of course). Upon hearing that I could possibly think of going somewhere else other than his business, he takes my pets green record card (with 11 years of notations on it) and SHOVES IT IN MY FACE and says, "then take her there from now on"!! (I kid you not! Word for Word!) Can you believe the gall of this idiot!! He has a GOD COMPLEX like I've never seen before and I feel stupid for putting up with him and dealing with his condescending attitude all of these years. We've always hesitated going there because you never knew the mood he was going to be in. (Bad or worse) Honestly! So, I handed him the card back and asked in a questioning tone, "are you serious"?? to which he replied, in a grouchy "YES". I immediately picked up my shaking little dog at my feet and told him, "You're a real Son of a Bitch" and walked out fuming! Of course I could have said a lot more, but this moron doesn't deserve any more of my business/money or breath from my lungs! He is so pompous and arrogant he should have retired years ago. He has clearly stated on numerous occasions in the past he cannot retire because he still has another child in school. (Well who's freaking fault is that?) In the process making it extremely clear that he doesn't want to be there! I've seen his terrible reviews on line before and kinda just wanted to look past them and try to look for the positive in what help he may provide for my beloved pets. I understand not everyone can have a rosy disposition. NO MORE consideration for him!! He just doesn't get it! I'm not a vindictive person, honestly. I rarely ever write a bad review as I try to look for the good in people and most are simple trying to do their best. This man needs to close-up shop now and RETIRE! Move-on to his barber shop quartet singing that he likes to do or whatever else. I've taken the time to get to know him in the hopes he would warm up at least a tiny bit. Nada! And just so you know this isn't all just about his personality. You should know that he performs surgery on your pets ALONE! No assistant! What if he needs another hand? It's your pets life at stake here folks. He only told us that our little dog had a 50% chance of surviving a simple hysterectomy AFTER HE DID THE WORK! I was shocked & dumbfounded as was my daughter who was there to hear that comment upon picking her up several years ago. Had I knew that going in,, I would have moved heaven and earth to go elsewhere and find anyone with better odds than that. So,, like I started out,, save your Money, save your Time, save your Sanity and above all, save your beloved pets and take them somewhere else where you're comfortable with the Vet and get the care they deserve. Dr. Heaton saved our elderly cat. Our regular vet was out of town for the weekend and the two other offices they referred us to said they were too busy to fit us in. Our cat had completely stopped eating or drinking, wasn't using her box and was barely moving. I knew if we waited until Monday, she wouldn't make it. I called Dr. Heaton and he told us to bring her in. He ran several blood tests in office and was wonderful in explaining what he thought was going on, pulling out medical books so that we could understand all of the anatomy involved. He advised we do antibiotic treatment via injection instead of oral meds because her digestive system was involved. I'd never given an injection before, and Dr. Heaton showed me how. He even stuffed a glove with cotton and gave me a needle and saline solution so that I could practice. He cautioned that she was very sick, and advised us to have a conversation about what to do if she didn't improve. He was candid, but extremely sensitive, saying that he didn't like having to talk about euthanization, but we should be prepared just in case. Our cat pulled through, and I know if Dr. Heaton hadn't have helped us she wouldn't be with us today. Both my husband and I thought he was candid, but caring. His prices were also lower than our regular vet office. I'm considering switching to Dr. Heaton, not because our regular vet is bad, but because I really appreciated the way Dr. Heaton treated our cat and us when we were all distressed. read more

This vet really knows his stuff. I had my cat at another vets office on Feb. 6, and he didn't do much.. my cat got sicker. I took him to see Dr. Headon and he gave him a more in depth exam, did blood work and found out what was wrong with him. His kidneys had failed him and he was in the process of dying. His kidneys not working anymore caused him to have blood clots that caused him paralysis in his hind legs and large amounts of pain. He had a hunch it was his kidneys before he even did the bloodwork but as to the cause for why the kidneys had stopped working is still unknown since he tested negative for feline leukemia and aids, the full profile blood test gave us the answers to what was wrong with him just not as to why. He has all the supplies in his office facility to do all the bloodwork of all types and x-rays and surgeries. He's a good oldschool vet with a lot of knowledge and is very gentle and kind with both the pet and it's owner. I will definitely be taking my other pets to him for care in the future instead of the vet that I'd been seeing. Dr. Headon's demeanor is the kind of demeanor you want a vet to have when caring for your pet. He sinerely cares about the animal and their needs and does what he can to help them. read more
