Fantastic art store. The prices are excellent, the selection includes high quality art supplies, and the staff are helpful. I was pleased with the quality and price of the one framing project we had done. This is a go to store for the art enthused of the area. This has got to be one of the most unfriendly frame shops I have ever been to. I asked for 8 little v nails but was told they are being discontinued and so no, they wouldn't give me any. i would have happily bought them and I also happen to have six projects needing glazing, fitting, matting. The framer associate said she disn't want to set her business up for failure. By providing a customer with 8 little nails? And that was worth losing what could have led to hundreds of dollars in sales of framing? I didn't even let it get that far so they don't realize the loss in sales. If thre is a manager reading this you might be more concerned because this is no way to operate a business. I've been to the shop twice and have not been satisfied with the service I have received. The first time I felt like the employees thought they were doing me a favor. They certainly charged me what they wanted since they are the only framing shop on the island. I thought maybe it was just a bad day but found the same poor attitude and service the second time I went into the store so I complained. I ended up taking my project to Anacortes instead. The store there was delightful, friendly and the energy was welcoming. Basic good business. Reflecting back, the work quality at Gene's Art & Frame was average at best and not worth the close to month long wait. They obviously get away with the bad behavior and act with impunity. Gene's make you sign a legal document saying they charge a 50% nonrefundable deposit. You must pick your project up in 30 days and at 60 they aren't responsible for it. If they damage your art they aren't responsible for more than $500 in damages. If a framer does good work the customers want to pick their art up and you don't need to force them to sign a shady legal document. Law 101 you can't disclaim liability Gene's. I hope you can avoid the frustration and disrespect I felt at Gene's. It's simply not worth it. read more

The manager (I believe her name is Shanna) has the most horrendous customer service skills. She is extremely rude to customers and on multiple occasions she talked down about her employees directly to customers. The employee who helped us with the project we brought in was extremely helpful, kind, and thorough. I would not return purely because of the managers attitude and how she treats her customers and the employees. I feel badly for the employee as they seem to genuinely enjoy their job. read more

Other than having friendly staff, this place is outrageously overpriced. I had a small project and they wanted $90 for and said it would take up to 3 weeks to get it done. I drove to Mt. Vernon had the project completed for $15 and picked it up the next day. I saved enough to make the round trip more than worth it. If you are thinking about having something framed, it would be worth your time and money to have it priced out at some other frame shops. I guess for the only show in town they have people roped in.. I love Gene's. I went in yesterday with my three boys, the associate working was very sweet, asked how I was and if I needed help right away, spent several minutes with me explaining some different products, talked to my kid's very kindly, and also had the nicest things to say about the owner Gene. The prices are pretty good, and there are always sales. The products are higher quality than you can get at big brand craft stores, but it is close to Oak Harbor folks (no wasting money on gas). Not only can you get framing done here, but there are coloring books, awesome dover kid's books, every kind of artistry product available. I just love the friendly atmosphere here. Plus, the shopping bag they gave me was super cute, and I am using it to make a necklace! read more

Went here cause my old roommate had some old maps framed there and they looked decent. I needed three different flags and certificates framed together. Right off the bat they were extremely helpful and with their artistic insight they brought up using the wood and two colors off matte to match the squadron colors on the certificate!!! The price was the only thing that made me cringe a little bit but I loved the fact that they split the price between when you drop off the product and when you pick up and only if you're pleased with their work. Which I was. Even now I still can't get over how much of an awesome job they've done with everything. Super nice super helpful. Just an all around amazing experience!!! read more
